Avoiding a thread-jack - Steenbeck asked for a new topic!

As ejay said the other day; what Steenbeck wants, Steenbeck gets. A random word for a new topic seeing as the mothership seems to be undergoing her annual service. This photo of a certain "Padre Jony" brought the word "Vocation" to mind. So there it is folks. Songs about vocations. Shane's definition (see comments on Magicman's post below) will take some beating!

Collabo playlist available.

Update: Tin has opened a DB folder for the topic. Game on!

Well, it's Monty Python's Lumberjack Song innit?

That or "She Was Born To Be My Unicorn" by Tyrannosaurus Rex. A difficult vocation but a valid one nonetheless.

It's okay I've found it now.

Good morning people - and especially to a rare prescence: sowc.

Made it to the 27th without major trauma so I'm quite pleased. We may have played football in no man's land at some point...

Anyhow, on seeing what I initially thought was a photo of a young Jerry Garcia, I couldn't resist adding the GeeDees' Playin In The Band to your list, Maki, in which they explain their own sense of vocation. It's an early, short version; plenty of other, much longer, versions on Spotty.

Makinavaja said...

Thanks everyone! Instadonds to GD's playing in the band, Chris. I'll be back with my obligatory Spanish nom a little later...

Webcore - really pleased to see you here!

The Decemberists - I Was Meant For the Stage. Ditto (well, not quite, he's not a milkmaid, but you know what I mean...)
The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues

Ta, Maki!

Chris said...

There's now a longer version of PITB in tin's box, from a blazing hot day in Veneta, Oregon, 1972. (To be played as loud as possible.)

Are we following same rules about Zedded songs etc?

Makinavaja said...

Seeing as this is just a bit of festive fun I think we can relax that rule - what do others think?

I have versions by Furry Lewis, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteen.

I also put CW McCall's Convoy in the list.

Tom Waits Diamonds on My Windshield is also a good song about the joys of driving a truck.

The Kinks: "David Watts"

The Stone Roses: "I Want To Be Adored"

Manfred Mann Chapter III: "Happy Being Me" (...willing to bet that I.Dury heard this before writing "What A Waste")

The Byrds: "All I Really Want To Do"/"Wasn't Born To Follow"/"So You Want To Be A Rock'n'Roll Star?" - what an aspirational bunch. Who knew? [Hygh flyers. - Ed.]

Buffy Ste-Marie: "She Used To Wanna Be A Ballerina"

The Hollies: "Gasoline Alley Bred"

The Stooges: "I Wanna Be Your Dog"

Bah!

If I hadn't been forced by frauimmel to go driving round and round a completely packed Retail Park car park for half the afternoon, I might have seen this earlier and beat tinny to:-

'Ernie (The fastest Milkman In The west)'

Since WE'RE making the rules this week, I declare that one to be in the A-List......only chance it'll ever have!

But I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT Shiv missed this one, knowing his taste in music:-

'Song Of A Baker' - Small Faces

There's wheat in the field
And water in the stream
And salt in the mine
And an aching in me

I can longer stand and wonder
Cos I'm driven by this hunger

So I'll jug some water, bake some flour
Store some salt and wait the hour

When thinking of love
Love is thinking for me
And the baker will come
And the baker I'll be'

HORACE ANDY - Mr. Scientist.

BURNING SPEAR - African Teacher.

All my life I've absolutely hated records with kids on them (cos kids can't sing), with one exception, XTC's Dear God. However, if the kid has written the song, the kid sets themself up for the same level of criticism I would hand out to Bob Dylan, Randy Newman or, ooh, I dunno, Tiny Tim. I heartily recommend the album '58 Really Short Songs With Lyrics By 3 To 5 Year Old Children'. Talk about valid pop music!!
NINNY COW TEA - Diver With A Net.

Hang on, God's a vocation . . .

XTC - Dear God.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART - The Witch Doctor Life.

Good to see I'm not alone in my confessed prejudice against records with kids. In fact, it goes to the point I much prefer Sarah McLachlan's take on "Dear God" to XTC's (so help me God) on that basis alone.
It made me think of the one record with kids I actually like, though:

The Clash - Career Opportunities.

