Farewell, but not goodbye

As a long distance traveller I'm used to non-final goodbyes...

first up, John Coltrane's version of Everytime we say goodbye, as I couldn't find Julie London's in digital form.

a medley- Lucky to be me, and Some other time. Two show tunes by Leonard Bernstein, sung perfectly by Irene Kral, accompanied by Alan Broadbent. The latter captures that feeling of sadness and regret at the end of a day spent not quite catching up enough with an old friend, or lover.

It's about that time- Carlos Santana and Vince Wilburn's remix of Miles Davis' masterpiece.

Over and out- Sex Mob does Bond. John Medeski on organ.

Slow sad love song- The Verlaines. Flying Nun classic.

hot off the press, I just got the new Ninja Tunes compilation "you don't know" today, and it closes with Say goodbye, by Big Jus. Great message, say goodbye to racism..

Second separate player- the other J. Frimpong track I have, nothing to do with goodbyes. "Hwehwe Mu Na Yi Wo Mpena", from a compilation called Ghana Soundz.

Thirdly, a couple of words of farewell from Cannonball Adderley..

Loved the first three - lovely jazz to listen to on a rather miserable rainy day. Thanks for posting those. I'll listen to them again.

Thanks for the feedback FP- it was certainly a miserable day in our corner of Europe.. I spent most of the day dodging the drops, trying to get all the hardware we needed for one of our biannual totally-redesign-the-flat-just-because-you-can efforts...
(bloody architects...)

Loving "It's about that time"...

The "Its about that time" remix is from an EP called Evolution of the groove.. brought out last year as a promo before the release of the "On the corner" boxed set. The "Honky Tonk" remix on the EP is also excellent.

Thanks for the J. Frimpong, I love it. I also like the Verlaines--I remember I liked a song of theirs you posted on another topic, too. They have that grungy 80s playing in the very cool basement of some bar sound, to me. Sorry if I'm way off base.

SB- You're welcome! re the Verlaines, not very wide of the mark actually. Graeme Downes is the singer/songwriter behind The Verlaines, he's a music professor at the University of Otago but his band has always sought a lo-fi, garage sound. There's also a certain doing-it-without-fanfare aspect common to a lot of kiwi bands, suspicious of overly commercial labels or production engineers. This link probably explains his motivation better than I can.

The Verlaines sound certainly connects me intimately with my home town Dunedin, especially my time there as a student, and numerous gigs. I remember getting as close to tinnitus as I ever came at the last Verlaines gig I saw, but it was a great one.
Best album probably Bird Dog, but the recently released compilation "You're too obscure for me" is a good overview of the group. If pressed I can probably post a representative selection of tracks.

Great to hear the Verlaines again. I had the Flying Nun double LP (EP?)years ago. Probably saw them at the Gladstone in Chch but the memory isn't what it was. (Or maybe it never was. I think I had a good memory once but maybe I didn't.) Ahh Death and The Maiden. Sigh. i saw the Clean more often - and then the Great Unwashed. Anyway, thanks. Due to a particularly slack period at work I discovered the RR blog only this week and now the over flow. Better late than never. Gudonya.

OOps, I got the wrong end of the stick there...

earlier on this evening i fell down my steps from my porch and twisted my ankle, and was forced to self medicate with rioja (well, it wasn;t entire necessary, but any excuse....) so um, i guess i'm not making much sense. . .

i really did think Gudoyna sounded like a nice, exotic girls' name.....

Blimpy - were you thinking of Gudonya and her less attractive sister, Godamya? :-) I will join your blog from my home email very soon. Thanks guys.

@Blimpy - it's a well known homeopathic remedy - fall down stairs; then drink something that makes you fall down stairs ;-)
