Drumroll please.... it's quiz time!

I love drums. I can't play them, have little ability to keep time and find that my left hand always REALLY wants to do what my right hand is doing too but, nevertheless, I love drums. I'm an inveterate table-tapper and air-drummer. I often put others in peril as I reach for a distant hi-hat. Old ladies on buses flinch as I kick-snare within an inch of their cardigans. I am, to be honest, a rhythm menace.

So, to that end, I thought I would devise for you all my own little intros quiz based around this foible of mine. Here, then, are 21 chunks of music. 20 intros and one outro. All drums. No, er, hums. I have no idea if it will be easy or hard. Time will tell, I suppose. Bon chance!

0/21 - i'm rubbish at drum identification :-(

Erm, did I spot (in no particular order, certainly not order of play!):

Got My Mind Set On You, Oh Mickey, Scattered Black & Whites?

I'm also fairly sure there was a John Bonham, a U2, and one I know as being from Tone Loc but was probably sampled

ejaydee said...

Did I hear S.O.U.L. by Burning Spear
Sucker MC's by Run DMC
Leyendecker by Battles
Argh I'm sure I know the one right after it!
Something by Miles Davis

Is the very first one Standing In The Way Of Control by The Gossip?

ejaydee said...

There's a song by the Roots in there.

ejaydee said...

I definitely hear Led Zeppelin too in there.

snadfrod said...

Ok. So far:
Dsd: yes to Got my Mind Set on You (that 80's drum sound...), yes to John Bonham, but no to all the rest (except the Tone Loc, which I can't comment on).

EJD: bing to Sucker MCs and Leyendecker, but bong to Burning Spear and Gossip. Miles IS in there, and you definitely should know the one after Battles...

ejaydee said...

Argh I'm sure I know the last one too.
The one by Miles is Spanish Key

ToffeeBoy said...

At least I can claim that my musical knowledge is as good as blimpy's - nul points for ToffeeBoy, I'm afraid.

snadfrod said...

Apology alert - just realised I missed one out, so its only 20 tracks, the last one being an outro...

Spanish Key is correct for Mr Dee.

ejaydee said...

Is the one after Battles by The Roots? I feel like the snare sounds like ?uestlove

ejaydee said...

The one after the one that's driving me crazy is Boogie WIth Stu by Led Zeppelin.

Bugger!

So, I'm off to bed but then somebody posts up a drum quiz.

Well, I'm an Ex Drummer so I know everything about drum intro's don't I?

No, I don't. I only spot two that I know (one of them is George Harrison) and whilst I'm off confirming my thoughts about the other ejaydee beats me to the Led Zep one.

I Don't Believe It!

All I'll say is that you missed off the best ever drum intro which is 'Fireball' by Deep Purple. If only I had the know-how to upload it.

And the best drum outro is in 'Behind A Painted Smile' by The Isley Brothers.

snadfrod said...

Sorry to keep you up, gordon, and sadly EJD did beat you to Boogie with Stu. I know not of Fireball, but will be checking it out. My dad has a load of Deep Purple vinyl stashed away somewhere, so I'll pester him.

ejaydee - yes it is the Roots. Keep working at it...

Carole said...

I got Led Zep's Boogie with Stew, the rest sound like Joy Division outtakes.

I mean don't ask me, I play the guitar FFS!

steenbeck said...

Is the Roots Rolling With Heat?

steenbeck said...

That's not KRS-One covering Queen is it?

ejaydee said...

It is Rolling with heat, which for some reason is missing from my iTunes collection.

TonNL said...

somewhere in the middle:
Serge Gainsbourg - Requiem pour un con

nilpferd said...

about the fourth sounds like a The The intro.
Spanish Key I heard right away.
The last one sounds a bit like Tony Williams.

snadfrod said...

Morning all. So the coconut shy is in full swing over on the mothership and, meanwhile, over here we have a couple of prizes won, and a few dejected punters too...

Steenbeck - a cuddly toy for Rolling with Heat (share it with ejaydee, though, eh?) Also half a giant foam hand for getting Queen. Its not KRS-One though. Oh no, its MUCH cheesier than that.