How about this folks. Was wandering around newspaper sites, just looking for something to read, and I found a Daily (Sunday) Mail story about Ivana Trump. So I registered with them (about 3 hours ago) asking why would anyone in the UK be interested in anything about her. My post hasn't been approved yet.

Secondly, on my wanderings I found a Sunday Mirror story about Jordan and the Aussie ex-husband whose name eludes me. I registered and told them that my Nanna used to take the Mirror. It was great, campaigning and dedicated to raising the consciousness of the working class. What happened? It's down to Sun and Star level.
Unfortunately they moderated me before it was posted.
Good old Guardian, eh?

I read in the Telegraph (yesterday when there was no Guardian - and it is a well written paper) that 34,000 wild mustang horses live in captivity on a reservation in the southwestern U.S. Tens and tens of thousand more roam free.
I couldn't help wondering if the ones on the res have higher rates of drug abuse, suicide, crime, etc. Is admitting you have a problem the first canter for a horse alcoholic? I'm guessing denial is the biggest hurdle for a horse, too. So easy to say neigh.

What an ace thread! Well done, lads & lasses, you've given me even more laughs reading this than I got watching me mam trying to beat up Jess on some fighting game on Jess' new Wii.

Particular guffaws were caused by sowc's failed attempt at trolling; gordonimmel's defiant lyric-quoting; multiple snook-cocking foreign-language quotes; and the general air of last-day-of-term anarchic release.

It's true I would love the opportunity to pull on the No.12 shirt for FC RR just once, but if you think I'm going to use this joyful shambles as my trial/try-out, I'm afraid you've got another thing coming!!!

Donds to "All hail The Guardian", but megadonds for you lot, and my toast response is a mighty "All hail The 'Spill".

Morning all, it's foggy out. I live on a hill, and fog, being heavier than air, falls towards the river, where it must be quite thick. As I write, I'm listening to the foghorns, low and mournful. Why do they always sound so sad? Is it the sense of imminent and stately departure, or is it an ancient dread dredged up from the collective unconscious, as we search our pockets for a coin for Charon?
When I was a child the river heaved with traffic, and the funereal foghorn was a much more common sound than it is today. Oh, there are two of them out there now! It's almost like New Year's Eve when we'd go outside at midnight to hear every ship on the river let rip!
During the teenage winter I worked on the Mersey Ferries I learned that each landing stage has four bells, one of which must be rung in foggy weather to guide the ferry towards whichever end of the stage was best for them to approach. Each bell had a different sound, and it was part of the job to be completely familiar with them. They'll be ringing now, atonal metallic clanks designed for aural distinction, unharmonious, yet somehow threnodic.

Well, I was due one, wasn't I? Just keeping it real . . .

mornin' sowc,! as you get up i'm just finishing work before a nice 5 whole days off for New Year..ahh....
that's a beautiful description of the dour foghorn sound. I grew up by the sea, but the edge of the town furthest from the sea...you could still hear the mournful tones clearly across the morning air though...

Footie-packed day , bright + sunny, got party of 10 coming for tea (afternoon meal here)so great way to kick off with a SOWC tale! You tell them so evocatively - it's a pleasure to read them (and even better to hear them -accent 'n all). Post festive greetings to Japanther and hope you had gr8 time.
Got reports to write before the throng descends so will be in and out - off on bike to town centre in bit though...

WEBCORE _ loved the foghorns. I grew up near the Tees estuary and it brought back memories. Don't get to hear many in Madrid.
Also remember seeing the ships queuing up all the way to the horizon to enter TeesPort! Doubt it's that busy these days, more's the pity...

Good evening folks.
Glad a few of you enjoyed my foggy thoughts (Japanther, Gremlin, Maki). Was sipping coffee in bed with laptop where it should be, heating on, windows open; telling it like it is.

Hey up . . .

THE WAILERS - African Herbsman. (who knew that this stunner was written by Richie Havens!?!!??)

