Midnight

Following Shoey's example, I'm trying to keep it down to ten, and here they are...
Blind Willie McTell - Wee Midnight Hours
Uncle Tupelo - No Depression
Tom Waits - Midnight Lullaby
Karen Dalton - Blues on the Ceiling
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Burning the Midnight Lamp
Cat Power - Werewolf
The Clash - Midnight Log
Gnarls Barkley - The Boogie Monster
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight
The Coup - Heven Tonite

That is the cutest picture...

@ steenbeck - is that an Isaac creation? It's fantastic!

Thank you! It's Malcolm. I just love it. I'm going to put it on a t shirt. He said that owls are the second best thing he draws, which seemed so sweetly Napoleon dynamite-y.

I've always had a thing about owls - I did a project on them at primary school and I've had a soft spot for them ever since.

It's a beautifully composed picture - it's got a sort of naive balance to it that only a child can produce. If you're making a t-shirt out of it, put me down for one!

If the t-shirt gets done please put me down for one for Mrs Maki. She collects pottery owls (has over a hundred!) and just about anything else owl-related.

Great pic. Werewolf is one of CP's best ever, so that's a Spilldond. Will give Uncle Tupelo another listen.

Found the 10 limit quite easy this week. Not sure what will happen when a mega-theme crops up. Wasn't really suggesting any "rules" for anyone else to follow. Do have concerns that the dropbox thing was detracting a bit from the spirit of the 'Spill (music listening vs. hoarding/collecting). That's why I don't box any tunes -
& always prefer to know who my DJ is. Playlists R better. Unless they get too long & nobody has spare time to listen through. Also like the synergy of 10 with RR where the standard should be "would you buy this album?" instead of "would you read this article?"

Sorry, am banging on again (it is happy hour).

1stly - Shoey, The idea of keeping it down to 10 has been in my mind for a while. NObody has time (or wants to) listen to more than that. I know I've been posting lists twice that long, but it's just me being indecisive. I like the idea of dropping everything, though, because my memory of the early days of the 'Spill is that it was a way to share songs we'd recommended that weren't commonly known or easily found. I think everything should be that easily accessible. It's all about sharing!

2ndly - Owl shirts for all my friends!! I was just going to make them as iron-on transfers, so if you send me your size and address I can send you a t-shirt. But it might be easiest if you send me your address and I send you an iron-on transfer. It's very easy, and you can put it on whatever type of (light-colored, 100% cotton) shirt that you like. You just have to iron it for 1 minute. I would very much love to send them, so please let me know how you'd like it.

Maki - I hope your wife is feeling better. It seems like it's been a rough winter for you and yours...but spring is coming!!!

They have the arsenal game on at work! Do we have any 'spill hull fans?

What's wrong with the Gooners?

No Hull fans that I know of, but Carole and me (and you, if I remember correctly) are Gooners!
Put me down for an owl transfer too, probably easier and cheaper to send the transfer rather than the whole T-shirt.

my brother had a barn owl (yes, a real one!) it was called Barney and very friendly, it would come in the house in the winter and sit on the bed or perch on a shelf...

Japanther - I'm jealous. Barn owls are beautiful! Did he have it from a chick?

Ejay - I found myself getting quite involved in the game, and worrying that I might give them bad luck by watching, etc etc. But they won.. Phew. So perhaps I am a fan.

Anyone that wants a transfer, e-mail your address, and I'll be delighted to send it. We can have an international owl t-shirt club!

not quite a chick, but from a from a baby at least. It was indeed beautiful, he used to put it on his arm and go for a walk around the estate. he trained it to fly and catch a lure too. although the dead one-day-old chickens that it ate every day and were kept in our freezer were pretty gross!

One snowy winter day, he was in the house when someone opened the back door, he flew out and tried to go back to his shed/aviary, but the door was closed so he panicked and flew upwards instead....that was the last we saw of him despite an intense neighbourhood poster campaign....very sad.

He had a couple of kestrels after that.......and no, I didn't chuck it in the dustbin because he forgot to put my bet on for me....

BTW, really enjoyed the list. Again the Uncle Tupelo struck a chord with me and I liked Cat Power too.

My cousin had a tawny owl in his living room this winter, perching a on a wall sconce. The RSPCA think it came down the chimney to escape a snowstorm.

For transfers, can they be used more than once? I am already a member of a federation known as The Owlers dating from the time we took an owl penata to All Tomorrow's Parties music festival at Camber Sands. It was full of all sorts of mini-sized goodies, little bracelets made of sweeties, two-drag joints, little pills, confetti, sequins, sparklers and indorr fireworks. I found a model owl with a light sensor inside which hoots when you walk past it and gave it to the penata maker and he returned it for my birthday that year, repainted in psychedelic colours. I'll try to use a photo sometime for a post.

Anyway, the point of that ramble is that I'd like five transfers for the original Owlers. If they are expensive, I could reimburse using PayPal.

steenbeck said...

Mnemonic - they can't be used more than once, but I can print more than one on a sheet, so it wouldn't be a problem to send you five. No reimbursement necessary. Just e-mail an address to send them to.

Japanther - waaaah. That moment in Kes was one of the most heartbreaking on film.

I reeeeeeally want a transfer, steen (as long as Malcolm doesn't mind his copyright being infringed!)! I promise to send a pic of me wearing the resulting T-shirt... Will email you my address now!

@ bishbosh - great idea - the payment for this very kind offer from Ms Steen must surely be a picture of the lucky recipient wearing the finished garment on this 'ere blog thingy.

I'm up for that, ToffeeBoy. Don't think any of us are gonna look as cool as the young artist himself though! (See above.)
