Happy 1000 everyone!!!

Blimpy's Top Five Bits From The 'Spill Archives:

9 months, 1000 posts, 7853 comments, 4000 individual readers per month, here's some of the things i liked:

1. Nilpferd's history of dondling, just fab! I still like to read it from time to time. There's a link on the sidebar, if you've never read it. Someone call the dictionary folks!!

2. From the post. "Well, this is a bit of alright....."

Nice place you've got here, Blimpy. Love what you've done with the colours etc. I dont have much to add now other than this, i'm drunk and i'm listening to Tindersticks.

I apologise for the quality of this postage in advance

3. From the post "Never Gonna Happen"

ha \you don't even no how 2 do a torrents -u r stupid loosers!

6. actually, i didn't really have time to go through all the 1000 posts to find my fave bits, so this post doesn't really do justice to things. maybe you guys can weigh in with your best bits - like the time the blog turned green, or maybe the duck obsession from April, or the ongoing monster development, or the run-in with websherrif, or the fab quizzles, or maybe the fact that everyone here is funny and interesting and just plain lovely.

Friends, thank you for making The 'Spill what it is, it means a lot to me.

Here's to the next 1000 posts!!! Cheers!  hic....

Thank YOU, Blimpy! And this is one of my fav posts --it's making me all weepy and affectionate towards the 'Spill, and I haven't been drinking. (yet)

Steen's sentiments are donded. As Sam Goldwyn said "Blimpy, without you, possible none of this would have been". Thanks a million, blogmeister.

Butbutbut ... aren't we only at 999? And shouldn't this thread therefore have something BY 999 in it?? This, maybe:

Anyway, I'm very tired (and about three pints emotional) and I've been suffering from cramp in my bad leg all day, so I'm off to bed.

Thanks to all of you lot, I'm all warm and snuggly before I get within twenty feet of the duvet!!

God bless, and here's to thousands more!

Blimpy - I had no idea what I was letting myself in for - or indeed getting myself into - when I did my first 'Spill post (on the laptop from my dad's house way back in February). I had no idea who all you guys were - all I knew was that I had stumbled on a little corner of the internet that seemed to be full of kindred spirits and I felt instantly at home.

I mentioned before how important it was to me have the 'Spill to retreat to when I was stressed almost to breaking point earlier this year and I just want to repeat my thanks to all my fellow spillers.

You all rock (or blues, folk, hip-hop etc.) and you know it...

Blimpy cheers for all the hard work putting up with the luddites among us... that goes to everyone who puts posts up to help... (my wall has a oh so technical 'cut and pasted' on to paper info section!)

Cheers hic! spill... to you all.

@tfb - you rock too, the spill wouldn't be the same without you.

Donds for what Toffee said.

Only been here for about a third of the 1,000 but thanks to all for making me feel welcome. There is something very special about this place & all the folks who hang out here.

Well, if Shoey's a late arrival, I'm like the milkman joining in the conga down the street as the guests all spill out.
But to mix and extend my metaphors, discovering RR was like being admitted to the VIP area of the GU club and having Jay-Z and Beyonce beckon me over to join their dinner party with Daniel Auteil and Emmanuelle Beart. But the 'Spill - why, that's like Jay's been called away on urgent business and Daniel's taken over as sommelier for the rest of the meal.

Anonymous said...

Congratulations everyone. I've just opened a bottle of something bubbly to celebrate (credit crunch being what it is, it's Cordoniu Reserva rather than Champagne) and fed Zissou with leftover barbecued chicken.

I'm another one who found RR at the exact time in my life when I needed it. Most of my music friends had gone back to NZ and Australia or got married and had babies; I'd left work and lifelong nightowl characteristics had resurfaced because I didn't have to get up in the morning any more. I'd been going on my own to gigs; I sometimes think I'm the only freedom-pass holder coming home on the night bus from the Luminaire, Cafe Oto, etc. But you gave me a whole new circle of music friends to argue with, recommend to, make compilations for, and meet up at gigs with. Love you all madly!

(Does this count as my drunken post??)

steenbeck said...

I'm very sleepy, but wanted to say, thank you Nilpferd, your comment is muchisimo valued.

