SO here it is, I hope it's neither too easy or too difficult, there should be something in there for everyone here. The last one is a bonus because I think it's a brilliantly constructed intro.
Holy Smoke, EJaydee, how many are there? # 5 is the B52s? Give me a second and I'll tell you which one, same with the ATCQ song at # 10. lots are familiar. This is going to keep me up at night.

Well done! Just to recap and give more hints, (I think not everybody's playing because some should be really easy): 1. Lucky Star by Madonna 2. Bros by Panda Bear 3. Ice Cream by Raekwon and friends 4. Has been found out on this set, played with number 8 5.Aja by Steely Dan 6.I have this image of a pitbull 7.Rock lobster by B-52s 8. Giant Steps 11. Right Off by Miles Davis 14. Electric Relaxation by ATCQ 16. DsD or AlexaK should know this 18. "chop-chop" 19. something related to this has been posted on the 'Spill very recently (✝) 20. "messy in Manchester" 21. "obscurity and chiliness" 22. opened a film with Omar Epps and Tupac Shakur 23. My Girl by The Temptations 24. "James", released last year, who's up on their Bollywood disco? 25. Here COmes Your Man by The Pixies 26. This band could sue Apple 28. It's A shame by The Spinners 29. Nilpferd doesn't like all of it, but he knows he likes them 30. Take The "A" Train 31. "Rawk!" This should be up Gordon's and DsD's alley 32. not quite Men In Black 33. Robots 34. Think Steenbeck, think, although you won't have to search too far into this album
16 is talk talk? Ejaydee, you can't tell me to think--it paralyzes my brain completely. For instance, I have Only BUilt 4 Cuban Linx, I have it! Could I come up w/ Ice cream? No I could not.
Ooh close on that last one Steenbeck, he IS somewhere else on the set though. Now you were thinking too well about the pitbull. There's a pitbull in the video. 16 is not Talk Talk, it's more recent, with more guitars. You HAVE Only Built 4 Cuban Linx!! Isn't Ice Cream the most recognisable song on that album?!
Madge Lucky Star Steely Dan Peg B-52s Rock Lobster Madness My girl's mad at met Joy Division Disorder Temptations My Girl Detriot Spinners It's a shame Duke Ellington Take the A train
..just back in from work- intrigued by the clue to 29- could we be talking disturbed criminals here? Don't know if I've heard this particular track, though...
Unfortunately ToffeeBoy, it's not Joe Jackson. 10 is My Girl by Madness, and 9 is by another Englishman (JJ is English right?), not as tall but maybe more dapper, in sartorial terms.
I'm not from philly, but the Roots are. I've seen a few clips of the colbert show on the internet (We don't have cable) What did you think of the Roots smashing their guitars? Um, I grew up about an hour northeast of here, nearer NYC, so when I was growing up, that's the city we went to for shows, museums, etc. Now I live much closer to Philly, and it would be the city I'd go to for all that stuff, but we don't get in very often. I want to get to know it better, and I do feel a loyalty to it.
Blood nora, toughie, and all the ones I knew have gone. Am I wrong in thinking there's a single note from the start of Patrice Rushen's Forget-menots, or a sample thereof?
That's the one Carole, the one who dresses nice, but has otherwise very questionable taste in fashion.
I don't really know why they had to smash the guitars like that. I guess they weren't very inspired, as the Jimified rendition of Star Spangled Banner showed. torrents are good for TV shows too, I hear.
Yes Tracy, it is Partrice Rushen's Forget Me Nots, which I forced myself to listen to as much as possible to erase Will Smith's Men in Black version from my memory.
I'm trying to cook pasta and keeping one eye on the discussion.. nice Roots track, have it playing on youtube at the moment.. Sure the no. 3 is Miles, it's just too short but I don't think I have it.. any clues? I'd say 60-64?
Actually that clue's not fair, since Nilpferd is the only one who might get it. I think Mnemonic and maybe Goneforeign would know this, I seem to remember them mentioning this album.
