Shiv's shelves

I'm posting this because Shiv asked me on RR whether my new bookshelves were adjustable enough to hold LPs. Yes they are, for height, but as you see they're not really deep enough!

Cheap as chipboard, though.

is that a "billy" - a design classic no less - i have 4 on my landing (only housing 7"s and cds - no 12"s tho)

I'm billy-ed up from ceiling to floor - but just for CDs. I wouldn't have thought that the shelves would be strong enough to hold vinyl ...

The bottom one would be OK, because there's an extra strengthening piece.

Note the whisky glass - I had to have a sharpener when I found out I was going to have to do some of my own drilling, grr. But I bought 8 bookcases and I've put up 4 of them today so I'm quite proud.

We've still got a couple of Billys, but I really gave up with IKEA for CD storage when the draw-ed predecessor to Billy gave up the ghost under the weight pressure.

We get most of our furniture made to order now, including the full-wall, floor-to-ceiling CD shelving unit in my office ... which is now very, VERY full.

I have half a dozen Billies in my "den". The bottom shelves are reserved for vinyl. We also have four of those CD tower thingies in the living room under the window. (Turned on their sides and placed one on top of another). Cd's and DVD's there. This was Mrs Maki's idea as we couldn't find a shelving system that fitted in the space (just over a metre high and just over 2 metres long). The thing is no-one's spotted that they're actually towers turned on their sides and we're often asked where we found such a practical piece of furniture!

I appreciate this tfd - it's also valuable grist for researchers of 21st century life when they comb this blog for clues in 400 years time, of course.

Are these the same shelves Lucy Mangle was writing about in The Graudinia the other week? This is sort of what I'm looking for - height and depth are OK - but those shelves look awfully flimsy to hold my many miles of vinyl, especially if I go up onto a second shelf. Some of my arty/coffee-tabley books (all from remainder shops; I'm not a bloated plutocrat yet) are extraordinarily heavy, too... I think the search continues.

Do I win a prize for identifying the ISB album on the second shelf up? Less sure what the translucent liquid in the whisky glass is... Dumfries firewater?

"Dumfries firewater?"

We have a presentation bottle from the last days of the now defunct Bladnoch Distillery, laid down and awaiting the birth of our first grandchild. It's going to be a long wait, the girls are only 8 & (almost) 4 !!!

Shiv, they're stronger than they look, but see above for a more expert opinion. Yes, Lucy M did write about them.

The CD is the ISB's first album and the album on the bottom shelf is Freedom And Rain. The firewater was Tesco's own brand - glass now empty.

if you are not going to make shelves yourself then b&q do:
Form pine cube shelving.. 2 by 4 squares, most importantly 13" by 13" by 13" inside the cube.... they've held up a vast amount of my vinyl and art books for many years.

I put them on their side and stack them up... very strong and quick to put up.... (but buying the wood and making them would be cheaper!)

Two big, white Billys in the sitting room, coping pretty well with an array of paerbacks, hardbacks, dvds cds, a smattering of vinyl, photos, glassware and, er, a small portrait of Samuel Beckett.

The rest of the (on display) cds are divided up between a couple of dark blue Robins. Remember Robins? They don't make Robins any more. I reckon I'd sell my hat for one. And it's a nice hat, too. Ah well.

Funny what gets you going, no?

Um, yeah.

Shiv: My brother's (who's a DJ) many vynils all fit in Billys, although they do peek out by about 2cm.

Snadfrod! Fancy seeing you here! I see you're still sticking with the job and family thing, eh?

Oh yeah. Billy brought me back...

I am indeed sticking with that whole thing (no nanoFrod yet, though) and have ended up working bloody long days and never quite having the energy to blog. Plus, after a while, it becomes weirdly difficult to just dive back in. I've kept up reading, though (gone goneforeign? weirdness...) and have made hearty resolutions to be better etc etc etc.

Also, this evening, I've just noticed Blimpy's albums of the decade post. Red rag to a bull. I'm off for a think...

Storing vinyl ...? Without embarrassing bending? Dexion's Mid Height Runners are what you're after ...

Thank you, all. I'm ruminating over your comments in best Eeyore-ish fashion and will doubtless cough up a thistleball in due course.

Of course, the alternative is to sell all my vinyl (setting up as an e-Bay entrepreneur is probably another thread) - I've maybe only played about a dozen proper records all year, and most of those were half-remembered 7"ers for RR duties - but I need to try one of these transfer-your-vinyl-to-MP3 gizmos first...

Be seeing you.
