Oh no, not another feckin' quiz!
Yep. And this time it's the quiz for the rest of us. Absolutely no jazz (sorry, nilpferd), indie (sorry, blimpy), hip hop (sorry eejay, steenbeck) or reggae (sorry, goneforeign). Just pure unadulterated chart toppin' stadium fillers (well, sort of). These are all well famous bands/artistes. All the clips (ten, count 'em) are Intros. There is one at least from each of the last 5 decades, to make it fair to all concerned. Mr DNA can leave the room for a few minutes, please. Right, while he's outtadaway, get crackin' and solve it. As it's so easy, it will depend on speed of response, not a vast knowledge of indygrungetripgarage. So, fingers on the buzzers...

- I'm just getting "I'm in love with her" by the Beatles. Drawn a blank on the rest. A bit upset by the revamped GU blog to tell you the truth. Why on airth have they screwed it up like that? Oh well. There you go...
Oh rats...
We both meant "I feel fine" didn't we, TFD?
We both meant "I feel fine" didn't we, TFD?
Is that Riders on the Storm? The watery one, that is.
I get a Beach Boys song but I forget the title, something about the Summer, or maybe Surfin' Safari, and I think I got Just Like A Woman by Bob Dylan at the end
It's All Summer Long by The Beach Boys
Could the one with the voices at number 8 be from Dark Side Of The Moon?
Don't suppose that's "Private Life" by Grace Jones....? But you can hear why I would think that.....
A roaring start. Well done, team spill.
So that's
2. Beach Boys - All summer long
9. Beatles - I feel fine
10. Dylan - Just like a woman
No Floyd, Jones or Doors, sorree
I've had 5 listens, number one is the most familiar, but other than some misguided recognition I'm drawing a big huge blank!
that said, maybe i hear bits of: Richard Thompson or Fairport Convention or Bruce Springsteen or the Gourds or the Who or the Everly Brothers or Gillian Welch or Mary Gauthier??!??
Oh, and that picture is brilliant!
Can we have a "starter for ten" please?
Blimpy - bah!
Blimpy - I admire your scattergun technique (must remember that for another quiz). Regret to say your pellets are embedded in every bit of the wall except the target.
FP - I cannot turn down an appeal from a dame with a northern accent with overtones of Gaulloise. And the 1st clip should be a cinch for you, what with your interest in soundtracks and first rate pop.
In answer to a maiden's prayers, here's another clue. Only one more from the sixties left. So you youngsters will be gettin' into your stride now...
Blimey, can't do that at all. Got I Feel Fine, 1 and 3 are familiar, but other than that it's just showing up my collection's avoidance of all things mainstream ... sorry everyone.
God it's fun being on the other side of the cursor for a change.
I'm off for some shutteye, so you'll have to fight amongst yourselves, and I'll adjudicate on the wreckage in the morning...
@DsD - Neat cop out, but you'll probably know - if not like, or own - all of these tracks...
Did I hear REM's "Nightswimming" in there (the orchestral tune-up)? And, as a complete stab in the dark, Im going to say the last one is either "Sometimes" by James or "Candy Everybody Wants" by 10,000 Maniacs, though both are probably embarrassingly wrong. Another sounds like it comes from a Kubrick film!
Yes, I see that paying closer attention to previous comments would indeed render my guesses on the last one even more embarrassing than I thought. Bugger.
REM caught in the slips by Catcher - well done. The title of song 7 is also about water. But the one that sounds watery (clip 6) is nothing to do with water (unlike the band's name).
So now you folk aren't clueless...
Oh, hello Mr DNA, I didn't see you there in the doorway. Do come in, we need you...
#1 Une Nuit á Paris, 10cc from The Original Soundtrack (groooooan)!
#7 Tusk, Fleetwood Mac??
Found this quiz at 5 this morning: panic, no sound on the computer. Kids both ferried to school, rushed home (thanking the deities that today's my day off), fiddled, sound on again... still only 2 tracks that I recognise, but at least that's 2 more than in the other quizzes. At last! Thanks, GHE (you do realise I'm going to be Devastated if I'm not right, don't you?)
