It's beginning to feel like Christmas...

Thanks Shoey (too slack to get you mine, sorry). When do we get the tracklisting?

Makinavaja said...

Great work Shoey! Thanks for organising this.

Thanks Shoey...and great graphics, shane!

nice one shoey...
I'm having a listen while packing all my cds and records.. the missus keeps looking at me.. with those WHY? eyes.

Although her 4" thick Russian Dictionary hasn't been used in a while.. but I don't see that being sacrificed!

Cheers GHE - the maddy dancer get a Christmas fairy makeover.... everybody needs some stripy monster tights in this weather (just got really chilly here - for everyone not in Norfolk)

Makinavaja said...

How's the back Shane? Good luck with the move. Amazing how much stuff you ONLY see when you're moving, eh?

tincanman said...

yipee!!!!!! Thanks Shoey!
Only 7 here i really know (and I was THIS close to submitting the Noisettes too), which is great. Not that my wife needs me to have another reason to disappear into my headphones lol.
I have to say Mnemonic that I never know what genre you are going to pick from, let alone what group!
Off to my hermit sound igloo

Mnemonic said...

Ha Tin, wait 'til you hear number two (in fact, move headphones away from ears if you value your hearing)

saneshane said...

maki -

"Amazing how much stuff you ONLY see when you're moving"
- the walls.. haven't seen them since we moved my music here!

Makinavaja said...

Yeah Shane,

I moved 5 times in four years in the nineties. Have stayed put since 99. Mrs Maki absolutely refuses to contemplate emptying the shelves. I know we're all so modern these days and can put things on hard-drives or what have you but there is no substitute for a wall full of vinyl!

LazyDsD said...

So ... um ... will there be a 'Boxed version?

tincanman said...

you might put a bulkhead up before you take the music out. What if the wall rotted years ago and the music has been holding up the roof?

Oh don't laugh. It's happened before you know!

(No I don't know when or where. stop being such a pain

tincanman said...

thats under discussion with shoey as we speak DsD. I don't want to mess up his plans/surprises

Makinavaja said...

It's quite obvious I keep very good on-line company! There's not so much that I'm familiar with and so far there's nothing I don't like and we're only on threes. Can't wait for twos and ones.

Rum-lubricated DsD said...

That happened to me! When I moved the records I found a hole where the wall used to be. Peering through the hole, I saw a little den with two blokes in it playing chess. The scrawny one rubbed the 4REAL mark on his arm and said (in a very Welsh accent): "Will you close that hole back up? The cold makes my scars itch something terrible!" Then turning to the speccy one, he added: "Now come on, Buddy, it's your move"

tincanman said...

That was you!
You bastard, you mae me lose that game

oooo, my tats are starting to itch again just thinking about it. Bishop to queen 4 - who'd a seen that coming?

DarceysDad said...

I realise this will sound less-than-great to both lambre & gremlin, but I had to come on now to say that each song so far (GarethI's selection just finishing) has made me even happier than I was listening to the one before.

Makinavaja said...

It's accumulative goodwill DsD, well that and the rum!

DarceysDad said...

Threadjack: the intros Ten is up, and it seems my run of A-listers is over.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/dec/17/readers-recommend-song-introductions

But in a fit of BA-style pique, should I apply to the courts to have the list declared illegal and invalid, as it appears The Only Ones may have achieved a second A-listing for Another Girl, Another Planet?!

Only kidding, PaulMac.

DarceysDad said...

Back on the Festive #3s, Shoegazer and Abahachi score big, and I haven't disliked ANYTHING yet: something of a miracle. I don't actually know most of 'em either.

AliMunday said...

Thanks for doing this Shoey, not sure when I'll get through them all, but looking forward to it!

Luke-sensei said...

great stuff everyone! I downloaded, so I don't know which track is from which Spiller but it's fun guessing! and I haven't come across a track I don't like yet.
favourites so far (not in order they are here):
Japandriods (Shoey??)
The Gourds
Zi Zan Liao
Jeffrey Lewis (shane??)

Shoegazer said...