I think I get your clue... we haven't quite got around to replacing that with CAD, no. I have the album but don't listen to it much, so I'll put it on while I'm having dinner...
If my thoughts didn't come in such small increments, there might be less comments. About 17. the name of the rivers don't matter, before people start worrying about Hudsons and Easts. Those rivers are a bit green though.
Finished dinner.. found the track, which refers to another instrument besides the one played on the track. I won't name it though, in case anyone else wants to. Must listen to that album more often.. I've had it for years now but probably only played it twice.
And yes, despite CAD, we still do that. Although not in the same way as an architect like, say, Gaudi.
Dark was the Night Cold Was the Ground...Blind Willie Johnson.
I've got to stop thinking about this and get on with my life.
Nilpferd, Mr. Steenbeck is a furniture maker and he's learning the MAC version of CAD. But there's no help and no tutorials. Do you happen to have any advice on where to look for help learning the program? I would guess that Autocad and Turbocad are close enough that one tutorial would work for both, but I don't know, really.
Woohoo! we're getting there. Sorry Steenbeck, didn't mean to trouble you. As soon as I get home, I'll post a reduced version of everything that hasn't been found so far, and remove Pino d'Angio's Ma Quale Idea at 13, it was silly of me to put it in there. I guess that's why it was at number 13
17 must be a cover of an Al Green original involving flowing water by a group known for badly fitting suits then?
I only know AutoCAD, most CAD programs are similar in concept though. Learning by doing is the best way, for AutoCAD there is a very good online chat room under Autodesk.com/support where you can put questions. The handbooks that come with these programs are usually ok but of limited use. Often software sellers will run demos where you can pick up the basics. Newer versions of CAD software also come with run-throughs, what CAD program is he using?
Trouble in a good way, Ejaydee. This has been a good one. And I would have been fretting over RR instead, but I'm just not in the mood for it today, for some reason. Lack of inspiration, I suppose, and I feel like I'm getting stuck in a personal rut, nominating the same few artists every week, which doesn't nearly represent the scope of what I listen to. Don't know how that happened.
It's called turboCAD MAC, but it says it's autoCAD compatible, and I'm sure if we could find a book or online tutorial that helped with autoCAD it would be simple to apply it.
Steen, I'm sorry to hear that you're in a rut - i suggest a complete break from music for a week, put a lock on the record player, and bury the internet in the garden.
Think how much fun it'll be to catch up on everything after a week or two.
We've all been there Steenbeck, I suggest going back to your musical basics. Burying the internet in the garden might be a little extreme, and your computer might catch some bugs.
Hmm... AutoCAD compatible just means file types are exchangeable- AutoCAD DWG is the industry standard. However turboCAD seems to have similar menus and commands. Tutorials ought to have been delivered with the software- depends how you came by it though ;-). A second hand AutoCAD handbook for say AutoCAD 2002 or 2004 will tell you most of what you need to know to get started. It may be a long way round for a shortcut, though-turboCAD does seem to have a few of its own names for things. What does he want to do with it?
Nilpferd--he's a furniture maker, and generally he does the drawings by hand (which fits, as he mostly makes the furniture by hand, too). But he's started doing built-ins as well, and I suppose the CAD helps plan that out and make it look official. I tend to agree with you that you learn best just by using the program, and I'm sure he'd master it in no time if I let him have a minute on the computer.
Not necessarily, Ejaydee, do you think I should change him? I'm not completely satisfied with him, but if I wait till I'm completely satisfied with anything, well...I'd never do anything, and then I'd be me.
I can't really see his face, but I think he should be more cranky, or sadder maybe. My creative opinion however, is not of great value. Almost everybody in my extended family can draw (3 real illustrators), but I'm one of the few that can't do a proper stick figure.
