Banjo Or Freakout!

This one's for all our resident 'Spiller banjo fans - banjo? check! build to a missive banjo climax? check! moreish and catchy tune? check! cheeky swearyness that stops you singing it infront of the kids? check! BANJO? CHECK!!!

The YFF (Young Folks' Folk, (c) Blimpy 2009) movement moves apace - rumour has it that Johnny Flynn has been recording with Laura Marling, y'know!

Hey, great stuff, loved that Blimpy, ta muchly. Here's Groanbox (Luminaire 18th October) playing Darling Lou and giving the banjo a good seeing to.

I've been encountering banjos a lot lately, probably from being at a lot of traditional Irish music sessions. Some day, I'll do what I've been threatening to do for years, and spend a month travelling up the West coast, stopping in at small pubs for sessions. It reminds me of a band I listened to years ago, when I was beginning to be curious about Irish trad, called Stockton's Wing, who incorporated it brilliantly, especially in a song called 'Over The Moors To Maggie'. I went to see Sharon Shannon play a few months ago, and she had as part of her band a man called Gerry O'Connor playing the banjo. The guy was amazing, and has loads of videos on YouTube. Recommended.

cheers for links

will give them a good listen while working..(all the covers)
they look so shy reading the lyrics.. felt for them, then felt very old! but superb voices... as ever.

(Domino just e-mailed.. 'All The King's Men is the second single from the Wild Beasts new album Two Dancers.
The digital bundle, which is out now, comes with a suitably atmospheric remix from Banjo Or Freakout'... just to have a vague link to this post..)

Cheers again.. so much music to get.. so little cash.

good luck with the editing.
