Mary Travers 1936-2009
Mary Travers, of Peter, Paul and Mary, has died of leukaemia at the age of 72.
People tended to be a bit sniffy about PP&M, thinking of them as a manufactured group (apparently the brief was for a handsome one, a funny one and a woman) or as protest-lite. I'd forgotten how much I used to like them before I saw the concert broadcast on BBC4 as part of the Folk America season. I especially liked her, not only for her gorgeous voice, but for the way she stood, with her fists clenched and flicking back her hair. She was in one of the documentaries in Folk America too, so we could see something was wrong as she was wearing an oxygen line...apparently she'd been ill for some time.
Anyway, a few of their tunes have been wafted my way by my iPod in the past few days...maybe those 'Spillers who don't like Dylan's voice will go for the PPM version of When The Ship Comes In.

My parents had an album by them called See What Tomorrow Brings. Cracking versions of contemporary folk (Lightfoot etc) plus some good trad arr.stuff. That's where my love of folk began. Still sounds good today. Unfair to call them -lite, and let's not forget they introduced many to Dylan.
They were about the first folk I listened to as well. My mom was a big fan, and I became one too. I remember when the Smothers Brothers and Limeliters - funny folk - was the only way to get on TV.
I saw a reunion concert PPM did a dozen(?) years ago and they really shone.
No PPM = No Kim Deal in Pixies = No Nirvana = No Britpop = etc etc
'No Britpop ='? Well what exactly?
No Kinks?
What i was trying to say was, had Frank Black not referenced PPM in his ad for a bass player, the last 20 years of music history would have been very very very different
I love their music. I offer my prayers and condolences to the family.
Wow, the anti-ad-free blog crowd is getting more cunning.
@shoey
We lost a singer but found a convenient vacation rental.
My mum had an EP with my favourite on :

In the box for you, gremlin - see if you still like it!