Luke-sensei said...

as another late arrival, i just wanted to say a big thanks to Blimpy for keeping this all together. Thanks Blimpy!

It's nice to know that there are people in the world who are willing to put a lot of time and effort into something, not for monetary gain or to impress others, but just to share a passion, connect with others and be a genuinely nice bloke.

My story is similar to others above; the other side of the world from my friends and family, spending Friday nights watching vacuuous Japanese variety programmes, missing the simple things like salad cream, Neighbours (I was a big - unironic - fan), and shooting the shit with mates in the pub about music... RR gave me not only a connection to the motherland that had been missing since John Peel passed away and I stopped listening to English radio, but also a community of really really nice people who are just as passionate (and far more knowledgeable) about music as myself. long may it (and especially the 'Spill) continue!

BTW, @ mnemonic
In a strange twist of fate, just as my recommendation of Foot Village came to you, i've just found out that your recommendation of Fuck Buttons are playing Tokyo on October 10th (with Envy in support as an extra bonus). gotta wait 'til payday to but a ticket, hope they haven't sold out.

I like the 'Spill more than RR these days, lots more fun, a lot of nice off piste stuff and a lot of nice people.

ToffeeBoy said...

@ May 1366 - "Jay-Z and Beyonce" - that's Blimpy and Steenbeck to you! "Daniel Auteil and Emmanuelle Beart"? - just think Nilpferd and fragproncess...

Anonymous said...

Blimpy, thank you (and everyone) for the Spill and the music.

One day I will buy a machine that enables me to download my collection onto the computer so I can share it with you too.

Now, all I need is some money, six months paid leave, a gardener, an allotment digger, a housekeeper, and a Mary Poppins type baby-sitter ...

saneshane said...

I never ever thought I would think this... but donds to Mary Poppins...

May1366 said...

@ TB - I already thought dinner with Knowles and Beart represented too much fantasy for one heart to hold but now you've gone and added steenbeck and frogprincess to the mix...I need to give Red Adair a call! Not that I'm casting you as Red anything today of all days.

Out of control analogies apart - Blimpy, I'm like Carole in finding the 'Spill even closer than RR to the type of conversation about music I've always loved to have, but had only really been having with myself for the last 15 years or so since old DJing/clubbing/gig-going mates started drifting every which way. Respect and admiration for building the house and keeping it, um, clumsily analogous again to something good.

snadfrod said...

Oh wow! We made it!! Congratulations everyone and, of course, donds to the blimpy lovin', even though he really doesn't do very much round here...

Inevitably this has come around on just about my busiest weekend ever, haven't even had time to get on to RR yet, but I figure I can make time for this - my rambly, sober message of thanks and appreciation.

You see, for me, this is all very odd and appropriate. The 'Spill (and RR as a whole) came along for me as something of a release being, like others have mentioned, a long way from family, friends, music shops and gigs. It has provided me with a new bunch of obsessives to chat with, a new bunch of influences to soak up and new bunch of people who I genuinely consider to be friends. Also it has given me a whole new bunch of challenges to test myself against (be they frodcasts, downloads, quizzes or random-band-generation engines) and I have learned a whole rake of stuff along the way.

I sometimes wish I hadn't disappeared from RR for a while last year as I would have loved to have been here from the start and yet, aptly, when I was able to return anew, there was this whole new thing that just shouted out to me, saying that it would look after me and save me. I really do owe you guys a lot and that is why this timing is so weird. In two days time, TWO DAYS, I will have moved our life back to the UK after five years in Ireland.

Back to gigs, back to family and back to a grand plan to travel Europe for the next six months. Its all up in the air at present, but in that time I genuinely want to try and meet up with as many of you as I can, wherever you may be, because I honestly believe that I owe each and every one of you a pint of mild at the very least. And that is about as good as it gets from a (born) Yorkshireman, right DsD?

Oh and one last thing - to celebrate my return to the land of opportunity, I'm going to see The Hold Steady at Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall on Thursday night!! As long as I can get a ticket. I'm insanely excited, but Mrs Frod can't come. Anyone around Birmingham way by any chance? I'll buy the drinks...

'Spill on, friends. 'Spill on.

Anonymous said...