BARRINGTON LEVY - Bounty Hunter.

sonofwebcore said...

BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE - Starwalker.
The lyrics mention many important Native American vocations.

It was so tempting to post Donovan's hit version, cos it was so good. But the passion of the writer's version won me over . . .

BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE - Universal Soldier.

Is being a baseball player a vocation?
If so, I'd be allowed to pitch - he he - a song from Todd Snider's excellent 2009 album, Excitement Plan (welcome back to the majors, Todd - major label that is; his career's been up and down between the majors and the minors).
In this song, America's Favorite Pasttime, a pitcher throws a no-hitter while high on LSD.
Yet more talent from Portland, Oregon.

Warren Zevon - Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song). About a kid from Saskatchewan who wanted to be a Hockey star. Eventually, he becomes one, but not exactly the way he planned (see title)

One for Webcore (and any other lovers of the Sport of Kings who also enjoy my Spanish Language noms)...

Carlos Gardel - Leguisamo Solo

A celebration of a man with a vocation- the legendary Irineo Leguisamo a Uruguayan jockey who rode competitively (principally in Argentina) for -get this - 57 years! His first race was in 1916 at the age of thirteen and he rode Fortimbras to victory in his last race at The Maroñas Racetrack in 1974.

There is a popular after dinner liqueur in Argentina named after him. So, now you know, round that neal off with a glass of Legui.

but we can offer more for The Pontypool Front Row..."- big bruisers these geezers , no messing...but footie-wise it's Mr. Robertson , B.A. as he puts it:
"Some of us have talent, some of us just haven't
Some are super sensitive like Mr Spock
Chose my vocation, … application
I'm an overnight sensation, The King of rock
Available for parties, Bar Mitzvahs and charities
Do another session, I'll be carried off
I have my creativity, thank God, my sensitivity
You know I really love my art
(We think you are a boring …)
Knocked it off, you know I knocked it off
While I was sitting in the corner with my tracksuit off
I was hopin' I'd be playin'
But I never thought I'd be winnin' the game
You knocked it off. Yeah, I knocked it off
While I was standing on the goalline when the ball got crossed
I thought I'd have a go and shoot it
But I never thought I'd put it away..." GET IN B.A.!

sonofwebcore said...

MAKINAVAJA - That is interesting. Going to bed now, but will look into the chap tomorrow.
Seeing you brought it up, had 3 bets today - £5 win Pistolet Dove in 13:25 @ Leicester, (first time over fences but bred to jump them) - won 11-1. Won £55 plus stake = £60 back.
£5 win Money Order in the 13:35 Chepstow (won only cos AP McCoy was in the saddle.) Horse was unwilling but McCoy knew what he had under him and threw it over the line a head in front at 8-1. Won £40 plus stake = £45 back. Next bet in Welsh Grand National, £5 win, no good, finished fifth, but a damn good day. The money is nice, but 5p, £5, £500 stakes gives the same excitement.

sonofwebcore said...

Aye Aye GREMLIN, just made an e-mail offer to wear the number 12 shirt to write the column. Your idea is tremendous, though. What if we all pick our own A-List and write a justifying column!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Come on, let's do it. Anyone who wants to pick their own top ten has to write 500 words justification.

sonofwebcore said...

GREMLIN - before I cuddle me pillow. No one wins all the time, least of all me. I bet only what I can afford to kiss goodbye. When I win I refuse to give it back to the bookie. I dive in the supermarket and spend it on goodies so that I always take my winnings home in a couple of carrier bags.

gremlinfc said...

I'll go for either option but only prob i have is writing substantial amount of words of meaning as struggling to get Y11 reports and UCAS references done before go back and got big game tomorrow ( Tigers and Lions and stuff...)but i'll try...
SOWC- just had vision of you diving in supermarket when you've got winnings in the style of Jurgen Klinsman as all around you punch the air and join you in victory hug...

@Steenbeck - I'm as real an American as you can get. Conceived in Nevada, accidently born in California and apart from a stint in the Navy I've lived in the sliver state all my life & no I don't mind you asking.