HAHA--your post cracked 100!! I almost want to do him in a completely different style, like the monsters that guard chinese tombs, I'm not sure what they're actually called. But I need him to match the boy, too. Hmmm. And I know what you mean--my brother and husband are painters, went to art school, can actually draw, etc, and I just like to draw and have no skill. But (I'm sure other parents will back me up here) I've seen so many depressingly badly illustrated children's books, and I know I can do better than that.
sb..with the window behind in the drawing..just more shadow, so its more of a mystery the actual look of the monster. (it depends on the context of the story..but it give the observer the the use of their own imagination) also its a great cheat..not quite happy yourself..dark mystery...I didn't say this ok!!!
I agree with ejd..your first picture bought out the childish brilliant response "I wanna see the monster" in all of us.. so it worked to perfection. And I agree with you, some childrens book are terribly illustrated, not enough respect given to a childs visual sense.
first point ejd I'm still trying your quizz and have listened so many times I've got into it as a whole now! but I'm lost I think. sb remembered a post I was going to do a while back on kids books relating to music, I'll try and sort out this week. my 'Whale of Mass Destruction' (tis a killer) I'm not happy with yet and was pleased when Zane ripped apart the prototype this morning. I will use the bird man..who tells the tales soon.
I just can't get the faint voices in the background..the ms sane is so into her book she's crying next to me, while I've replayed this again and again, glad it's good or else this would be so annoying.(once more with headphones!)
re- the whale he's a good crytic..wasn't working yet!
Oh come on! Have some sympathy! This song is massive. You're gonna give me a heart attack.
About 17:"it is cover by a NY band. Manhattan is surrounded by two rivers" "could they take you to it?" "17 must be a cover of an Al Green original involving flowing water by a group known for badly fitting suits then?"
Massive Attack unfinished sympathy. I'd never seen that video.
You're right about them being good critics, Saneshane, every time I picked up a guitar when Malcolm was little he said, "Stop guitaring, you're giving me a headache." And now Isaac is much less subtle, he just attacks me with a stick.
It's been a frantic week and I've just had my first chance to listen to these. I claim Aretha Franklin covering Elton John's Border Song, also known as Holy Moses.
Right, time to end this mammoth of a quizz, congratulations everybody, you got most of it. Songs that weren't found out are marked with a *

125 comments in total!! Now that'll take some beating (except maybe ejaydee's follow on quiz will do it - if this was just the warm-up; imagine the real deal!!!!!)
Oh no, I think I put everybody of quizzes for a little while. I made some bad choices and misjudged the difficulty of some. It was only supposed to be warm-up for RR on a thursday night.

Holy Smoke, EJaydee, how many are there? # 5 is the B52s? Give me a second and I'll tell you which one, same with the ATCQ song at # 10. lots are familiar. This is going to keep me up at night.
Good start
I think I may have the numbers of the songs wrong. Electric relaxation?
Rock Lobster, obviously. and #4? 5? is killing me.
Electric Relaxation it is.
I'm realising I may have put too many in there, I might do a reduced version tomorrow if this is too much.
First part, first listen:
Lucky Star - Madonna
Bros - Panda Bear
Here Comes Your Man- Pixies
It's a shaa aaaa aaaame the way mess around with my heart - Lethal Bizzle remix?!!
Um, Dawn Penn?
look, i've got the boy off to sleep, so if I play them louder..it's not going to help..
I'm sure I heard night rider theme but how many times has that been sampled..
play again..quieter!!!
INXS!!!!
"Stay Together"
no Dawn Penn, No InXS, no Knight Rider sample, and it's the regular It's A Shame
"Big Chief" - Professor Longhair (or Lily)
"Men In Black - Will Smith (or whomever he stole from)
4-Coltrane? 5 is killing me does it have the refrain "you know i love you better" who sings that?
@steenbeck - is it de la soul?
No, but they sampled it, didn't they!!!
