Tom Waits

Here's I Don't Want to Grow Up, because I like the video. The song doesn't actually start til about 1 minute in

Here's the original Falling Down, for comparison purposes

The first 3 are from Raindogs, 4&5 are from Swordfishtrombones, which the Guardian's list of must-have albums called his best, 6 is from Small Change, 7,8,&9, (I love these in a row) are the last 3 songs on Frank's Wild Years, 10 is from Real Gone, 11 & 12 are from the soundtrack to Night on Earth, and 13 is from Heartattack and Vine. Sorry there are so many, but he's done so much, it's just the tip of the iceberg.

I only listened to Falling Down for now, and it's strange, at first I think I'm not going to like it, but then I end up getting the song. That happened to me yesterday with Sea Of Love, and today with Falling Down and Waltzing Mathilda.

I've always found that Waits requires a few listens before I like it. I remember encountering new albums of his and being disappointed that I didn't like them at all, but after a few listens loving them. Some of my favorites now. I do have a theory that things that take longer to like end up being liked longer, if that makes sense.

Hey, I'd never heard Tom Waits' version of Sea of Love before. Thanks!

Oh wait, yes I have. Duh. I never listen to Disc 1 of Orphans, I guess. I've only burnt disc 2 to a CD so that's the one I listen to.

i have been inspired to put on my tom waits double LP compilation 'the asylum years' which takes from several records - it has songs like martha, the piano has been drinking, tom traubert's blues. i quite like it befoer he went all growly.

it was rr recently that got martha onto my ipod. gotta love rr!

tom traubert is an old fave off the amazing Basquiat soundtrack.

Tom's another acquired taste, isn't he? LOVE this Falling Down, love I Don't Wanna Grow Up.
Weird this: being in my mid 30s, my first exposure to Tom waits was Paul Young's cover of Soldiers Things. Quite shaming to admit that his version of Love Will Tear Us Apart was the first I heard too. He really did have an ear for a decent tune.

My favourite has been In The Neighbourhood, I also liked Cold Cold Ground, Train Song and the instrumentals, Hoist That Rag is the kind of thing I struggle with.

Those are my favorites, too. I like when his songs are sweet, but with an edge. Once you get used to them they can become quite beautiful. I have to admit that I don't listen to his newer albums that much (including the one that Hoist That Rag) is on. Actually, I don't listen to Waits that much anymore, at all, so it was nice to make this list.

Ejaydee, do you know if the Domino that produced some of the tracks on '93 til Infinity is the Domino of Sweet Potato Pie fame? I know it's all West Coast.
