I Still Believe In Rock'n'Roll...

Well, up to a point. Welcome to the (much delayed) latest episode of Radio Abahachi, with additional contributions from Bailey the neurotic, insomniac, deaf, short-sighted, incontinent and dementia-inflicted greyhound, in which I offer a mirror image of Japanther's recent podcast by charting a confirmed jazz fan's recent adventures in contemporary, erm, stuff...

BLOODY HELL. How come in the original version my first talking bit started perfectly at the end of the Joe Harriott track Calypso (as nominated over on the Mothership), and now it overlaps with the last thirty seconds of the track? Okay, not a problem for the rest of you who've tuned in for the music rather than the rambling, but very very annoying as I don't remotely have time to fix it...

Damn, the entire thing is out of sync. Don't listen to it yet, and I'll try to get a remastered copy posted by lunchtime.

Meanwhile I'll look at that lovely greyhound, I like sighthounds though I've never owned one.

excellent podcast Abahachi, made me feel all warm inside that the circle of giving that is the 'spill is alive and well.

And really interesting that just when i'm stepping back and discovering this whole world i've missed, you're moving forward and picking out all the new stuff!
And, although of course I do still listen to a lot of rock/indie/metal/noise, I am finding it sounding more samey...just like you said happened to you 10 years ago, which goes to show that it's not the music scene that changes, it's the person, or the persons perception at least.

Loved all the music played, but didn't catch the name of the second to last track???

That live version of MFS at the end was FIERCE and sounded phenomenal through my inner-ear 'phones! They are one of a select few bands whos albums I buy unquestioningly, knowing they will always be great.

BTW, secondhand records , at least the battered cheap re-presses I buy, ARE dead cheap over here. About 2 quid for "Kind Of Blue" and just under 3 for Mingus' "Pithecanthropus Erectus", to give just a couple of examples!

Oh good, someone is listening... I really picked a spectacularly bad time to post this.

I can well imagine that post-rock or noise-rock or whatever it is that Mogwai do can wear very thin extremely quickly, and I have no doubt that there are legions of pale imitations out there. Still can't be as bad as the legions of pale imitations of pale imitations of marginally less pale 90s imitations of 80s indie or late 70s new wave. I will probably be saved from overdose by the fact that I'm still hooked on jazz and still exploring electronica as well, and the budget will stretch only so far.

The second-to-last track is by the Belbury Poly, From a Distant Star, from the album of the same name, which, as I said, I found overall slightly disappointing, especially compared with the Grauniad's rave 5-star review. What is essential is the download-only Ritual and Education compilation from Ghost Box, which includes the best tracks from the Belbury Poly album and a whole load of brilliant stuff.

Finally got around to this, and boy am I glad I did. Loved the music, loved the analysis; just great. Your voice is becoming very, VERY comfortable on air, Abahachi, and the whole thing just flowed brilliantly.

It is all far too erudite for my liking, mind. Every 'cast I listen to seems to raise the bar for what is acceptable to post.

Just makes my tentative fumblings with my newly-acquired mic and Audacity seem even more gauche ...

Cheers, and goodnight.
