Super Session

I love this album. I had it on vinyl ages ago but it vanished after a party in 1975, along with a couple of others. I couldn't find it again for ages then I got a scratched up copy in a second hand record shop in Notting Hill Gate but this track Season of the Witch jumped all over the place.

Then I tried again but it seemed to have vanished from the face of the earth but last year I bought it from Amazon on CD.

I think it is a classic piece of late 60s rock/blues jamming. Originally it was going to be Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield, but Bloomfield was a heroin addict and disappeared halfway through recording the album so Al Kooper got Stephen Stills to finish the thing off, resulting in this fantastic cover of Donovan's original song.

Stills also plays on a great cover of It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry

It's a small world - replaced my lost vinyl with a CD last year too. Although I've always regarded Donovan as altogether lightweight, I must say I like his version of '..witch', which I first heard in a sound booth in my local record shop (remember when that was how we heard songs to decide whether to buy the album?)
