Let The Heat Melt Your Brain

Why Blimpy, you don't ask, who's that band that's topping your Last.fm chart?

Why it's Viva Voce! A Portland husband and wife duo who've now made five albums of skewed guitar heavy pop genius!

I haven't got the new LP yet, but I'm just checking out some of the songs the noo, and whereas they don't seem as bonkers as VV's old stuff, they seem to be mighty listenable!

So, here's a new one (I know there's a couple of 'Spillers who dig the Voce), an old classic, and their genius video for "From The Devil Himself":

Get Yr. Blood Sucked In is the only record I know by them, but it's definitely worth listening... first half of that record is amazing, especially "Drown Them Out"

..is that new one called 'Rose City'? I bought that one (as an US import) in my trusted record-shop a couple of months ago ( I uploaded it to my iTunes the end of May, iTunes tells me...), and it is great....

ps. does anyone here know Joy Zipper, another fascinating US male/female duo?

Evening all.

Donds to all the support for Get Yr Blood Sucked Out - the only Viva Voce I have. Butbutbut....

Why did no-one nominate We Do Not Fuck Around as an ace declaration of truth???? Just listen to that chorus: the first two lines repeating the title wash through like an unstoppable river bore, and then, just in case we didn't realise how serious this statement is meant, the third line jabs the line in your chest staccato-style - "We...Don't...FUCK...Around !!"

Oh, man we missed a trick there.

And as for Believer . . . I'm adding that to my pre-prepped list of 'Handclap Songs' when PaulMac finally succumbs.

Shane? You're on a PC, aren't you?

Start - Accessories - System Tools - Character Map.

In the Arial font, there's a heart-shape if you scroll 3/4 of the way down.

Good word of mouth on this band.

'Spill Collective noms on the Mothership? Now that's an interesting idea.

I'll add another dond, I really liked Get Yr Blood Sucked Out...I knew the name Viva Voce, but I think I thought they were some kind of nu-rave bandwagon-jumpers. cheers Blimpy!

sorry, I meant the song "From The Devil Himself"

Portland has a big rose festival, hence often calls itself the Rose City. (this is from memory, but I think it's right.)

Portland is an interesting musical city. It's quite small, relatively affluent and sedate for a U.S. city, halfway between the cooler Seattle and California. No heavy urban tension to stir the youth into guitar bashing. But home to some creative thoughtful and yet still passionate music makers.

I've told Steen she should move there. Surrounded by forests. Miles and miles of free access Pacific Ocean beach within an hour. Temperate climate. And its not like anything big has ever come out of New Jersey musically.

I've always wanted to go to Portland.

Let's start a 'Spill commune up in Portland!

Richmond Fontaine's home town, too.

I'm in, Blimpy! What are the good schools in the area? How do I break the news to DarceysMam??

tincanman said...

Maybe we could make it our sister city. How does one go about these things? Is there a sister city registry, like with weddings where you can post what you want and your guests can ignore it and get you what they can find on sale?

I know we're not officially a city, but we are a Blimpopolis. And I know I've got a bit of urban spread.

Mebbe we could twin the blog with a Portland based one?

The main paper for Portland is called the Oregonian, and has similar standards as the Guardian. Maybe they have a Loggers Recommend or something.

it's a dream of mine to make a pilgrimage to Portland...the home of US indie for sure...I met a Portlandian in a bar a while back and was very excited, but he didn't have a clue what I was talking about and hadn't even heard of Kill Rock Stars records!I mean...some people, tch...