The first 3 are correct Blimpo
So far, you've got:
1 Lucky Star by Madonna
2 Bros by panda Bear
5 Dorian would not approve of
7 Rock Lobster by The B-52s
14 Electric Relaxation by ATCQ
25 Here Comes Your Man
28 It's A Shame
32 you're close Blimpy, do some quick googlage
is there still dre?
So it's Steely Dan--Peg.
Steenbeck 4 is by someone who played with John Coltrane, who appears somewhere else on the set
Peg it is
my girl--the temptations
Duke Ellington a-train?
Did I hear Bob Marley Nina Simone or Kanye West
Mikey Dread?
Duke Ellington's Take The A Train is in there, so is My Girl by the Temptations.
No Mikey Dread, Bob Marley Nina Simone or Kanye West
This week it's songs with a twist, in case anyone couldn't find it, over on RR, that is.
Ejaydee, I think I either know or want to know song #3. Do I know it?
You should have come across it steenbeck, it's not necessarily your favourite style, but you're not too far from it either.
I'm hearing dub before and reggae after electric relaxation, but I'm not getting any farther than that. Very clever, putting this up right before RR time and getting us all hooked over here. Well, getting me hooked, anyway. For me this is without doubt the most maddening yet. (in a good way) What time is it there now, Ejaydee?
I planned to get it up at least a full hour before RR but ended up late. After Electric Relaxation is a fellow countrymen (of mine), he has done dub, but not in this case. Before that, I should have made it a bit longer, it's more disco than dub. It's now only 8.38 here in SP, so I'm only one hour ahead of you right?
Yup, just an hour. It's a really good quiz, Ejaydee, so many tracks are tantalizingly familiar. I'll give it a listen with fresh ears in the morning.
I had an early night.. great photo and quiz, EJ.
not sure about the numbers, but definitely
8 Giant Steps, John Coltrane
11 Right off, Miles Davis
the mute trumpet near the beginning (3?) sounds like Miles too, but I'll need to hear it again.
No. 3 after the owl's hoot sounds like I should know it too, but I have to rush this morning... will try more this evening..
Yes, 8 is Giant Steps by John Coltrane and 11 is Right Off by Miles Davis.
I think the owl may be giving a little hint about its successor … is number 03 the (to-wit-to) Wu-Tang Clan?
I hadn't realised it, but yes that could be a hint. It's technically not the Wu-Tang Clan as a group but 3 prominent members and a sidekick. The song is a sweet food, has been in the A-Z, and it's on a cook's album.
Raekwon - Ice Cream
Yay!
I see what you mean about the last track's intro. I'm not very familiar with The Knife but I may have to investigate further. This track, We Share Our Mothers' Health, has a good, but unsettling, video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=617ANIA5Rqs
Well done!
Just to recap and give more hints, (I think not everybody's playing because some should be really easy):
1. Lucky Star by Madonna
2. Bros by Panda Bear
3. Ice Cream by Raekwon and friends
4. Has been found out on this set, played with number 8
5.Aja by Steely Dan
6.I have this image of a pitbull
7.Rock lobster by B-52s
8. Giant Steps
11. Right Off by Miles Davis
14. Electric Relaxation by ATCQ
16. DsD or AlexaK should know this
18. "chop-chop"
19. something related to this has been posted on the 'Spill very recently (✝)
20. "messy in Manchester"
21. "obscurity and chiliness"
22. opened a film with Omar Epps and Tupac Shakur
23. My Girl by The Temptations
24. "James", released last year, who's up on their Bollywood disco?
25. Here COmes Your Man by The Pixies
26. This band could sue Apple
28. It's A shame by The Spinners
29. Nilpferd doesn't like all of it, but he knows he likes them
30. Take The "A" Train
31. "Rawk!" This should be up Gordon's and DsD's alley
32. not quite Men In Black
33. Robots
34. Think Steenbeck, think, although you won't have to search too far into this album
Sorry, EJD, you're right. I haven't got involved in any of the clip-quizzes as I'm just too busy at the moment.
I promise I'll have a listen tonight.