TonNL - sorry, no Serge Gainsbourg. Play again, only ten pence for five?

Nilpferd - no The The and not Tony Williams, either. The last track is the outro of a very well-known (and long) 60s soul classic. Sorry. These coconuts must be glued on...

So then, thus far, we have got:
10. - George Harrison, Got My Mind Set On You
11. - Run DMC, Sucker MCs
13. - Battles, Leyendecker
14. - The Roots, Rolling with Heat
15. - Zep, Boogie With Stu
17. - Miles, Spanish Key
19. - is Queen, but covered by who?

So the first 10 is proving tricky. Clues will come later on, but all I'll say for now is that anyone who doesn't get the first one loses MASSIVE metaaaaaaaal points.

steenbeck said...

Britney?

Proudfoot said...

I feel like a dunce. Boogie with Stu was the only one I got. I did think Queen, but then not. If it's a cover then that explains it. What I DIDN'T hear (or at least I don't think I did)were the following glamtastic intros: Ballroom Blitz, 48 Crash, Gudbuy T'Jane, Can the Can, Dance with the Devil or anything by the Mighty Glitter Band (though number 4 was close). You missed a trick or two there...

snadfrod said...

Proudfoot, I know I missed a LOT of tricks and am kicking myself for some now as I think of them. So maybe there's another (easier?) quiz in it yet...

Steenbeck: Not Britney, no. Far, faaaaar worse than that. They're British and I (I can't believe I forgot to put this in my full disclosure) went with a friend to see them live in Manchester on my last day as a teenager in a bit of gloriously ironic-but-not-really japery. This act meant that, unintentionally, we both consequently appeared in the video for this version of the song. Only very small but, nevertheless, there. Happy days.

DarceysDad said...

Was it Blue or the ridiculously-monikered 5ive who covered We Will Rock You? And wasn't it given the, er, 'royal' seal of approval by having Brian May join in?

snadfrod said...

Give that man a coconut. It is indeed 5ive performing We Will Rock You. And I'm in the video. Somewhere. Man, you can take detached drama student irony a little TOO far, no?

Having said that, though, I will defend Keep On Movin' to the death as a great pop song.

ejaydee said...

I was gonna say the last one is By The Time I get By Phoenix by Isaac Hayes, but I don't think it is, then I checked Maggot Brain, no good, but then I was on the right track first time around, it's Walk on By!!!

If you take irony too far, it reaches a point when it's not irony anymore.
"It's like when me and my mate started kissing because, har har, we were pretending to be gay, it was hilarious. And then we'd tickle each other" etc, etc.

snadfrod said...

Walk On By it is, well done sir. Candyfloss all round.

And as for irony, you're absolutely right. What started out as a joke quickly became an idea to celebrate our last teenage days (my friend's birthday being the day after mine) by doing something incredibly cheesy and 'young', which quickly became the two of us stading in the MEN Arena surrounded by screaming seven year olds and trying desperately not to look like the most suspicious pair in the whole world. So then we started kissing, right...

DarceysDad said...

Is that Lovebug Starski I can hear in there?!

And the one before Got My Mind ... is beginning to annoy me with its evasive familiarity now - Ian Dury?

TracyK said...

Blood hell, not a single one. Shamed. Having spent a lot of my wilder days hanging round with musicians (and cheeerrrrrrrist, that can be very boring), I tend to find there are broad similarities, as far as personality/instrument goes. All the drummers I've known have been simple yet affable creatures. Lead guitarists egocentric, bassists much more laid back, great dancers and , ahem, using their sense of rhythm, ahem, offstage. Singers...don't get me started...

snadfrod said...

Good afternoon all. Apologies for absence today - I had to WORK of all things... Last night, however, I was out whale (and dolphin, and shark) watching. Sometimes I love where I live.

Anyway, Dsd, no Lovebug Starski, sorry. And the one before George Harrison is by a very famous producer known for peddling excercise...

Some other clues for the first ten:
1. Metaaaal!
2. From an album out last year that I have already alleged to be one of the best of the decade. American.
3. This. Is. Jazz.
4. Proper Yorkshire indie with added dancing.
5. Avant-garde hip hop by very cool Americans.
6. Someone has to get this. Its off one of the 80s greatest albums. With added 'world music' value.
7. I can't be the only minor-league britpop saddo?
8. Mid 70s soul from a very famous family.
9. The aforementioned NY producer.
12. Manc. Punk. Ace.