Barbryn - if you still want to play, send me an e-mail. We tacked on a few latecomers last year, no reason to say no to more good tunes.

Plan to dropbox &/or e-mail the tracklist on Monday after the #1's are posted. Can also db the files then - should be some space after this week's RR tunes. Tin has some i-Pod friendly formatting in mind.

Shane - all the best for the move

Was planning to join-in earlier, but was informed yesterday that tonight was ShoeTeen#1's Christmas Concert.

Biggest surprise for me so far was how good Debby's MasterM (AKA The Boy Wonder) tune was. Do I see a 'Spillharmonic recording contract in his future?

Luke-sensei said...

ahh...the Jeffrey Lewis was you SKP!! I had you pegged for the ...Trail Of Dead..

Luke-sensei said...

Donds for Debby M's Sam track....I wouldn't have realised it was unsigned (for now) act at all....just a great tune, simple as!

Luke-sensei said...

seems all my guesses were way off....that's the joy of the Festive Fifty I suppose!
Love the ...Trail Of Dead by the way. There were a big big Japanther favourite when "Madonna" came out and the more mellow direction suits them well too. I had no idea they had an album out this year, i'm pretty sure i've got all the previous albums too...

Ha, good thing my tune is towards the end of the list!

Blimpy "Present" McFlah said...

aaaaaaaaaaargh! damn this endless stream of parties - when will i get to listen to these!!??

FP said...

Totally bowled over and liked every single one. For very different reasons. Really fabulous selection for the number threes. Cripes! What are the twos and ones going to be like? (Lower lip trembling) we will be told which bands they are, won't we?

bishbosh said...

God, my knowledge of current music is woeful! Five in and not recognised a single song yet (but loved all of them). When do we get a track listing? Ah Gremmy, one I know! Phew...

FP said...

Well I recognised Neil Hannon's voice and pretty sure Lilly Allen is in there too....? And that Whitney Houston song gets a miraculous makeover. But zilch on the rest. Loved every one though.

barbryn said...

I only knew the Noisettes and Lily Allen. And I thought I'd avoided mainstream pop this year and been much more alternative. Recognised the voices, but not the songs, of Thom Yorke, Jeffrey Lewis and [I had to Google] Alela Diane. But loved practically everything.

@shoey - I sent my post-deadline contribution this morning, hope you received it.

nilpferd said...

Thanks Shoey and everyone else. Fuel's track fits my mood best at the moment.

Shoegazer said...

Got it Babryn - Will work these in by tomorrow.

tincanman said...

Other favorites so far are:
Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba
VV Brown (where you been hiding her all year? What a clever little pop gem.
withered hand (I see why the rush to get on the last at the end.

Mnemonic said...

Great list of songs. I've liked them all but the one that really blew me away was Gareth's ( and yes, I sneaked a peek for who is is, off to order the CD immediately).

AliMunday said...

glad you like, Tinny ... more to follow!

Blimpy said...

i'm finally getting to listen!!!

Blimpy said...

yet again i am reminded to get the bloomin Taken By Trees LP - why o why does it keep slipping my mind?!

Blimpy said...

done it!

Blimpy said...

toffeeboy, mrs mcF loves your #3 pick

bethnoir said...

Like everyone else, I'm really enjoying the selection. I had trouble finding albums I really liked this year and this selection has given me hope. I hardly recognize any of them, so I'll look forward to the track listing tomorrow! Thanks for organising it Shoey.

ToffeeBoy said...

Finally got around to listening to all these today (while watching England nearly grab defeat from the jaws of ... errr ... drawdom) and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

@ blimpy - tell the missus that the feeling's mutual ...

@ May1366 - great choice - would have been on my list if we'd been allowed more than three - or if I'd ignored the rules some some of you lot did. I don't know. Rebels ...

DarceysDad said...

Anyone still back here on the #3s, is Mnemonic's selection really only three seconds long, or has something gone awry? My PC is playing up so badly I'm close to chucking it out of the window, so it could be that. Anyone?

Makinavaja said...

DsD, don't know about throwing the pc out of the window! But it's playing OK on mine and is 3 mins 21 secs long. It's also very good!

