Nein au Glock ! (See what I did th...oh please yourselves)

This is my belated response to the shout from CaroleBristol to "Draw, varmint!"

is number 9 Nick Cave? The words are going through my head as a melody for one of his songs, but I don't think it's right....

DarceysDad said...

No it isn't Blimpy. It predates Nick's entire recording career.

Carole said...

Shit, I don't know ANY of them.

I have to admit googling a few and I am none the wiser, even with a few answers I don't know the songs.

I don't think I have ever heard any of them.

i've figured out what song I was thinking of:

And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning

etc

Five is 'I hung my head', I know the Johnny Cash version, but isn't it by Sting or something?

DarceysDad said...

Give the man a coconut. I only have JC's version too, snadfrod.

Damn, that's the only one I knew too. It always makes me feel dirty, liking a song written by bloody Sting.

No.8 is a recurring item on RR; it's old Warren Zevon with "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner".

Don't think I know any of the others, but one will be a DBT song, no?

ToffeeBoy said...

Got one!

Number 7 is from the intro to Shack's Since I Met You.

DarceysDad said...

ToffeeBoy is correct, though my money was on Shane beating him to it. Apols for doubting you, TB.

Shiv is right on both counts.

I thought Roland would be the first gun-toter identified.
And yes, there was bound to be a Drive-By Truckers song in here; it's a VERY rich seam to mine actually. Tempusfugit should know it, I'll double up the points: 1 point merely for guessing FIRST TIME which is the DBT tune, another for identifying the song.

DarceysDad said...

Shane, you posted whilst I was updating:

2. is Drive-By Truckers' Self-Destructive Zones.

3. is from The Hard Way, and
6. is the ex-Mr. Julia Roberts,

BUT...

names and titles required! If you'll share 3. with the class, I'll put you out of your misery with 6. Deal?

Well I've been useless at these lyrics quizzes so I'm gonna earn some cheap easy points by naming Lyle Lovett

saneshane said...

steve earle
Eds sorted the cowboy hat one.

Blimpy said...

9, um, Tom Jones?

DarceysDad said...

It is Steve Earle, from the awesome Billy Austin: what a song.

Lyle Lovett's contribution is LA County.

Is is NOT Tom Jones, I'm afraid Blimpy. I think people will struggle with this one; I'm not even sure Gordon would get it. Kalyr or Carole are probably best-placed to figure it out, unless some of our older jazz fans ever mistakenly bought a rock album because some berk reviewer thought this - like Ian Gillan's Scarabus - was "jazz-rock".

A clue on No1 - the erstwhile NMtB panellist known as Shovel played on it.

re #9 - Man? Deke Leonard?

Anonymous said...

Getting closer (in style & era - don't know about geography) with Man. Never heard of Deke Leonard.

Answers this eve sometime.

ShivSidecar said...

Blimey, it's not Mary Hopkin is it? Budgie? Badfinger? Max Boyce?

(Deke Leonard was the mainstay of Man for years... his 2 vols of autobiography come highly recommended. You don't have to be a Man ffan to enjoy...)

ToffeeBoy said...

I'd almost completely forgotten about Man - I don't remember any of the music but I do remember an album cover which had a cartoon-type map of the UK and they were pushing Wales away from England!

ShivSidecar said...

The Man On The Flaming Pie has told me to enter the word "Sassafras". Why, I wonder?

DarceysDad said...

No idea, Shiv!

DarceysDad said...

All answers and a youtube for one of the obscure ones posted as an update.

Thanks everyone.

Why does Johnny sing 'my brother's rifle went into the SHEEN' not 'stream'? It's always bugged me and I can't find what it means.

DarceysDad said...

@ proudfoot -

Some judicious googling would indicate that Johnny's murdering protagonist somehow rode off as far as the Emerald Isle! Apparently the original lyric was written with the Sheen River in Kenmare, Ireland in mind.