How's that to be going on with?...

ejaydee said...

Squalor Victoria!

ejaydee said...

by The National that is. Is the jazz one by Mahavishnu Orchestra, or we talking more straightforward jazz here?

steenbeck said...

this is sort of a random guess, but is there any deerhoof?

snadfrod said...

YYYYYeeessss, game shot and the fourth leg, ejaydee. Squalor Victoria is right. The whole of Boxer is basically air-drum heaven for me.

Not Deerhoof or The Mahavishnu Orchestra, though I'm afraid. It is more straightforward, I guess, and by an artist who has been on the a-list recently...

saneshane said...

is Jellybean in there or am I way off the mark

snadfrod said...

No Jellybean, Shane, sorry...
16 is French, though. And 18 is Scouse. Curiouser and curiouser...

DarceysDad said...

GOT IT!

Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills.

Right, now for the others ...

DarceysDad said...

Shack - High Rise Low Life

snadfrod said...

Phew. Finally Ver Maiden have been bagged, nice work Dsd, I knew I could count on you.

It ain't Shack, though. True dat.

DarceysDad said...

Come on, my Manc/Irish friend, put us out of our misery ...

Oh and for an irresistible drum intro, cut & paste this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2mRPaEFikg

BTW, how do you do this intro editing malarkey? I'd love to attempt something myself, but I haven't even figured out how to upload .wma files (or translate them to mp3, in spite of nilpferd's patient help).

snadfrod said...

Oh alright then, since you ask so nicely...

The answers in full are:
1. Run to the Hills by Maiden (point to DsD)
2. Squalor Victoria by The National (point to ejd)
3. Is Trio and Group Dances from The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady by Charles Mingus.
4. Freedom Fighters by Northern monkeys The Music.
5. Mercury Craze by Subtle.
6. Was PAUL SIMON! Off GRACELAND!!!! All Around the World or the Myth of Fingerprints.
7. Falling from the Sky by Shed 7. With apologies for my Britpopism.
8. Bobby Womack: You're Welcome, Stop on By
9. Was LCD Soundsystem doing Beat Connection. James Murphy just deals in good drums.
10. George Harrison, Got My Mind Set on You. (early point for Dsd)
11. Sucker MCs by Run DMC (ejaydee)
12. Moving Away From The Pulsebeat by Buzzcocks.
13. Leyendecker by the awesome Battles (EJD)
14. Rolling with Heat by The Roots (ejs/sb)
15. Led Zep, Boogie With Stu (ejd)
16. Was La Rock 01 by Vitalic.
17. Spanish Key by Miles (EJD)
18. Was The Yo Yo Man by Echo and The Bunnymen.
19. Was, of course, 5ive doing We Will Rock You. (well done DarceysDad...)
20. The outro of Walk on By by Isaac Hayes (ejd once more.)

So then, with 6.5 points I declare Ejaydee the winner, with honourable mentions to DarceysDad on 3 and Steenbeck making it to the half point. Back to drum school (does that exist?) for the rest of you...

As for how to do it, DarceysDad, I don't know about anyone else but I just used Creative Wave Studio (part of my soundcard software) to cut and paste sections of the songs that I wanted into one big, new document. I then recorded short pauses of silence in between and made sure I saved it in mp3 format. Once I'd found the songs I wanted it didn't take very long at all, really.

So there you go, drums then.

ejaydee said...

I'm unstoppable!
But I should have got Beat Connection by LCD Soundsystem. My version of Bobby Womack's You're welcome... starts nothing like yours though.

Proudfoot said...

Snadfrod, easier would be good. I only got 8 album covers on that quiz and 3 guitarists on Carolebristol's. My ego is very fragile at the moment.

steenbeck said...

Half a point!! Woohoo!

Snadfrod--have you heard Deerhoof? I don't know that much about them other than that their drummer is supposed to be very good. From what I've heard I like them musically, but their lyrics are too... nonsensical, maybe?
