meanwhile, back in Cyndiland..

Miles Davis covers Time after Time.. this is a live version from the late 80's. As MD pop covers go, I actually prefer his versions of Perfect Way and Human Nature, track 2 here, but "Time after time" does have a relaxed groove and some fine mute playing, without really doing anything outstanding. Not sure why he picked this track, but perhaps he heard something in the melody- at times he makes it sound almost like the flamenco influenced Sketches of Spain.

hey nilp, thanks for posting, some good inflections in there - one has to wonder about how much Miles hated the audience he ended up playing for, towards the end of his life?

That's one of the many things I love about Miles. He had his ear to the ground and great sensitivity to the jazz potential of pop. Covering Scritti's Perfect Way was a stroke of genius. I haven't heard his version of Human Nature (I'm assuming it's the Michael Jackson track) but can very much imagine him playing it. Can you post it? I often hear pop tunes and think 'Kerrist someone should jazz that up'. I knew this version of Time after Time - it's on one of my Miles albums but I didn't realise that it was THAT song until I played it. Fabulous.

Blimpy, post 1980 he cast an increasingly genial mood on-stage, whether out of resignation or just through too many drugs, I'm not sure. Probably he would have preferred more aknowledgement from the black listening public, hence his very late flirt with hip-hop on Doo-wop.
FP, I'll add Human Nature (the Michael Jackson song, indeed) tonight, you might enjoy MD's album "You're under arrest" which has the studio versions of both Human Nature and Time after Time. I only have these tracks live, though. There are quite a few versions available on Youtube or Lastfm, not all are good though.

Cheers FP. Beautiful here- has been all week. We've been sitting out in the courtyard in the evenings with a glass of something pleasant.
