Really liked the Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba, Alimunday. Shiv's also went down well. Japanther, the guitars, percussion and electronics on yours reminded me of Miles Davis' band circa 1972-4, especially He Loved Him Madly and Calypso Frelimo from Get Up With It.

I can't link to Bethnoir's. Liking what I've heard so far.

I'll really enjoy listening to these tomorrow. Can they be as good as the threes...???? Worn out after braving the crowds on the Christmas market.

FP said...

OK so I let Darce's run on. End of party smooch. Eeehm who is it?????

DarceysDad said...

@ FP - sorry, did you mean the artist on my selection, with that question?

FP said...

Giggle. You owe me a keyboard Darce. If you've been paying attention you'll know I've been compiling party songs and it struck me that that song would be a good 'end of party' song.

Nilpferd - glad you like it. It's the only album we've bought this year (due to financial constraints, not lack of choice) - but it's a good one! I couldn't find anything I didn't like in the 3s list, so looking forward to the 2s.

@ FP - Oh, I see ... "No Choice In The Matter". I get it now. Sorry for being slow there, Madame.

I will get round to listening to these, everyone, but I haven't even finished the #3s yet!!!

Mnemonic: Fuck me that's loud! I'm being hypnotised/beaten into submission by guitars. Next time I'll wear earplugs!

I'm greatly enjoying these on a day of scrubbing. GHE's pick hit the spot just now.

Have to go with K'naan as pick of the litter and Soul Of John Black and PJ Harvey & John Parish as best surprises for me in this round.
I'm sure others will deepen through more listens, but as a group I enjoyed the #3's more. I think that's a psychological thing though; on reflection my own #1 and #3 picks were stronger than my #2.

number twos!! at last i get to listen!!!

@shiv - love it - i think i poste dht eviddy to this and then promptly forgot about it. don;t i feel silly now!!

Blimpy said...

tee hee, the duality of gareth's leading into mnemonic's is awesome!!

not surprisingly i loved Mnemonic's tune and i'm trying to work out who chose "Sleepless" by The Decembrists...I picked up a (secondhand already!) copy of that Dark Was The NIght compilation album yesterday and it's amazing! (@Blimpy - I also got an old King Creosote LP for 2 quid!)

Blimpy said...

@japanther - which one??!

Blimpy said...

@shane - blam!! that song on headphones just about blew my head off!!

Blimpy said...

GHE - your forest fire has blown me away!! amazing stuff!!

Luke-sensei said...

@Blimpy - "KC Rules OK" it's from 2005 and sounded pretty good on first listen.

right.....i'm off to work (and to listen to the rest of these) looking at the wrong end of a 14-hour work day....sigh........

Blimpy said...

@japanther - "KC rules OK" was my bestest LP of the 00s.

Blimpy said...

@skp - great choice, very english sounding and 100% obscure. top marks!!

A quick thanks to everybody who donded my #2 [It's not a competition. - Ed.]. Blimpy, I'm a Polly Harvey fan... but I didn't even know the record was imminent until you posted the video here, so you're fully implicated in its presence on the list.

If last year is any guide it'll be early January before I've listened to all the 1 - 2 - 3s, but I have sampled some items already... Taken By Trees are on my "must investigate" list; by sheer coincidence I picked up a 2nd hand copy of Los Campesinos' CD/DVD in a box in a cheapo shop on Saturday; and I've heard my first ever cover of a Judee Sill song. And it's a beaut.

THanks for organizing, shoegazer, I haven't had a chance to listen to either list carefully yet, but I had a sneak listen to the beginnings of the 3s. I only knew 1! What a fuddyduddy I am! It's almost overwhelming. Okay, it is overwhelming.

For some reason, everytime I hear the beginning of the Raveonettes song, I think it's A FLock Of Seagulls' Photograph Of You.

Luke-sensei said...

THREE different tunes from The Decembrists! everyone's second favourite band it seems! They are all great songs though..

have also dug K'naan, Raveonettes (liked it when it was posted and like it even more now!) and Neko Case...just about half the list to go now...

(I really should do some work....)

@Japanther
"Sleepless" was my pick. "Dark Was the Night" is amazing, isn't it? Far and away my record of the year - it's a perfect snapshot of the sort of music I listen to most at the moment (look out for my #1).

Naturally loving this list so far.

Luke-sensei said...

nice one barbryn! - indeed, if I had found out about it sooner it might well have been mine too!

@SKP - and another dond from me; that was great. any info. about who the hell it is??

@blimpy - that's amazing that "KC Rules OK" was your #1 pick for album of the 00's! i must have subconsciously filed the name away in my head to make me buy it. i'm very much looking forward to spending more time with it but feel a bit guilty that I got it so cheaply, surely Blimpy's album of the decade has got to be worth more than 2 quid!! maybe if i go back to the shop and explain the situation, they'll accept a bit more money for it!!

B-Mac & Special Sauce said...

@japanther - i hope i haven't heaped too much hype - making it way too much to live up to.

but you should totally take it back, waving it around, shouting "this is an obscure classic!! i demand to pay more!!"

Christ! Mnemonic's song has just come on. I'm surprised my laptop is still working.

Phew, finally managed to catch up with these - hopefully just in time to enjoy the number 1s at the same time as everyone else when they get posted... Thanks for sorting this out Shoey - it's quite a mammoth project, but so worthwhile and great to hear what everyone else has been enjoying in one place.

Mnemonic's number 2 (teehee) might just be my standout track so far, but pretty much everything has grabbed my attention. I'm ashamed to say that the new ...Trail of Dead album had passed me by too. I'll certainly be checking that out.

@Japanther @Blimpy - I first heard the Voluntary Butler Scheme recording a session on the Marc Riley show on 6music. I liked what I heard but I'm not overly impressed with the rest of the EP that track comes from. If you want to judge for yourself the other 3 tracks are here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/606618/Voluntary%20Butler%20Scheme%20Trading%20-%20Eiffel%20Tower%20And%20BT%20Tower.mp3, here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/606618/Voluntary%20Butler%20Scheme%20-%20Hot%20Air%20Balloon%20Heart.mp3 and here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/606618/Voluntary%20Butler%20Scheme%20-%20Laundry.mp3.
