Marconius, a few weeks ago he threatened to come after me with a slide rule. I emailed Prince Charles to ask him to email back if Nilp is the kind of architect he doesn't approve of and no reply so I've concluded he's the warm, fuzzy friendly organic kind.
Um, yep, it has Abahachi, but then that pic IS almost old enough to drink alcohol in its own right!!
I may well change it again soon; as it was that was my third attempt. Both the first two transgressed GU T&Cs, one on copyright, and both for featuring children (I thought my moniker kinda allowed for pics of me and Darcey, but no.)
@nilpferd, you, being an architect can, I know, fit any number of building designs on the back of an envelope. Luckily you have engineers with their 'modern day sliderules' (aka computers) to make sure your design stands up.
@everybody else, sorry. This is an age-old dispute which seems to have spilled onto t'spill. A bit like Catholic/Protestant, Right wing/Left Wing, Pete/Jordan. And basically we're lost if we can't slag each other off.
Anyway, off now to see what all this pics is about.
Ha ha, I knew that would get a bite, GI- I'm actually not really the back of an envelope type, but we do of course enjoy riling our engineers.. But I fully sympathise. I'm also more of the sort of architect who points out to the HVAC engineer that he's put his ventilation ducting where his drainage lines should be, and that the two really ought not to be mixed..
I think that should have been a "z" in sympathise. But since I use so many "z"'s in German, I try to compensate with "s"'s where possible when writing English. Just so you all know.
Not a bight for me in the A-List this week..... again. Ah well, I can console myself with my self-made list taken from all the drop box noms...
@nilpferd, yes, I have known many an architect who second-guesses where a wall or column needs to be. I assume that you are one of those. Unfortunately too many of the big name architects seem to want to defy gravity......(I won't name them for fear of their lawyers...)
This seems like a good time to ask a question that has long perplexed me: Could the big bad wold really and puff and blow little bo peep's house down? (Or whoever's house it was).
For argument's sake, lets assume an average-sized non-asthmatic wolf. I don't want to get sidetracked by pedantry.
I normally get on quite well with our structural engineers, hospital design doesn't bring huge demands on load bearing components, usually fire protection regs force us to close out fairly small compartments anyway, they might as well carry the building as well. The HVAC/E colleagues are more stretched, they are the ones we usually end up feuding with, with their "we'll sort it out on the building site" attitude.
Does anyone else know the children's book, The Three Little Wolves And The Big Bad Pig. It was one of the MissToffee's favourites when they was liddle piggies themselves ...
I liked this version of the three little pigs tale ... and I never swallow toads, especially orange ones.. if anybody chooses a bottle of Bruichladdich as their Avatar it will be down the hatch, though..
The chill out zone is now available on the lower storey for all engineers, frogs, architects and varieties of 'potami ... in the hope that a pre- mff fracas can be avoided
Scatter cushions have been spread and Mr Luke Haines is gently humming, in linen, just for you darlings xx
@tincanman, I've got and (more importantly) know how to use all sorts of computer programmes which determine the wind load on buildings(see my earlier conversation with nilpferd) Now, could you just please confirm....what is the orientation of the building (relative to polar north) that the big bad wolf wants to blow down, what is it's altitude above sea level, is it on an exposed slope, is it in the middle of the countryside or in the middle of a town, how far is it from the sea, has the wolf had any pneumatic illness in the past and could it pass a breath test?
That's all I need to know and for a small fee of 2 A-listers I can answer your question by saturday.
Did you nom When The Levee breaks Gordon? You may have received early payment: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/oct/08/readers-recommend-songs-rain
Internal wind load is often a significant element to be taken into consideration on structures (I'm not kidding either) but as long as we're not all inhaling at the same time at, say, the inclusion of a Kylie song in the A-List it shouldn't be a problem.
BTW, WTF am I doing still awake at this time of night? My appearance on last week's MMF (for all the good it did me in the A-Listers All Timers List) was a one-of which I regretted until Monday. So, will you all please stop making such interesting conversation and let me get off to bed before it gets so close to midnight that I think 'Aw, what the F...
The law of gravity is exerting a pull on my eyelids, this combined with my longitude of 09 13, 32 E, ie an hour ahead of most of you, means it doesn't take much of a wind to get this hippo horizontal at the moment.. sleep well..
Aw, what the F... you can kip at ours on Saturday afternoon whilst the girls are playing, and DarceysMam pumps FrauImmel for information on beating the school selection system in Calderdale.
Come on man, you've made it this far - stay up and I'll slip some extra heat into Saturday's teatime curry just for you ...
Yes, the children will be up early as usual AND I have the pleasure of their company ALL day as teachers are off developing professionally. Nite all - has been a slice
@Darceysdad, nope won't be able to sleep, I'm going to be getting you to use the ion thingy I lent you to 'record' some of my vinyl for my Cd for the RRNorth Social. And I'm not sure that frauimmel wants to recollect her Calderdale education experience. Either way who's going to be trying to control our three girls whilst all this happens.
@ Tatanka, it might be but, er,?....I never was any good at anagrams.
Those were really funny! I've never seen Flight of the Conchords, but now I plan to get the dvd. The woman that plays Mel is on the Daily Show sometimes.