DsD
16 is talk talk? Ejaydee, you can't tell me to think--it paralyzes my brain completely. For instance, I have Only BUilt 4 Cuban Linx, I have it! Could I come up w/ Ice cream? No I could not.
is # 6 BIg Boi?
Ooh close on that last one Steenbeck, he IS somewhere else on the set though. Now you were thinking too well about the pitbull. There's a pitbull in the video.
16 is not Talk Talk, it's more recent, with more guitars.
You HAVE Only Built 4 Cuban Linx!! Isn't Ice Cream the most recognisable song on that album?!
No problem DsDad.
GHETTO MUSICK!! Brilliant, because it really kicks in after that. Was that the one I was supposed to think about? Can I stop thinking now?
There are a couple more I want clues about, but I've lost track of the numbers.
Yes you can take off that thinking cap, it was Ghettomusick.
10 Shares a title with another song on this set.
6. The pitbull wears sunglasses
OK, I have got
Madge Lucky Star
Steely Dan Peg
B-52s Rock Lobster
Madness My girl's mad at met
Joy Division Disorder
Temptations My Girl
Detriot Spinners It's a shame
Duke Ellington Take the A train
Correct! Madness' My Girl was no. 10 and Joy Division at 20
Can't tell you the number, but I've definitely got 'Mistaken for Strangers' by The National. Tune.
16 WAS Mistaken For Strangers by The National
20's Joy Division, isn't it?
18. is a chop from the big man.
..just back in from work- intrigued by the clue to 29- could we be talking disturbed criminals here? Don't know if I've heard this particular track, though...
What do tress have?
I'm losing track of the numbers, but I think it's 21, 22, and 26 that are driving me crazy.
Juice(know the ledge)--I should have remembered you and Dorian talking about that. I'm terrible at this.
Sorry, that was supposed to be "what do treEs have?"
21 is inspired by an event in the New Testament, a pretty big one.
22. is a sweet drink
26. Not only could they sue Apple, they're also french.
woohoo!
glad you corrected.. I was just have a crisis about tresses..
was that my clue with trees??
uh.. Roots???!!
Yesss!!!
Somewhere around number 9 or 10 is Joe Jackson - Is She Really Going Out With Him.
I only knew that one, Peg and It's A Shame.
Oops - just noticed it's not Joe Jackson - it's Madness - which I see has already been identified.
Ah well...
Unfortunately ToffeeBoy, it's not Joe Jackson. 10 is My Girl by Madness, and 9 is by another Englishman (JJ is English right?), not as tall but maybe more dapper, in sartorial terms.
Don't say Nothin?
The one before Madness is Nazi style groupie Bryan Ferry The In Crowd originally by Dobie Grey, I think.
Ooh, and Monie Love's It's a Shame? And the start of My Girl by the Temps?
Yes Tracy, it is Partrice Rushen's Forget Me Nots, which I forced myself to listen to as much as possible to erase Will Smith's Men in Black version from my memory.
And Blur's Tender.
It was It's A Shame by The Spinners Tracy, no Blur though.
Bum!!!!!!!
17 is cover by a NY band. Manhattan is surrounded by two rivers.
I'm trying to cook pasta and keeping one eye on the discussion.. nice Roots track, have it playing on youtube at the moment..
Sure the no. 3 is Miles, it's just too short but I don't think I have it.. any clues? I'd say 60-64?
You mean 4 Nilpferd? I could give you a clue about the album, but it's a bit outdated, you probably use CAD nowadays.
Well, I want it to be If I Had Possession over Judgement Day, but it's not.Is that close? Anywhere near?
This must be a record number of comments.
My clue to Nilpferd was that architects now tend to use computer assisted design, as opposed to a more manual approach.
It's not Robert Johnson, but the clue is more in "obscurity, and chiliness on the floor"
If my thoughts didn't come in such small increments, there might be less comments. About 17. the name of the rivers don't matter, before people start worrying about Hudsons and Easts. Those rivers are a bit green though.
