OK, this is going to be maddening. Rumsfeld-like, I'm just going to set out to deal with known knowns here and then take the money, please Jim, because I've had a lovely day and I want someone else to get a crack at Bully's Special Prize.

1.Aaargh! Stop the voices in my head shouting all these names at me - one of you is right but I don't know which one!
2.
3. Urge Overkill - Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon from Pulp Fiction
4. See 1
5. Something is saying Johnny Greenwood's There Will Be Blood soundtrack but again I'm whistling in the dark
6.
7.
8. Gary Jules and Michael Andrews' version of Mad World as used in Donnie Darko
9.
10. Not sure who perpetrated this as I haven't heard a Crazy Frog yet but might this be from the Jingle All The Way soundtrack?

#4 has got to be DIVA (possibly the last time I was at the pictures; only kidding), an aria from La Wally. Sorry, cannot remember who sings it in the film...

P.S. Just in case anyone's got spare whisky in the house, I'm in dire need (for medicinal purposes, of course - VERY sore throat)

Is No. 6 from the Eastern Promises soundtrack?

Sorry SP, (great movie though)

5 reminds me of something from Ghost Dog, the start anyway, then it kinda goes a bit 80s

7 is snow patrol, and god knows how i know this - having never seen the film or really heard the song before, it was in one of the spiderman films.

Was 9 from a scottish movie?

Late to this one, sorry Shoey.
Trouble is I hardly get to see films, so my contribution is small.

1. Dunno. Either naggingly familiar or a brilliantly written homage, but in either case I love how dirty that guitar is.
2. Feel I should know it - it's in my lock-into-a-groove stylee - but not a clue I'm afraid.
5. won't play past 7secs for some reason.
6. Again, not a scooby, but if it wasn't for the annoying repeated shout, I'd have drifted away on its hypnotic qualities.
9. Is that a Mogwai song that I don't know? Lovely.
10.You are now officially in trouble with me: I've heard my first Christmas music in the second week of October!

9 is Brian Eno, from the bit in Trainspotting where Renton quite literally goes down the pan. The track is called Deep Blue Day (i think)

Thought it was Christmas everyday on the 'Speng? My bad.

@ Shoey - Fuggeddabahtit!

@ Blimpy - then the power of music is demonstrated again. Can't remember the last time I watched Trainspotting, but that scene is what popped into my head when I heard the track.

number 1 is Barry Adamson's awesome cover of Elmore Bernstein's Man With The Golden Arm.

My very first Speng point!

talking of Eno, he's just made a musical app for the iphone, where you touch bubbles on the screen to make lovely ambient music and sounds. is it worth £2.39 however,......

Blimpy said...

It's called Bloom, and here's the details:

Developed by ambient pioneer Brian Eno and musician/software designer Peter Chilvers, Bloom explores uncharted territory in the realm of applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. Part instrument, part composition and part artwork, Bloom's innovative controls allow anyone to create elaborate patterns and unique melodies by simply tapping the screen. A generative music player takes over when Bloom is left idle, creating an infinite selection of compositions and their accompanying visualisations.

"Bloom is an endless music machine, a music box for the 21st century. You can play it, and you can watch it play itself." - Brian Eno

Respect to el derino - Barry Adamson was one of the names being shouted at me by the voices in my head! So glad one of them was talking sense.

And what a version that is, by the way.

On the celluloid theme, the last film I saw was Man On Wire (which is spectacular and has an amazing soundtrack).
Number 2 sounds like Nine Inch Nails. At any rate, when the vocal kicked in, I thought "If that isn't the man who sings the hand that feeds…"
Is Number 5 Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence? The original is Ryuichi Sakamoto but this isn't it.
I'm trying to think of Christmas rave films for number 10, and failing. I don't remember it from Gremlins, and I'll bet it wasn't in Elf. Or It's A Wonderful Life, which is probably the best Christmas movie. Although that's a debate for two months' time.