OMG, I've been hacked!
Who posted this, really?
seriously?
Groar!!
Grunt!!!!
*paws ground, dimly sees Tincan*
*charges*
*Pokes tinny with sharp bit of nose, then tramples him into the savannah dust*
It makes it so much easier to collect scrap if you flatten Tin first ...
@ Blimpy
nah, 'twas me. I fess up.
Anyone want to buy a trampled tin -um- thingy?
Good thing you have a thick skin, Tinny!
Marconius, a few weeks ago he threatened to come after me with a slide rule. I emailed Prince Charles to ask him to email back if Nilp is the kind of architect he doesn't approve of and no reply so I've concluded he's the warm, fuzzy friendly organic kind.
I'm buying flat Tin futures ... how many have you got?
Are those three-toed duck-billed rhinopotammi joined at the hippo?
@ tincanman - that is SO me and you - I just don't remember anyone taking a picture when we were out there on the Veldt ...
Oh, sorry- is my Rhinopotamus bothering you?
Bad Rhinopotamus!! Get off Tin right now!!
It was actually a folding ruler, by the way.. more momentum, like Nunchucks.
Engineers use sliding rulers..
Engineers use sliding rulers.
You people have such great t-shirts. I went to uni and all I got was a dumb t-shirt. 'Suppose I should have enroled or something.
Is this the open topic for tonight , seeing as how they had to close down RR early 'cos of what DsD said?
If it gets too crowded feel free to join me at the topic below, I'll be serving tumbleweed twiglets and dips later.
Definition of a sliding ruler ..
Prince Charles on skis.
a) he's not a rule
b) he'd probably fall off
---
what did DsD say to get the blog closed?
He buked Bob Dylan again.
That's a sliding knob, not a sliding ruler.
Us ancient historians have deranged megalomaniac rulers who marry their sisters, make their horse a consul and smother dinner guests in rose petals.
Have you seen that DsD's new avatar has got hair?!?
Typical engineers. I could tell you stories..
Architects and their stories; after the first three, aren't they all the same?
Um, yep, it has Abahachi, but then that pic IS almost old enough to drink alcohol in its own right!!

Like this thread today - made me smile.
Thanks.
TY, how many damn stories can you fit on the back of an envelope, then?
wow, TY sure can type fast!
It's all Greek to me though
[Rising to the bait]

Oh dear, I do hope TB and tfd time their future RR posts well. That gaping nilpferd gob wouldn't even notice them disappearing down it ;-(
I think that should have been a "z" in sympathise. But since I use so many "z"'s in German, I try to compensate with "s"'s where possible when writing English. Just so you all know.
A list for rain is up
The A-list is out (not in list form, though, but the article). No new topic so far, though.
Gaping Gob?! Cheers!
...and with him talking about getting a bite...:-o
I tend to swallow things whole, if possible.. your little medallion won't even touch the sides...
Re Rain - DsD A-lists for the third week in the last four! Woo-hoo. I take back some of the things I said about PaulMac ...
... did I just say that out loud?
Anyway, I can't find any giveaway for what tonight's topic is. Anyone else found it?
Not a bight for me in the A-List this week..... again.

... and yet another blank week for me. I think I'll go off and whine for a while ...
Did I say stories .... pffft ... I meant storeys of course. Sorry if there's been any unpleazantness.
This seems like a good time to ask a question that has long perplexed me: Could the big bad wold really and puff and blow little bo peep's house down? (Or whoever's house it was).

@ tincanman - actually, that's not really true is it? You do want to be sidetracked ...
Does the wolf smoke?
well, yes. I don't want people counting how many A lists I got
Depends how close you can get to its tail with a bengal match ...

"Nice!"

Can you factor in internal wind load? Might be important where RRers are concerned ;)
Did you nom When The Levee breaks Gordon? You may have received early payment:

No he didn't, ejay. He nommed Zep's Fool In The Rain, I nommed The Rain Song, and I think it was lambretinha that nominated When The Levee Breaks
@ ejaydee, no I only donded that Led Zep track. I was only first with 'Fool In The Rain', which I noted you belatedly took a liking to.
Indeed I did! Led Zep does the carnival!

... OK and for me too!
Yes, the children will be up early as usual AND I have the pleasure of their company ALL day as teachers are off developing professionally.
Nite all - has been a slice
And I'm catching you in that all-time A-listers league table.
When's Marconius going to update the A-listings since July?
Just how loud is a hippo's snore? Nite, nite and don't let the tuned dampers bite.
gordonimmel ... isn't that an anagram of I'm'r gold lemon?
Ahh tcm ... I have passed beyond the joy of insect days.
@ TY - Gordon as a "gold lemon"?

Sorry Gordon ... just spiralling off into nonsense; just part of my pre MFF prep ... not personal :)
I didn't get any in the A, I'm going to go wine for a while.
Don't let the playa haters win SteenDog, they can't bring down the Champ!
I just really like songs about the rain.
Did you get 2 in, Ejay? and 2 good ones, too!
For what it's worth, I loved your songs. Ahem, I got 3 in I think.
Oh, yeah, I just read it again and figured that out. It's hard to tell sometimes without the list. 3 good ones!
Kinda peeved there's no room for Jorge Ben and The Prisonaires though...
The Prisonaires! I forgot about that one. I loved the Jorge Ben, too. It must have been hard to pick this week, they were all so good.
Hey Steen, there's a Tom Waits interview in the F&M section:

*Peeks in* Nothing yet?
Lazy songs!!!!!
What's all this about a wolf? Tin said the 'big bad wold' - those hills can be nasty buggers when they're riled, mind...
My new favourite show, the Hiphopopotamus vs. the Rhymenoceros
(I have a weird crush on Mel, help me!):

@catcher - !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know, I know, I can't help it!
I wish I'd seen this show before the Songs in french week, I really hope someone nommed this, it made me laugh to the point of pain:
