Evie Sands

May1366's post on the EWOTW got me thinking about this. If any of this is old news to anyone just think it a chance to listen again. Angel Of The Morning has always been one of those reach for the volume knob & turn it up songs for me. For years I labored under the assumption that Merilee Rush had done the original, but about 10 years ago I stumbled on the story of Evie Sands. Evie had a great voice & was first to some really terrific songs but a combination of bad luck & music industry shenanigans probably kept her from being well known. First up
, from 1965, Is Take Me For A Little While which was out & out stolen from her. Jackie Ross had a hit with it but didn't know her producer stole it. Second is I Can't Let Go which got lost in the shuffle of her legal battle over Take Me. The Hollies had a hit with this the next year. Third is Angel Of The Morning which she released in 1967 only to have her label go under just as it came out. Finally in 1969 she got an album release and some notice & I've included her cover of the Troggs Anyway That You Want Me from that. Can't help thinking that with some luck she might have made it Big.

Hasn't taken you long to master things!

I have liked Evie Sands whenever I've come across her but hadn't paid attention to her story so thanks for this.

Angel Of The Morning was written by Chip Taylor, who wanted to write something similar to The Stones' Ruby Tuesday. He was a professional gambler and was looking to write a hit to make the money to get into some bigger games. He also wrote Wild Thing and is Jon Voight's younger brother.

Evie is completely new to me, but I enjoyed that playlist. Her Angel Of The Morning is a little limp to me, given my preference for Juice's big production version. But I BLOODY LOVE Any Way That You Want Me; that's unearthed a lot of long-forgotten feelings, and I'm now trying to figure out why / where from.

Thanks Fintan.

And there was me thinking that "Anyway You Want Me" was a Spiritualized original - man I love that song!

Have you heard it, Fintan?

I'll post it forthwith!

Evie Sands' music is magic and she is amazing. Ever watch her play the 'geetar'?--whoa! I hope you all have heard her 1999 release WOMEN IN PRISON. A classic for sure!

Blimpy - no I had never heard that version-just shows what a strong song it is. Saw once on the net somewhere that a group called the Liverpool 5 (who were evidently not from The merseyside) may have done this before the Troggs. They were from the Seattle area but were English I think. A little worm in me ear says to me they may have played here in Reno at A Battle of the Bands around 1966 but I've no way to be sure.

Any Way That You Want Me is also by Chip Taylor.

Dsd, could it be that those long-forgotten feelings come from about 4 years ago, Dorian's first social CD?
I loved that song (Anyway That You Want Me) when I first heard it, but I failed to look any further. Thanks for this Fintan.