@Tincanman Donds for America's Favorite Pastime - Barefoot Todd Snyder. The true story of Dock Ellis.

& 1 more nom now that you've got me thinking Centerfield- John Fogerty.

steenbeck said...

I like the idea of anybody and everybody picking a list of songs from those submitted. Then we'll all understand how hard it is to pick. Perhaps we should set the deadline for submissions to the end of the day tomorrow. (Whatever time your day ends, wherever you are.) And we can post them during the day Wednesday (wherever the day happens to fall, wherever you are.) The list can be as short as you want, but no more than ten. And a justifying ramble shouldn't be necessary, this time of year, because we don't want to discourage anybody from participating.

How does everybody feel about that?

Thanks, Fintan. Now all I'll be needing is your hat size. Just kidding! Just so you have some company, I was conceived in London, born in the Sunflower state, lived most of my life and still live in the Garden State. I think you might be the only other actual gen-u-ine American contributor at the moment. ALthough Ejay was born in California as well, I believe. GremlinFc's A-List:
1. Controversial Number One as it's BLIMPY with Prinzhorn Dance School but not his nom cos when I investigated them i got so engrossed in all their youtube selections that i had to stick "Crackerjack Docker" in instead. Ami allowed to do that? Brighton does it again. This doesn't just rock; it punks.
2.Mr.MAKI - "El cantante" this really got me checking out at first Andres Calamara but then i discovered Hector Lavoe who wrote the original and then the fact that he played with the Fania All Stars who played at the lead up to the "rumble in the Jungle"! Crazy! He died poverty-stricken in '93 but was the subject of the 2006 film with Marc Anthony & J-Lo- wonder if they've got it at Blockbuster...
3.Weird new-found stuff for me from NILPFERD but like it very much apart from the fact that i actually preferred this song BEFORE they started singing! It is of course "Coalmining Song". New Zealand? Can it be?
4.SOWC - "Engine Driver" by the Decemberists ; one of my albums of 2009 this and though not my fave track , this is a top choon with easy lyrics though it has to be said about several different vocations!("And I am a writer, writer of fictions
I am the heart that you call home
And I've written pages upon pages
Trying to rid you from my bones
I am a writer, I am all that you have hoped on..."). Luvverly.
5.LAMBRETINHA -"Fisherman's Blues" from t'Wattterlads- a real classy number which automatically takes me right back to when i met mrsgremlinfc and our squatting days...
6. Nod to the boys that made me laugh and still do , again not my fave song from the Pythons but a great nom from SEVERIN. Especially the line "I wish i'd been a girly just like my dear Papa..."
7.Another song which conjures up a youth of long coats Joy Division, Clash, Wire , Gang of Four , Killing joke , with the Fall and Mark E. Smith actually churning out some classics , this being one of them "Container Drivers" nommed by SHOEGAZER -"Net cap. of 58 thousand pounds
They sweat on their way down
Grey ports with customs bastards
Hang around like clowns the
Uh-containers and their drivers". Choice cut.

For what it's worth, I think it'd be great for Maki do be the guest Paul. I know I speak for us all in saying you need not worry about making enemies - we've all struggled to whittle down playlists for the spill or a CD or a festive 3 etc.
If you don't want do, gremlin and webcore could teamup. gremlin's posted that he'd do it but is a little pressed for time and webcore's said he'll do it if needed, plus they get on here and off the blog.

As for other people's faves, yeah by all means. Many of us do dond lists normally anyway.

There's my 2 cents/pence

gremlinfc said...