Apologies to FP and eejaydee, I DO know which accent belongs on à
You can breathe a sigh of well earned relief, 'cos you are right on both counts.
Only 4 to go.
I'm guessing now, 'cause I don't own it, but is #8 The Jam's Down In The Tube Station At Midnight?
And a bizarre I.T. note: debbym's posts haven't been sent as email comments to me, but ghe's response has. WTF?!
Sorry DsD, but there's no jam in this rockcake (great track as it is - did it get in the Trains list on RR?)
Also, sorry for not spotting that debbym hasn't yet had enough coffee, and got her numbering wrong.
So the runners and riders are:
1. 10cc - Une nuit a Paris
2. Beach boys - All summer long
3. ??
4. REM - nightswimming
5. ??
6. ??
7. ??
8. Fleetwood Mac - Tusk
9. Beatles - I feel fine
10. Dylan - Just like a woman
OK, I feel your pain. More clues:
* We've had the Beatles & Dylan - the remaining song from the '60s is by the Stones (I'm really givin' it away now...)
* The band representing the eighties has reformed, and will play a string of dates in the UK this summer
* So by deduction, the remaining 2 tracks were released in the '90s & Noughties, by major major bands (well, they think so, anyway)
Is the watery band name Oasis? Champagne Supernova?
And the reformed band Yazoo? (Tried posting this earlier, but it disappeared)
Yay, No 6 is Oasis - Champagne Supernova, so you've now overtaken eejaydee with the number of correct guesses - how good does that feel...
But no Yazoo I'm afraid.
Blondie, The Tide is High. Thanks a million. Now it'll be stuck in my head all day. Why couldn't you have used the intro from Union City Blue?
Good on you, Daft - that's knocked off No 7. Two left.
Have you tried my patent earworm linctus? All profits go to my record acquisition fund...
Coming to this very late and inevitably the two that I knew (Nightswimming and I Feel Fine) have long gone.
Is it just 3 and 5 that are still missing?
Any more clues you can give us - I thought there might be some Muse there but I can't find anything that fits the bill.
Welcome TB, you're not too late as this has been a slow burner. There's no Muse, 'cos I've stuck to stadium fillers in the misguided hope of making it easy.
Yes, it's just 3 & 5 left, and I've already let slip that one is the Stones. The other is from a band's first and best album, released - by deduction from evidence above - in the noughties.
Dearest, dearest, darlingest GHE (wee bit of sliming going on there),
could you pleeeeeeease post the two remaining answers before Monday lunchtime? Pretty, pretty please? I'm off with my Gorgeous Girlie to "take the waters" for 3 or 4 weeks, depending upon how we get on - and my Pre-Teen will be testing his first non-familial flatshare whlie we're gone; all very exciting! - but I don't knoe HOW they're going to be able to teach me to sleep better if, on top of the RR/'Spill withdrawal symtons I'll be suffering per se, I STILL don't know all the answers to this quiz
... just see (above) the effect it's having on my typing (knoe, symtons, completely missed the preview button...)
I think that number 3 might be Spies by Coldplay...
TB, you are so right.
So, debbym, it seems your wish will be granted, courtesy of the skill & dedication of the 'spill community.
Only one more to go, and you already know the band. Think Sgt Pepper...
Got it! The one remaining track is:
'2000 Light Years From Home' from the Rolling Stones' 1967 album Their Satantic Majesties Request.
Bingo!
Thank you TB, for putting us all out of our misery.
Happy now, debbym?
Thanks for playing.
As an aside, setting this made me realise how many songs have an intro that is just a bit of noodling for DJs to talk over. The intro often seems to bear no relation to the song itself, and hence isn't remembered by us.
Equally, there a few exceptions, where the intro is so brilliant, we remember it well (and hence it's not much use in an intros quiz - songs like 'You really got me', 'Good Vibrations' 'Wild thing' and so on)
Can I come back in now?