Blimpy said...

nilp - that tune slays! blammmo!!!

Blimpy said...

darce - time to chuck that PC!! smash it to bits and hope Santa's bringing you a mac!!

incidentally Mnemonic's pick is top banananananannanananananananananannanananananananannananas

Blimpy said...

oooooh metric, i think i dl'ed this when you originally posted it!

Blimpy said...

not disimmilr in sound to my no. 2 pick!

nilpferd said...

Cheers Blimpy! Cheating really, as it was recorded in 1974, but it wasn't released until 2008, and in typically hip fashion, it took me a year to dredge it up.

@ Blimpy - I've decided that when the time comes, the next laptop is a MacBook, finances allowing.

Serious question: is anyone else having broadband issues? Mine has been getting worse and worse for around two months now, I feel like I'm being targetted for a trial of the 'squeeze-their-bandwidth-til-its-useless' version of Mandy's Law. Today has been the worst.

Safari has died on me; hotmail takes around 3-4 MINUTES to refresh the inbox; the Yahoo media player won't give me more than around ten seconds of any of the Festive picks, and any attempt to, um, put them in a folder where I can play them myself freezes out at least 90% of attempts. Been like that since 1030hrs.

DsD
You can try powering off your modem and PC and router. Wait a minute (a real minute, not a dum dee dum minute) then power up the modem. Wait until it is done all its flashy lights bits, then power up router. When it's done its flashy lights bit, power up the PC again.
Sometimes this gives you a new IP from your provider. Sometimes that helps. And sometimes it doesn't.

Blimpy said...

you may also have reached the limits of what you're allowed by your ISP, and they're throttling your speeds.

what kinda package do you have?

(yes, yes, i know....but seriously?!?!)

DarceysDad said...

@ tin - Have just tried that in full now. It still hasn't worked, but thanks for the advice. To date, I've simply been doing it with powering down the router (modem is PC-internal) for a dum-de-dum minute, and not the PC as well.

@ Blimpy - only a 2MB connection, but supposedly unlimited traffic. When Virgin inherited the Telewest cable network, I was literally in the midst of the signing-up process with Telewest, who'd promised to make the cable conection work. But then Virgin took over, and decided they didn't have any money to dig up the road for the last 20ft of connection to my house. Point of that tale is that a couple of years on, I know I still can't have cable broadband, but I can't find a supplier of a decent speed, unlimited-download broadband for under £20/m without farting around with phone/TV packages, which I'm just not gonna do. Is anyone on mobile broadband? Any good? I'm still v.suspicious of the costs & reliability of that, but quite frankly I'm getting desperate enough to consider it.

I've been at the Festive #3s all day now, and have still got half a dozen to get, and at least four I need to redo as they've come through severely truncated or corrupted. I'm losing the will to live here!!!

glasshalfempty said...

@DsD - I have a Three dongle for mobile broadband (£10 per month), but the speed's slow; the coverage poor, and there's a 1gb a month cap - so I really don't recommend that for what you do. My landline broadband is BT, for which I pay £14/month for 'unlimited' downloads (subject to 'fair use'). I get 7mbps, which ain't bad - but depends where you live.

DarceysDad said...

@ frogprincess - encore une fois, merci beaucoup!

My FeSp#3 was Kandi, by One eskimO (strange capitalisation artists' own, and deliberate). Apparently the singer has guested with Faithless, which makes sense. The song itself is disingenuously credited as an original, but is actually an updating of, and homage to, an old Candi Staton song.

Both are on youtube. Kandi itself has a wonderfully sweet animated video:

The Candi Staton version is He Called Me Baby:

Enjoy!

Bonne Année!!

Oh cheers Darce - didn't see your comment until now. If you're referring to my pick, he's called Dominique A. and I'm seeing him in concert in February. Lalalalalalalalalal!!!!!! Here's his album called La musique: http://www.deezer.com/en/#music/dominique-a/la-musique-353961
I have been overdosing on your pick number three which blew my socks off; I've asked shoey for the playlist so I can know who it was. FP.
