I would also like to officially withdraw the comments i made about Alanis in the 90s.
The usual suspects:
Lianne Hall, Frightened Rabbit, Magazine, Nina Nastasia, Tindersticks, Laura Cantrell, Shallows, Goats, Alannis, Nick Cave, Jah Wobble
ah...I thought Abandon Ship was going to be Gallows....
It's not - but that's a good call.

shoey the 10" shellac disc gave the single it's 3 minute timing.. from about 1910 it became the standard size.. each record company also had its own colour of vinyl - (I think)...to differentiate them.
microgroove technology gave them the ability to have longer tracks on smaller discs (45's begening in '49ish - was it 'hey jude' that subverted this in the '60s (I know nothing about the Beatles- but think that was the track)
it's 20 years since I wrote my dissertation.. something about 'Fine art photography in commercial design - record sleeves and advertising' so the facts could be sketchy.. but I know I researched it!
(my mum had to proof read it because of my chronic dyslexia, 4AD got edited to fad all the way through - it made more sense to her that way)
just thought I'd mention it... love the tracks as ever.
@Shane, seem to recall that my Dad had some of these with the rest of his 78's.
Funny, the Alanis track left the biggest impression on me, too- nicely balanced somehow, good use of tension and release.
unusually mellow shoegazer playlist this week with lots of female singer-songwritery, which is no bad thing (although I have to confess to skipping Alanis, she's one of those people, like Jim Davidson and Jeremy Clarkson who can make me irritated just by thinking about them, not to put the self-pitying-faux-feminist warbler in the same category as those two giants of alpha-male chauvanist misogyny of course!)
but I loved the Laura Cantrell track especially and also Nina Nastasia and Thee More Shallows.
Alanis was the biggest surprise of the week for me - i.e how well that particular song held up. Agree she comes with some baggage, but a good song is a good song is a .....
you are right of course Shoey...there's a lot of bands that I can't stand who have one or two excellent songs that I like...
