If only

While we wait for podbean to work again, I'm wishing that I had a band to accompany me when I walk down the stairs sometimes, adding sections as we go along. This is Beirut's Nantes, a town I've never been to but I'm sure sounds nothing like that.
I love how despite the clip's apparent amateurism, there's a "mise en scène" (what's the word frogprincess?) there. If I'm listening to music in my headphones, I like it when the songs kicks off as I open the door, etc., so this is my kind of thing.

EJD, my super rail band CD "Mansa" arrived today... the RR dialog between you and Goneforeign got me interested.. makes me want to go down to our local Eritrean for dinner- they play similar stuff. An artist friend of mine was in Bamako a couple of years ago and made a lot of sound recordings- it's a fascinating place.
Hmm- Beirut, though, I never could get into him- he seems to pale next to the kind of Roma bands I love- Fanfare Ciocarlia, or Kocani Orchestar. Interesting to hear Tempus' take...

About Rail Band, there's a whole history of sponsored bands in Central & West Africa, always very good musicians. You should go for the compilation Golden Afrique, it's form a German label whose name I've forgotten, but the first volume is all music from West Africa, which is where I got those 2 Rail tracks from. That label also has quite a big selection of music from Eastern and Central Europe.
When I first read about him (whaddayaknow, it's a piece by Dorian http://music.guardian.co.uk/world/story/0,,1955361,00.html ), I was put off by the artificialness of it all, even though I know nothing about Roma or Balkan music (apart from The Wedding of course), but then Tarxien put Postcards From Italy on her RR social CD, and I just liked it. Like a crappy manufactured pop song, I simply liked it and refused to fight it. I haven't listened to any of his albums in full, but I like the song and the clip.

Thanks EJD, I'll check it out. (There's a particularly sweet segment of the Rail Band playing now..soprano sax on Dounia...mmmm...)
With Beirut, I just can't get into him. I'm not saying music has to be "authentic", but I just find when I hear him, I decide I'd rather be listening to those Roma/Balkan bands. There's a lot of music there to be tapped, though.

I do like Beirut, "postcards fro italy" was one of the best songs from 2 years ago. He's still not topped it.