8. "I am the Upsetter" - mr crazeeeeee himself with a wicked choon guaranteed to get most people movingregardless of time , place or mood. STEEN is the Nominator with a classic, capital C. "Now it will be tough
For you it will be rough
I promise you the right and the left
And there'll be the uppercut
I am the avenger
This is the upsetter." Absolutely love that lyric - compromise and jaw-jaw only go so far...
9. SHIVSIDECAR brings up "I Wanna Be Adored" by Ian 'Monkey Boy' Brown & Co , which is another classic and as soon as you hear the bassline start to creep in at a very late 40 seconds it makes the hairs stand up as that was a real time to be young...1989 Acid house - Warehouse Raves - waiting for news of venues -waiting in convoys on motorways- loved up and going for it...anti-poll tax movement...NICE ONE SVIV - love it!
10. Another case of not looking properly before making a nom was my Busdriver "Unemployed Black Astronaut" track so seeing as he got there 58 minutes before me with it (which is about 2 minutes on RR i recks) it's TCM -
Well, after my statement about having too much to do and not having time for just-if-i-cayshuns - egg on my fizzog.
That was fun and much better than reports / references.

gremlinfc said...

Sorry TCM - this is not meant ot be thee definitive A-List but thought I'd follow Steen's suggestion and just get mine done. Look forward to reading everyone else's if they have time : isn't it amazing how you can "bend" time when you want to avoid work...

steenbeck said...

I'd absolutely second Maki as the list maker. You've done such a lovely job moderating so far. And we can all post dond lists if we feel up to it, just like Tin said.

Fintan28 - I think we all feel overwhelmed sometimes at the sheer volume of wonderful music we encounter through RR/'Spill, but it's worth it. (And so strangely addictive, somehow.) If you have questions about specific things, there's almost always somebody around to elucidate. Spotify is nice for the collaborative playlists, but I believe there's a licensing issue, and that's why it's not available in the US. I think you get a 2-week trial though. DId you try that? I might be wrong. The "DB" folder Maki mentioned is Dropbox, which has become a wonderful way for us to share music. If you ask Tincanman he might be able to help you with that, if you're interested. And Last.FM is a nice place to try. I believe it's English as well, but there don't seem to be any restrictions about browsing there, and it's a good way to share a link to a song if you want others to hear it.

Heh heh, I just read that back and it sounds more confusing than helpful. I remember when I first started reading RR blogs (2 1/2 years ago? Yikes!) it was so odd and intriguing -- all these lunatics speaking some strange but very funny and compelling language. I suppose the fact that it all makes sense now is the real cause for worry.

steenbeck said...

and who am I kidding. It most certainly does NOT all make sense now.

gremlinfc said...

Hope i didnt waste my time there though.

Makinavaja said...

No, gremlin - anything but a waste of time. A great read, specially as you got one of my noms on there. I'll be happy to do a personal and one off A if that's what's wanted. Morning all. Last night I dreamt . . .

THE WAILERS - Duppy Conqueror. A 'duppy' being a malevolent spirit. Which, of course, led me to . . .

CURTIS MAYFIELD - Sweet Exorcist.

Blimpy said...

@gremmers - engrossing is totally the right word!! i'll dond "crackerjack docker" cos it is the better song, i was torn betwix the vocational values of dockers vs butchers (hey, isn't that a Coachwhips LP?!!)

bishbosh said...

Nice list, gremmy. If this was the Mothership, I might well be outraged-of-Brixton at 'adored' being considered a vocation, but I'll let you off for that lovely, reminiscence-fuelled justification!

sonofwebcore said...

GREMLIN - Not a waste of time. Great reading. Glad you included Engine Driver. 'Twas the first Decemberists song I heard. It was on a free CD, you know, with a magazine you buy for the disc alone.

sonofwebcore said...

Ha Ha!! Jurgen Klinsmann!!

Wasn't he a good buy for Spurs. At the time it was really exciting that a player of his stature was coming to England. Spurs had a pre-season match against Luton(?). The Guardian interviewed their big centre-half. "I clattered him properly the first time he came near me. He got up, smiled and patted me on the back. So he's okay."

bishbosh said...

I believe tin nommed Mr Ambulance Driver up there somewhere *points up thread* but how about The Flaming Lips' "Race for the prize"?

Two scientists are racing
For the good of all mankind
Both of them side by side
So determined
Locked in heated battle
For the cure that is their prize
But it's so dangerous
But they're determined
Theirs is to win
If it kills them...

