Ghoulies and ghosties and long leggety beasties.. FP's Halloween Quiz

I won't be in tomorrow night - out for a Halloween meal... I have rather a nice list of 20 songs or so - all linked to Halloween-type themes and so if you're having a spooky evening in or indeed a Halloween party, you could do worse than put this on in the background. It all fits.

I am still fighting the good fight to convince my European colleagues that Halloween is not an American invention (although you could see why they might think that) but a very old feast day of Celtic origin and one which I grew up with.

Hope you have a Happy Halloween!

Go on then - couldn't resist. Shoey's was so great. I've made it into a quiz by blacking out the text. I'll end up with massive egg on my face if the title displays at the top when you play it. But, hey, I'll take the risk.....

Up-date: Forgot to include Javis's finest Halloween hour - so I've added it at the beginning. Move breakable objects out of your reach if you listen to this as you will strike glam rock poses around the living room....

Whatever you're having, I 'll have one. Sorry about the line of crap at the bottom of the post - not sure now to get rid of it without deleting the html bits we need....

I recognise Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Cryptkickers doing "The Monster Mash"

Don't know what the next one but I love it.

I think I can also hear Beck and Bryan Ferry in there. Santana's a definite (still listening...)

I love this and shall have it BLARING out tomorrow when the kids come round for "Süßes oder Saures". (Much to their disgust they have to do a party piece before I hand over any goodies, and I also have a giant water pistol positioned by the door in case of any funny business)
Missdebbyjr will be going round with the neighbourhood kids for the first time this year - we live in a little enclave where we all know each other, so there's no being bothered by/bothering strangers - in the sparkly pink witch's hat her mum knitted her last week (Mum's is green and non-sparkly, just in case anyone is interested).
We didn't DO Halloween when I was a kid. My best friend was Irish, and I can remember hollowing out a turnip with her one year for a lantern, but that's all we ever did. I don't really approve of all this *just copying America* (it's the commerce, people; friends tell me there used to be a German tradition of kids dressing up and knocking on doors in mid-winter, which is largely ignored these days), but it's great for the kids to get dressed up and have a bit of fun

Lost track of the tracks somewhere along the way but I think I heard Chet Baker and Suzanne Vega in there. Not together, clearly...

And that's Ghosts by Japan.

And, the wonderful Sufan Stevens.

Fantastic list, fp - enjoy Allhallows Eve, everyone!

Just not Halloween without the Monster Mash, think that must be one of the earliest music videos lodged in my memory.
The Beck is E-Pro, I think
Psychedelic Furs - Ghost In You
Gnarles Barkley - Boogie Monster
Bowie, Stevie & Screamin' Jay, of course.
Some Cure & Kate Bush but don't know the tunes.
Something from a Greenaway film, but don't know which or the composer (or is that decomposer for Halloween?)

Great stuff, FP.

Kristin Hersh's 'Your Ghost'. Wonderful, fp.

Oh and The 'Furs. The Ghost In You. One of their frothier efforts but, heck, this sounds. Robyn Hitchcock fans take note.

Sorry shoey. You first. spilldonds to Ride's Let Get Lost BTW. No I can't be arsed to go back there and dond it. I keep making typos and it's embarrassing. Where's the 'dustbin' thingy?

Shoegazer said...

Dunno, perhaps Shane took it as an ingredient for his monster.

A vinyl golem. I might not sleep well tonight. Thoughts of my ghost-of-vinyl-past haunting me. "Why did you leave your Rough Trade collection with a junkieeeeeee?.That's on issue that must be addressed in the 'Travelling' theme.

Think I mentioned before that my vinyl custodian allowed the covers to be eaten by mice. He hasn't sold the remains for heroin as far as I'm aware. Hmm, maybe I should check. Who can you trust these days.

Thought Blimpy might come through with a Ride dond, but seems he got sidetracked by Toto again. Who can you trust these days?

Here in Scotland Halloween has a long tradition...there was a Celtic festival called Samhuinn, aroung Nov 1 which was the start of the Celtic new Year. (Funny time to have it, but still.)And kids have been dressing up and going round begging for treats here for centuries. It's called 'guising'.

Morning dear 'Spillers! Hope you all had a lovely evening yesterday! My Halloween was not so successful - I spent it in bed with raging tonsillitis. I'm still not horizontal. But you are awfully clever as I expected and have found the vast majority. And I'm glad you enjoyed the music!! I'll "orange in" the titles so you can see what you were listening to. The last one was from the Cure's new album - 4:13 Dream - which I have discovered on deezer this week. If you like FatBob and his crew, give it a listen. It's a magnificent return to form and I was pleased to see that Dorian gave them four stars in his review. It has put a smile on my face this week.

Seems deezer is carrying out some site maintenance. Either that or the lads had a Halloween party "bien arrosé" last night. I'll have to keep you in suspenders for a little longer, it seems...

FP I'm so trying not to listen to the new Cure stuff..

(the vinyl arrives on the 10th)

but I've gone and bloody well had a listen and it's bobtastic.. just the yeah at the end does it for me.

It felt like an old, long forgotten but dear friend bumping into you on a street corner and giving you a big hug. I nearly had tears in my eyes when I heard that majestic guitar jangle on the first track. "They're back". Think I'll have to listen again today... Oh lordy - they might even tour with this. They might even come to our wee concert hall or indeed even our big new fuck-off Zenith hall. Quick!! Where's my old white shirt?????

Bloody hell, we has exactly that reaction to the first track: shades of Pictures of You, with the chimes. Loving the whole lp, though naturally, we WILL buy it when it comes out proper, like.

Glad you enjoyed it TK. We were in Rhodes last year on hols and one of the nicest aspects of the all-in deal (all drinks and meals and well, everything) was that, when we wandered down for our pre dinner cocktail (and indeed when we wandered back for our coffee and digestif afterwards) the Greek poolside barman was a total Cure fan and when he spotted us (we had chatted about music with him) instantly put the Cure on the very good pool speakers. It just added a great touch to the holiday. The new album's a blinder. Off to whizz round and see if they're touring in my area.
