A Gentle Reminder

Life in the Abahachi household has settled into one of those Mexican standoff situations, whereby if I try to start doing the dishes Mrs Abahachi will be forced to stop watching Antonio Banderas in Take the Lead, when it's at least a week since she last saw it, and come and do the dishes herself, despite the fact that (i) I don't want to watch the film and (ii) if the dishes don't get done now it just means that I end up doing them tomorrow morning. Ho hum. Anyway, this gives me an opportunity to remind you all to send me your nominations for album, film, book etc. of the year so that I can compile this year's Spill Awards, at abahachi-at-hotmail.co.uk. And I believe that storks symbolise a gentle reminder in certain cultures...

1. Album of the Year

2. Older albums that you've discovered or rediscovered this year.

3. Film of the Year

4. Book of the Year

5. Hero of the Year

6. Event of the Year

7. Villain of the Year

8. The Overcooked Award: artist must try harder, whatever the critics think...

Any suggestions for special awards, along the lines of Blimpy's nepotism award or Gremlin's nomination of Roy Keane as Hunk of the Year, gratefully received...

Hi Aba- I need to change one of my nominations, please? Is that okay? A REALLY AMAZING ALBUM has just come along, right at the finish line!

Yes, of course; changes accepted until whenever I get round to sorting all this out in the New Year. It would just be nice to do it all on the basis of more than seven people's preferences...

my discovery of the year (tonight) is the Dirty Projectors LP "Bitte Orca". rather tremendous.

Paul Steel's "Moon Rock" best LP of the year though.

Film : "Let The Right One In" a swedish vampire film for people who don't like a) swedish films or b) vampire films or indeed c) films.
actually people who c) don't like films will hate it.

book of the year : A Confederacy Of Dunces !

nobel peace prize of the year - well someone's gotta get it ! oh -

@ magicman - A Confederacy Of Dunces is essential reading! It should be on every 'Spiller's reading list.

I'm just popping in to say thanks for this Aba. It's hard to envisage finding time to think about my nominations for this, so apologies if I don't come up with anything. My mind always goes blank with these kind of questions, the year won't stay still and let me look at it all at once.

my noms are coming Aba.....i'm a bit removed from popular culture over here so I may not be able to give decent nominations for all, but i'll try.....

"A Confederacy of Dunces" happens to be the last book I've read. So donds to Magicman and ToffeeBoy (for making me look good for once, and of course, for the sheer brilliance of "... Dunces")
However, I think my book of the year will be "The World According to Garp"...

Cheers, Blimpy.

I'll try to get to these before this week's MFF.

@ Magicman and lambretinha - if you like 'Dunces' and 'Garp' you would definitely enjoy Fisher's Hornpipe by Todd McEwen. One of the funniest (and strangest) books I've ever read. Seek it out ...