Sounds pretty vocational to me. (And yes, that probably is more than a third of the lyrics. So sue me...)

bishbosh said...

Come to think of it, battling pink robots is probably vocational for Yoshimi...

Her name is Yoshimi
she's a black belt in karate
working for the city
she has to discipline her body
'Cause she knows that
it's demanding
to defeat those evil machines...

Those Flaming Lips take their imaginary heroes' quests mighty seriously.

Hi, late as usual, have been ill all over Christmas and now back at work - enjoyed reading this - I'll nominate 'Green-toothed Gardener' by Steve Tilston which is probably un-findable on Googgle but appears on his first LP "An Acoustic Confusion", which I only have on vinyl ... so a complete waste of a nom really, but that never stopped me before.

tincanman said...

@ Ali
You'd be surprised what the google elves drop

@ Maki
Bit of advice: You started this with fun in mind, so keep it that way. If you agonize over who has how many 'maki A' lists, it won't be fun. I'd just pick 10 you're happy with and only then look up who nommed them. If its 3 for one person and none for another, so be it. Otherwise it'll be too stressful, and to be honest, a bit pointless.

sonofwebcore said...

They keep on coming . . .

THE POGUES - Navigator.

From whence the contraction 'navvy' arose.

Bus Driver - Muddy Waters
Cab Driver - The Mills Brothers
Station Man - Fleetwood Mac

all involving modes of transport to get you to -

The Wooodchopper's Ball - Woody Herman

Hip Hop Saved My Life - Lupe Fiasco

Dr. Dick - Lee Perry

The Decemberists have quite a few, don't they? What with all the Chimbley Sweeps and Chinese Trapeze artists. But I'm going with Eli The Barrow Boy, because it's so darn pretty, and because he pushes the wheelbarrow even after death.

sonofwebcore said...

STEENBECK - You jogged my memory. One that went down well o0n the Mothership . . .

MR. PERFECT - Handcart Boy.

I had thought that amongst all this talk of 'Vocations' nobody had mentioned the oldest profession in the world but then I heard 'Tecumsah Valley' by Townes Van Zandt via the dropbox (already knew it by the way). Anyway, in the same vein one for Maki's considerations before midnight tonight...

'Rene' - Small Faces

'There she is parading on the quayside
You can find her every night
Ah, waiting for a stevedore from Tyneside
Why It's Rene the dockers delight
Well, if you just got off an oil tanker
And you've got the readies in the bin
Just make your way down to The Crown & Anchor
Ask for Rene (ohh, hello ducks!) and you'll be well in.

MAKI’S LIST

Taking part in RR and joining the ‘Spill has been a humbling experience for me. Let me explain: I’ve always thought I knew a fair bit about music and, indeed, that has always been the consensus among family and friends. Can’t remember a song? Ask Maki, he’ll know! When did so-and-so release such-and-such? And what were the lyrics really about? Maki’ll know – let’s ask him! And guess what? It’s bollocks. Compared to most of you guys, I know nothing. Nada. Zilch.

The up-side of this – and boy, what an up-side! – is that thanks to all of you I have discovered a shed load of music that had escaped my radar (some new, some not-so-new) that has seriously enriched my listening life. For that; thank you!

All of this leads up to my trying to explain the reasoning behind this highly subjective and ultimately (in all senses of the word) irrelevant A-list. I have decided only to include songs I didn’t know or remember well before the thread started. Many of you will be amazed at the extent of my ignorance and for that I can only apologise whilst thanking you for helping me to something about it.

Makinavaja said...

First up (and in no particular order):

The Decemberists – I Was Born for the Stage

A vocation I very nearly shared and can heartily relate to. I love this live version for the audience participation. He was born for the stage and he knows how to work a crowd. The cheers, the boos – a rollicking and beautifully stage-managed live performance!

Barrington Levy – Shaolin Temple

Here’s the MFF phenomenom really raising its head. An early nom I listened to straightaway and just haven’t been able to get out of my head. I have no idea if it’s one of his best, or not. I just know that after repeated listens I haven’t tired of it.

