Marnie shreds from the word go, but goes especially nuts at the 2.34 mark, whereas Anita bides her time before letting rip with a truly satanic backwards solo at the 2 min mark.
But which one is the best??
& who is your fave XX chromosome'd guitar player?

Sister Rosetta Tharpe!!
I prefer the overall sound of the first song but, as guitar playing, I prefer the second one.
Miss Polly Jean is my fave, by a long chalk.
There's still not nearly enough ladies playing guitars ('chicks who shred' tut), although here's one who cleary knows a thing or two..

Check out the perfectly placed minimalist solo at 3.05 AND that cocktail dress - crikey!!
And what about this then?

What a lady, is she not?
What happened to the Sour album of the decade post - was going to look into that, but now it's buggered off.
yeah sorry, my bad Shoey. Long story. I'll replace it pronto.
Bonnie Raitt it was.
Didn't care for the first track, too '67 West Coast Djinn and Yocker bed-in derivative. Why don't they make up their own stuff??
However!!!!!!!!!
I hate shredding. It's so cheap, easy, juvenile and tuneless . . .
However!!!!
Marnie Stern just converted me.
Whenever I hear a hot new band I hear every record they've ever listened to. Ho hum, Beach Boys, Talking Heads, Stones, Pixies, Kinks, etc., etc.
Marnie Stern is the first musician in a long time I can't exactly say who she's been listening to. I love the way she makes me listen closely to what's going on behind the shredding. I strain to hear what the song is about. The video you posted is a a Rocky spoof but she is obviously physically fit to be able to send it up. But she sends herself up. Her humour runs through her music (I've been through the links) like Captain Beefheart she is hilarious. (Am I the only person in the world who knows what Big-Eyed Beans From Venus is really about?)
I called my horrendously rockist sonofsonof to hear the links I picked out, we were united for once, though maybe for different reasons.
On the penultimate day of the decade, Blimpy, you have given me my discovery of the decade. I shall follow her career with great interest. Thanks.
@webcore - glad you like it!! whenever that Marnie Stern song comes on my ipod i have to play it twice, it popped on today, thus inspiring this post. To my shame, I haven;t checked out much more of her stuff.
I will do now, and please let me know how you get on.
In terms of influence, I do hear a tiny bit of Lightning Bolt.
Now downloading her most recent LP (2008 it wasreleased, meaning there should be some more in 2010..)
@sourpus - she is a lady, but whither the shredding?
@sourpus - she is a lady, but whither the shredding?
@sourpus - the minamalist solo was good though.
as a stereotypical guardian reading liberal wishy washer I feel it is my duty to point out that I only entitled this post "chick who shred" to increase traffic to the 'spill.
I'm a chickie and I've been playing the guitar a lot lately, but not in a cocktail dress, and it has caused Malcolm to lie on the floor yelling "I don't want anyone to play the guitar!"
so, big nay vote on that one.
I'm with Chris- PJ Harvey is hothothot but there are 2 others;
Poison Ivy - Crammps
and Miki Berenyi - Lush
Shit forgot about Kim Gordon...
Double shit...Lydia lunch too
