Blimpy's Half-Cut Half-Remembered Lyrics Quiz

Just to prove two points here:

a. On any given evening of the week, at least one member of the Spill team is a bit pished...

b. Half remembered lyrics are even better than the real thing sometimes (after all The Dirty Projectors just based their career on remaking half remembered Black Flag songs in an afrobeat stylee, and very good they are too)!

So with no further ado, here's some half remembered lyrics that have been sloshing around in my skull for bloody ages, probably. Good luck identifying anything, quite frankly....cos I'm pretty sure I don't even know what songs these are - this quiz will help me more than anything else....cos God knows they've been round and round my mind endlessly for bloody years...

1. "My, my, my, my, my music gets me so hard..."

2. "My love is dangerous, precision across"

3. "Step inside the party, disrupt the whole scene. Whole scene? A lot like a moleskine"

4. "You gotta get in my. Hot. Tub. Tick tock, tick tock"

5. "Pasta manyana, I am waiting, until tomorrow"

6. "I whistled for a cab and then it came near, the plate said fresh and it had mice in a air"

7. "It was a night like this forty million years ago, I picked up a monkey skull and woah ha ha ha ha, ha ho"

8. "Na na nana na, it's the motherfuckin Snoooop daaawwwwwwg, niggaz!"

... and now I've reached out the lyric sheet, it's actually:

" It was a night like this forty million years ago,
I lit a cigarette, picked up a monkey skull to go"

Love the Brueghal, even if I can't spell his name. That painting is genius.

The only time I've heard Moleskine as a lyric is Lupe Fiasco's Gold Watch (See now n later post, below)

I think these are basically all yours, Blimpy, and you should put them together and make a song out of them.

Dice. Not mice.

"dice in a air"?

The concensus seems to be "dice in the mirror". But dice, mice, whatever. As a southerner I live in a hice.

seems like i'm very good at not remembering rap lyrics.

it's nice to know that will smith, mc hammer, and the beastie boys, and was not was are the culprits - having driiven me mad for years with their earworm snippets that make no sense.

was (not was) ' deliberate anachronisms in that song used to really bug me (to be fair, I was 12..) and also the bit about killing dinosaurs at the end - in fact "walk the dinosaur" has been a source of annoyance for me for nigh on two decades.

Still, it'll never top how annoying i find "Once in a lifetime" by Talking Heads.

Grrrrrrrrrr, i'll never get to sleep tonight, i'm all wound up.

Why does Once in a Lifetime bug you? You've piqued my curiosity, who could be bugged by such a great track?

Blimpy said...

It's completely irrational, but these lyrics:

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!

are

a. A big pile of BS
b. Dictating to me, something I'm not keen on

The song has bugged me from a young age, so what can I say. And I never liked the music either.

Hmm, interesting...Funny how you kind of assume everybody loves particular tracks and yet, obviously, not everyone can. I always assumed it's written from the persona of a man who is cracking up, like the nervous wreck in the video for this, who is questioning his own existence and, well, going under.

Blimpy, try this one...

Suspend your sense of fashion--it's a bit dated, but it's a genius story-rap kind of thing, and it makes more sense, in a way, cause it's NOT his beautiful house...

Hmm, not sure if David Byrne is at home in this video, but this makes even less sense, because it's just silly, and I think it pretty much betrays the original in every sense:

I saw the Jay-Z when I was looking for the KC Flightt, back in the RR songs about songs era. You know, I don't think David Byrne ever looks at home, or comfortable on camera, which is sort of endearing. He's like someone that just happens to be very talented and happened to be successful, but never knew what to do with it. Do you like any talking heads, McFLah? (I'm just curious, not being confrontational.)

Blimps you're going to have to explain your Once in a Lifetime thing. Pray, why?

TracyK said...

And I always thought "You may ask yourself" isn't telling you what to do, it's a suggestion, should you be undergoing a similar breakdown. In other words, "I may ask myself". No?