The Small Faces – Song of a Baker

This group is familiar, of course. When I was at school this was the sort of thing the older boys, who hogged the Common Room record player, listened to all the time. Ogden’s Nut Flake with its cool sleeve was a favourite, of course, but I never paid attention. I was too intent on wresting control of said record player from them so I could listen to Slade. No apologies for the Slade obsession – it persists! – but I should have paid more attention!

Michael Marra – The Guernsey Kitchen Porter

For years I steadfastly refused to listen to folk music or anything that had even a whiff of beards, pipes (those you can smoke and those you can’t) and woolly jumpers. Then one summer back in my beloved Saltburn I stumbled on the Saltburn Folk Festival. I was entranced. The storytelling. The roots. I’m a neophite in these lairs. But I loved this.

Makinavaja said...

Over the Rhine – If a Song Could Be President

Beautiful voice. Beautiful idea. Oh yes, if a song could be president! For me a song about the purity of music about the good passions it inspires. Loved it and it’s from a genre I wouldn’t normally listen to so that’s another plus.

The Gordons – Coalminer’s Song

Loved the intro: the bass and simple but persistent riffing and all those toms. This is the sort of thing that really floats my boat. Maybe it doesn’t really go anywhere but I’m happy to follow it there!

Nick Cave – The Singer

I nommed El Cantante, which means the same thing, and I’ve always been a Nick Cave fan but somewhat from the sidelines. I love the way he squeezes the words in or draws them out – he should be shot at times for his diction but it always works. I love the sense of alienation that pervades so much of what he does. But I didn’t know this one, so it’s in.

The Flaming Lips – The Race for the Prize

Loved the mock-epicness of this. This is a group I thought I was familiar with and had rejected. I was wrong. Time to re-listen and find out what I missed!

Jack of My Trade - Sir Lord Comic

As the farmer said to the potato: I plant you now and I’ll eat you later. I was hooked from there on in. It lilts along so well. Upbeat and fun. Just how I feel!

The Grateful Dead – Playing in the Band

O.K. I’m cheating here! I love this song and always will. I couldn’t envisage an A list for this topic that didn’t include this one! Justification – I’m not sure I was ENTIRELY familiar with the version Chris put in the box!

Well, there it is. If I have upset anyone with this list, I apologise, but I doubt it. I think I know you well enough to feel safe about that. I have had enormous fun following a thread that came about as the result of a riposte to a steenbeck request on magicman’s earlier Roxy Music thread.

Nearly two hundred comments, a collabo with more than eighty songs and a score in DB!! As fintan said, we are daft. Really daft! But we have a lot of fun together and I love you all for that! Thank you all so much for a really worthwhile and enjoyable diversion in these happy festive times.

Keep on enjoying the music. MAKI.

Great job Maki. Loved the comments and justifications. You've done yourself proud, and thanks 'cause it's been a blast having this.

Have a great new year Mr.Maki- glad señoramaki is on the road to recuperacion and wishing you all ¡Feliz año nuevo!(bit early I know).
It will be interesting to see where croosovers are on lists and there are 2 on ours (at least 1 is a song and another a band different song) - one of the things i like about this phenomenon is the wide spread of tastes and while everyone might not have their own favourite genre (eclectic is probably the best word)you get an idea of what sort of music people have a penchant for (some are esier to spot than others!). If i could recommend a couple more Levy choons for your delectation: "Here I Come" probably his most successful song and almost crossed over into mainstream , classic line "Extra size, extra size, extra sizer than sizeway
extra broad, extra broad, extra broader than broadway".I bought that as a 12 inch single in 1985...it's much catchier than "Temple" and will have you seriously singing along! Trouble double double...i still love that track. Also "Black Roses" and "Murderer" are real BL classics.
Best wishes,
GFC.

BBC 4 at this moment is showing "Guitar Heroes at the BBC II" which sounds promising especially as it opened with the great Lulu show clip of Hendrix doing "Hey Joe"...guess who's on now...Status Quo "Down Down"...???
