Lucky me

It's funny stuff, luck: we speak of something as 'lucky' when it's really no such thing. For instance, I feel really lucky at the moment because I've got the afternoon off: but that's got nothing to do with luck - it's because I worked a 12-hour day on Tuesday, and I chose to take this afternoon as lieu time. Similarly, I think I'm lucky because I've got a new iPod which is four times the capacity of my old (full) one - but again, I go to work, they give me money and I choose how to spend it.

I think I'm moving closer to real luck when I contemplate my two grandsons. That's Ellis up above, aged 5 weeks or so. But then it gets all mixed up again. For instance, it was a matter of luck that they're boys not girls, but is that good luck or bad luck? Neither, in our case; though that might not be so for some families. My daughter and her partner are knocking on a bit to be first parents, so they might be said to have been lucky that Naomi could conceive at all...and so on. See what I'm getting at? It's not as simple as you think at first...

The Lucky One - Alison Krauss (ElDerino's recommendation)
Hard Luck Stories - Richard and Linda Thompson
Lucky Town - Bruce Springsteen
Taoist Tale - Maggie Holland
One More Dollar - Gillian Welch
Lucky Stars - Mary Gauthier

Congtulations TFD! Would imagine the new title of Grandparent takes some time to get used to.

Nope - ducks to water, mate.

OOOH, he's lovely, tfd: I've only ever seen two babies more gorgeous than that in all my born days!

Oh, he's beautiful! Well, as Isaac keeps reminding me, He's handsome. Does he live in Glasgow?

I agree with you about how complicated the concept of luck is

Alas for the proud grandma, steenbeck, he lives in Milton Keynes- 326 miles from here.

Oh-so they're both far away? I grew up far away from all my grandparents--saw them once a year, and it made the visits so special. I looked forward to it all year long.

I've been to Milton Keynes!

Oh thank you, steenbeck - you always know the right thing.

Did you like MK? Lots of people hate it, but I love it - lived there for 13 years before I moved up here.

(I say 'up', you know, because it looks 'up' on the map.)

It's been a while, and we just went up for the afternoon to see some friends. I think it seemed very modern, and the underground station was very clean and above ground, right? Or did we take a train?

treefrogdemon said...

Yes, the station at MK is just mainline - there's no tube. When the city was being planned there was talk of a monorail in a figure eight - they never built it though. Shame.

@ tfd - well, January's just ending but I think we already have the winner of the cutest 'Spill picture of the year award. Gorgeous - utterly gorgeous!

As for Milton Keynes, it's too far from us but it doesn't really have too much to offer in terms of shopping and culture that Watford hasn't got. (Culture? Watford? Well, there's the Palace Theatre and ... and ... hmmm ...) The snow dome's quite good fun - took youngest daughter toboganning there a few years ago. Also MK is a great place to go if you like roundabouts...

ToffeeBoy said...

That should have been, it's not too far from us.

I give up ...

Thanks, TB: my daughter was looking for a name no-one else had when she called him Ellis - little did she know we have two C19 Ellis Roses on our tree!

When my kids were teenagers in MK they were always saying there was nothing to do and they were bored. But all teenagers say that. I speny my own teenage years in Potters Bar. Now THAT's boring. MK is fantastic.

that would be 'spent'. Sigh.

tfd, he's lovely. Having become a mum at 43, I understand what you mean about luck being complicated.Wouldn't want to change him, though.
