WHO WANTS TO PLAY RADIO DJ?
OK, Here's the deal; the phone rings, it's from the local radio station, they found you through this blog [actually Blimpy sold 'em your phone number but don't tell him I told you] The reason they're calling is because their regular DJ has to leave his shift early and they need someone to fill a 30 - 40 minute slot and all their regulars all have prior commitments. They say that you will have total freedom to play anything you wish, so, if you accept, what would you play?
For us at the Spill, produce a playlist and present it with either Deezer or Podbean so that we can play it as a 30-40 minute clip, ideally a click on the first tune will then play through the entire set.
I just made up a very varied set of my favourites but on reviewing it I decided I'd rather do a straight reggae set, there may be some who think they don't like reggae but I'd urge them to play this selection, I think it's quite different from what I usually hear on radio. If we ever redo this I'll go back to the 'my favorite things' theme.
OK, Here's my set, it runs 38 min 09, that'll give me a couple of minutes to announce 'em. Anybody else want to play?
Redemption Song - Dean Fraser 3:19 Live from '82 Sunsplash, I was there.
Games People Play - Bob Andy 2:57 A much overlooked Jamaican superstar.
18 with a bullet - Derick Harriot 3:42 Classic!
Storybook Children - Gregory Isaacs 3:32 One of Gregory's best.
Om Numah Shivaya - Apache Indian 4:25 Contemporary UK reggae.
Pas De Problemes - Kana 3:38 French reggae
King Tubby Rockers Uptown - Augustus Pablo 2:37 THE classic dub.
Open Mind - The Tamlins 3:30 A great song by a little recorded group.
Graduation in Zion - Kiddus I 2:48 Another way under-recorded artist.
Rivers Of Babylon - The Melodians 4:19 THE classic!
Country Roads - Toots Hibbert 3:22 Toots makes it his own.

I do!! I'll have to give it some thought. And thanks for the Gangbe Brass Band. I liked it a lot.
I do too, but it'll have to wait a few weeks as I need to prepare my social CD first.
Me too, and I promise it won't be all Richard Thompson.
I have my list, but I don't have room on podbean. How does anyone else handle that problem?
I've been thinking of creating another account. In the meantime, I erase the songs that have been on there for a while or that I don't think too many people would miss.
As some of you might know, I had the pleasure of filling an hour of prime-time radio with my favourites last year, the playlist (with a couple of 'bonus tracks') became my RR social cd, will dig out the playlist & post it (maybe in PodBean form) later...
It was a lot of fun btw....
Sounds like we've got a good thing going....
Yeah, I'd love to play too, but I've no time to do anything at the moment: I might not even get any CDs done for Saturday's Social.
I have tried this (vicariously) before, but as not too many 'Spillers listen to Planet Rock's RockBlock, I don't suppose any set of mine marked 'Play Loud' is going to go down too well. Ho-hum!
@ gf - As your common sense has triumphed over your desire to be social this weekend, can we make it up to you by posting you a set of our Social CDs?
If so email me before Saturday and I'll send you some anon.
It might take a while - I still owe steenbeck, IglooBoogaloo and AlexaK a package each - but I'll get there eventually!
D/D: That's an absolutely fantastically generous offer which I will accept in a flash, but I'd like to reciprocate so let me know if there's anything from this side that you'd be interested in getting.
Regardless, I and everyone here look forward to your playlist, so as soon as you get a bit of freetime, do it!
I was slightly dubious about the timing of this because of the book party and it looks like some of our core community will have their hands full, so we could let this simmer and re-activate it in a week or so or if you feel the urge do it now and then do another later. I'll do a jazz playlist later on, I've wanted to so this is a good excuse.
I'm working on it, but Podbean is being infuriatingly slow, and giving me time to have second thoughts on all my suggestions. Hopefully by tomorrow...
I think Muxtape, as recently mentioned on GU, might be ideal.. I'd also like to do a list but have a few building site issues this week.. maybe next week. I think self-discipline is the key with these sorts of playlists, obviously you want to take the JAP approach and dig out 95 old C90s etc. but in my case at least the ears-glazing-over-threshold is rapidly reached. So maybe we could find a spot on the blog where we each store 1 (one!) ca. 45 minute long playlist, updateable of course, with keywords or whatever.
By the way, to anyone going to the book launch, please pass on my warmest greetings from darkest Benztown.
And re the book launch, I'll ditto Nilp from the Wine country.
That's a good idea re. a permanent and updateable playlist, we should consider that, perhaps a slot in with the linkety links.
Goneforeign, I jumped right into making my list when you posted this, and didn't take the time to listen to yours until today. Great songs--a nice 40 mins. I particularly liked Pas De Problemes, which I'd never heard before, and the Melodians. And of course Toots and Autustus Pablo. Thanks for this list, and thanks for the whole DJ idea.
Ms. Steen: You're absolutely most welcome, as they say....
Ejay: A question based on your comments re. deleting from your Podbean list to create space.
When we click on a Podbean player here is it going back to the original list at Podbean to play the cut? So if it were deleted there it wouldn't play here?
I cleared out a lot recently and now discover that some audio at my blog doesn't play and your comment triggered the thought that it's because I deleted the original. Drat!
That's right, if it's not on your list anymore Podbean can't stream back from it.
I forgot to mention I enjoyed your list too, I knew a lot of them, but i enjoyed hearing those versions of Redemption song and 18 with a bullet, Graduation in Zion, and Storybook children for the first time.
Lovely music, gf, and I KNOW you'd like Mark Lamarr's reggae show - he plays just this sort of thing, honest.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/lamarr/biography.shtml
and on the right you'll see the Listen Again button for his reggae show. (At least, today you will.)
I used not to like ML for 3 silly reasons. He has an annoying voice (but, hey...), he used to have a horrible hairdo (but he had it shaved off for charity) and he was horrid to Billie Piper on Never Mind the Buzzcocks (but she kept coming back on it). So now I like him.
Ms: Demon, I'm listening to him right now, just scanned his playlist and it looks like my kind of music, thank you.
I used to really enjoy being a DJ and I frequently did reggae shows, it was like what we're doing here only more so, putting together sequences of music.
Just listening to him speaking, I can deal with that OK, what I hate is those DJ's that affect Jamaican patois and put on a big pretend show.
Hooray! I knew you'd like it.
Just marked my calender to get him each week, the timing's perfect, it's the hour whilst I'm waiting for RR.
gf I am RIDICULOUSLY pleased...
