Avoiding a thread-jack - Steenbeck asked for a new topic!

As ejay said the other day; what Steenbeck wants, Steenbeck gets. A random word for a new topic seeing as the mothership seems to be undergoing her annual service. This photo of a certain "Padre Jony" brought the word "Vocation" to mind. So there it is folks. Songs about vocations. Shane's definition (see comments on Magicman's post below) will take some beating!

Collabo playlist available.

Update: Tin has opened a DB folder for the topic. Game on!

It's been a pleasure being part of this and what a wonderful trail it has been - thanks to you Mr. Maki and all other Spillers - yes all of them!

Gremlin - how right you are. It's been fun. The most fun I've had with my clothes on (most of the time, ooh-er) for a long time!

Wonderful job, Maki - the list, the comments, the whole time just being a gracious presence to keep the whole mess together. Thank you!!

Cheers, Maki. A job very well done, too.

I hope some of you caught Ry Cooder doing Vigilante Man on that Guitar Heroes thing. A real treat.

Did Chris and liked it very much but am i alone in being puzzled at the presence of Status Quo with the other luminaries on there? Or maybe i've missed summat...

Morning all, went to bed last night dreaming of Fernando Torres. In a manly way, of course (harrumph). Woke up this morning thinking of Nando. And now MAKI brings a little salty tear to the corner of my eye. What a beautiful, touching piece of prose. Very well done!
Do you know why all of our vital fluids are salty? Because we came out of the sea and we carry some of it with us.

GREMLIN - Despite never having been a Quo fan (okay, Pictures Of Matchstick Men wasn't a bad shot at commercial sub-psychedelia), I think I can answer your question. Far back in the mists of time, I was waiting for a muso friend. I picked up his copy of Guitar magazine and had a browse. It was all technical specifications and glossy cherry-red Gibson porn. Wasn't interested, so I skipped to the letters page. There I was astonished to read a missive from Frothing Humbucker of Herne Hill, foaming about the previous month's featured guitarist, Richie Havens. "How can you choose him as guitarist of the month?" Humbucker wanted to know. "He plays a bloody acoustic! In open tuning!! He makes chords just by moving his thumb up and down the frets!!! He doesn't play lead, he just strums!!!!"
Anyway after he went off to top himself and shout "Now look what you made me do!" with his dying breath, the editor calmly and evenly replied, saying that while some my deride his chops as simplistic, Mr. Havens has created his own style which is instantly recognisable and is as valid as any other.
So, it occurs to me that, whilst I find Quo's playing simplistic, they can probably play a bit better than I give them credit for, and the BBC producer wanted to cover all angles. Quo certainly discovered a gap in the market, kids, once bedenimmed - now besuited, who needed to rock out, play a little air guitar and flap their fringe a bit.

By the way, I really like Richie Havens. I mentioned upthread that he wrote African Herbsman.

Just to echo what others have said: great list, beautiful justifications, Maki. Should the Mothership ever be scuppered by the Grauniad gods (heaven forfend, etc!), it's good to know that we can carry on having fun and sharing music we love on the Spill.

Aha SOWC that is a very good explanation and one which makes sense - good thinking. Happy New Year to you and yours.