@ Snadfrod - erm , YES! I'm stopping in a flippin' Travelodge in Redditch all next week, incl Thursday night. It means driving round Birmingham in my poxy little courtesy Ford Ka (which will make me sweat buckets in stress) but it'd be worth it. You've got my mobile number, ring me on Monday ...

Abahachi said...

Only nine months? What on earth did I do before? I'm getting all emotional again, and it's only eleven o'clock in the morning. Anyway, the official 'Spill 1000 beer - I ended up brewing something in the style of Koelsch, which uses an interesting mix of ale and lager techniques to produce a beer that is malty and refreshing - is now ready, so if anyone happens to be down in the West Country we can broach the cask in celebration.

snadfrod said...

@DsD - deal!!! It won't be monday, more likely tuesday, but I'll be in touch one way or another. Rock and roll.

@abahachi - I might have to make a detour for some of that ale, too... Man I can't wait to leave this ale-less nation and return to somewhere with PROPER MAN'S BEER.

.... said...

Oh Lord - I'm welling up and all I've drunk it a bloody bottle of Yokult. How can that be? Cheers for the Beart comparison. I have often heard this said, actually. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. But she is the same age as me and we are both suitably callipygian. No way I could have spelled THAT after a G n'T. Mnemonic - keep on going to those gigs. I went on my own to see Tellier last night. Frogprince has no truck with synthesisers. I was possibly one of the oldest people in the room. But hell did I have the coolest T-shirt... :-)))) Love you all madly too. That's the Yokult talking.

Carole said...

Well, we just got back from seeing the Soul Destroyers at the Fleece in town and I am a bit drunk and going to bed now.

It was a laugh, not a great band but a fun pub band.

You don't always want depth, sometimes beer and dancing is all you need.

Dear 'Spillers,
I don't get to *play* on here as often as I'd like, but I enjoy myself every time I do - so my thanks to everyone who's ever contributed to the 'Spill and made me smile or sigh or prick up my ears in anticipation (haven't had to wrinkle my nose even once, a very good sign)!

@ Blimpy - thank you for getting the whole thing up and running (and for answering my email straight away!)
@ Frogprincess - thank you for your help with my recent translation problem (nilpferd too!); I'm pretty sure I'd have been shouted at on any other blog for hijacking the thread, so double thanks for that
@ Treefrogdemon - I've loved every single song you've ever posted (and I wish I'd got myself a cool name - and picture to go with it - like yours, too)
@ ejaydee - I was going to be deejayem, but you got in first - so i just copied traceyk instead
@ DsD - I wish you'd come back a-postin' on the Mothership
@ Alimunday - apologies for nominating the same song (My Husband's Got No Courage In Him) with exactly the same link after you last week, my CtrlF must have been malfunctioning... I'll swap you housekeeping for babysitting (although I am word perfect on Mary Poppins, it being missdebbyjr's favourite film)
@ steenbeck - are you really honestly truthfully the mother of two small boys? How do you find the time???
@ the nearest barkeeper - one round for all these lovely people, please!

Cheers,
debbym

DarceysDad said...

@ debbym - Sorry Debby, but those ongoing horrible GU format issues mean there's no imminent prospect of my RR return.

@ Blimpy - fave 'Spill moments? No contest for me, it's the way Gareth's innocent little debut album game snowballed, climaxing with Toffee's genius Big Point Mississippi post.

Anonymous said...

debbym, no apologies necessary, anyone who likes the Silly sisters is OK with me ...

steenbeck said...

DebbyM, yes I do have two small boys, but ever since Blimpy invented the 'Spill they've been eking out a lord-of-the-flies type of subsistence life-style, foraging for earthworms and tomatoes in the garden. Until I caught them and said, darlings, we're vegetarians, don't eat the earthworms, try nibbling some of that clover instead.

Anonymous said...

@ Carole - Oh yes you've nailed the feeling Sammy Hagar gave me too, though I was only 14 when I discovered it via the Loud & Clear live album, and I was always too well-behaved for the 'wild-child' thing to be anything other than idle fantasy.

As a matter of interest, do you (or anyone else for that matter) rate the live version of Young Girl Blues as highly as I do?

DarceysDad said...

Whoops, sorry folks, that comment @ CaroleBristol is on the wrong thread, and as I was too lazy to sign in I can't delete it!

Sorry.