Now listening endlessly to the quiz, I can't believe i didn't identify rock lobster; it's SO OBVIOUS!
Finished dinner.. found the track, which refers to another instrument besides the one played on the track. I won't name it though, in case anyone else wants to. Must listen to that album more often.. I've had it for years now but

And yes, despite CAD, we still do that. Although not in the same way as an architect like, say, Gaudi.
But Green River are from Seattle, not NY?!

Nilpferd knows what it is, I wonder how one would fit in the door with such a wide suit.

two birds with one stone, then...
steenbeck, maybe you could finish your kids book! I want to know the whole story...
Yes! is the monster on your post the definitive one?
Let's party like it's 99!
100?????
(it depends on the context of the story..but it give the observer the the use of their own imagination)
also its a great cheat..not quite happy yourself..dark mystery...I didn't say this ok!!!
What do you mean "have no skill"? Didn't you draw those pictures?
Yes, more mystery! Unless you're going for the Monster-gets-no-respect/fear, which is also what makes him cranky.
Thanks, Ejaydee and saneshane for the kind words, and I think shadows are a very elegant solution to all my problems.
Ejaydee, I need another clue about #6. I never saw MTV raps. Would this have been something I would have seen there?
I agree with ejd..your first picture bought out the childish brilliant response "I wanna see the monster" in all of us..
so it worked to perfection.
And I agree with you, some childrens book are terribly illustrated, not enough respect given to a childs visual sense.
Saneshane, are you gonna post your illustrations for your children's book? I want to see that whale.
You wouldn't have seen it on Yo MtV Raps. The band is english and it's not quite hip hop. I have to go home so I'll leave this unfinished for now.
Nilpferd provided some pretty compelling clues for 17.
first point
ejd I'm still trying your quizz and have listened so many times I've got into it as a whole now! but I'm lost I think.
sb remembered a post I was going to do a while back on kids books relating to music, I'll try and sort out this week.
my 'Whale of Mass Destruction' (tis a killer) I'm not happy with yet and was pleased when Zane ripped apart the prototype this morning.
I will use the bird man..who tells the tales soon.
Saneshane, I want to see your drawings and I'm sorry about your whale, and I think EJD's #6 is all up to you.
I just can't get the faint voices in the background..the ms sane is so into her book she's crying next to me, while I've replayed this again and again, glad it's good or else this would be so annoying.(once more with headphones!)
re- the whale
he's a good crytic..wasn't working yet!
Oh come on! Have some sympathy! This song is massive. You're gonna give me a heart attack.
About 17:"it is cover by a NY band. Manhattan is surrounded by two rivers"
"could they take you to it?"
"17 must be a cover of an Al Green original involving flowing water by a group known for badly fitting suits then?"
The rock one I've been charged with identifying is Led Zep's Good Times Bad Times.
Can I go to bed now, pleaszzzzzzzzzzz?
Yes and yes, you're all free to get some rest.
I've now put all the ones that are left in anothyer player.
Oh NOW I can spot Talking Heads version of Take Me To The River!
But that's about it, I'm afraid.
G'night all.
DsD
Aha, now I know what I am listening for I can hear Forget me nots, Good times, Bad times, Unfinished sympathy and Take me to the river
Reminds me that I haven't played Massive Attack for far too long. I used to have them on all the time but I kind of became immune after a while.
I think I'll put them on my work PC.......
It's been a frantic week and I've just had my first chance to listen to these. I claim Aretha Franklin covering Elton John's Border Song, also known as Holy Moses.
Shoot, I have Border Song, and Talib Kweli samples it in Holy Moly
Right, time to end this mammoth of a quizz, congratulations everybody, you got most of it.

ejaydee, are you sure about #5?
It sounds like Peg to me
Of course it's Peg, my mistake, soz.
Noooo, Ejaydee, I thought it was fun & rewarding. I think there's been at least one song nobody could guess in every quiz so far. It's hard to judge.
