So I tried a little Freddie - FP's Vimmy playlist

Haven't done one of these for a while. I had a busy summer with ma n' pa over and then things at work got horrendously busy too. I liked this week's theme in spite of initial reservations that it is waaaaaay tooooooo broad and that the old lags amongst you will remember Dorian's "sonic tonic" list many moons ago. The theme threw up some wonderful suggestions and, applying my own rule that these have to be songs that make me jig up and down, I have selected ten of the vimmiest tunes I know. All of these songs have been there for me at various times in my life when I have just needed an extra kick. Well, it's better than OD-ing on Red Bull!

Question to go. I daren't actually count the days but I know we're only a kick in the pants off Christmas (that's that Geordie expression again Toffee - it means 'not very far from'). Frogprince and I are sorted present-wise. I shall kiss a tearful goodbye to our old and faithful cathode ray tube telly which has served us splendidly over the years and we will invest in a not too large but hopefully beautiful HD flat screen fuck off model. Well with all the fillums I watch and Frogprince's documentaries we really have to get round to it. Some time. I just hope it doesn't conk out on us after three years whereas the old one has given brilliant service. And over to you. Now's the time. For all your loved ones who may be, even as I type, scratching their heads and whizzing frantically round Amazon trying NOT to buy whatever TV chef cookbook is at number one.. WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT FOR CHRISTMAS? And what will you probably be getting....?

What I really, really want is Blixa Bargeld, gift wrap optional, but what I'll probably get (which will make me almost as happy) is a selection of Body Shop products, some Strawberry Wine from the Cornish Mead Company, lovingly decorated plant pots/jewellery boxes/pine cones from my offspring and mostly money apart from that. Christmas is more fun when you're little and just want Ballet Dancer Sindy, I think.

Thanks for the chuckle, Beth. My pals in Berlin know Blixa. He's a good bloke apparently. Very smart and clever. Have a feeling that if I had him delivered you might have to play with him on alternate days - sharing with Mnemonic. If we put in a joint order do you think we could chuck in Vincent Cassel for me as a job lot? But the Body Shop's always a good bet - we've got on here now. Their shea butter lip balm is brilliant for the sub-zero temperatures.

Although in the logic of the Christmas double special offer it would be more likely we could get hold of the Blixa Bargeld - Campino gift pack. In which case I'll have Campino. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

:-) I think his wife and little daughter might object if I stole him anyway, he seems quite a lovely, mellow chap these days, I gather, from watching a German documentary dubbed into French which challenged my language skills somewhat.

I didn't know Mnemonic was a fan, I would share of course!

The body shop have brought out a load of things they used to make in the 1980s, banana conditioner, dewberry body wash and, as I used them then, I am quite excited. Have to take pleasures where I find them.

FP said...

BANANA CONDITIONER?????????????? You'll be telling me they still do the coconut hair gel.........!!!!! Memories. (Jack Black voice) SUB-QUESTION from me and Beth - also linked to mine but we're fine tuning here- favourite Body Shop product. Sticking with the Shea lip butter but very fond memories of the aforementioned banana conditioner.

I haven't forgiven Body Shop for their habit of discontinuing ranges of shampoo the moment that I got used to a new variety after they'd discontinued my previous favourite. No more: now have to stockpile Rausch Meerestang whenever I'm over in Germany.

What would I really like for Christmas?

Some work, please, so that I can pay for Christmas.

:o(

FP said...

Indeed Hach - I wonder if they still do the ginger shampoo that I used to like or indeed the ice blue that I used to buy for my Dad Every. Single. Year. That's when I realised he didn't ACTUALLY like Old Spice or Brut....
----
Darce - I realise how expensive Chrimbo must be when you have wee girls and the ad man is bombarding them relentlessly with images of whatever the Next Big Toy is. I really hope thing pick up for you in your line of work. And I hope that feeble pun made you at least grimace....

My favourite Body Shop product would be Annie's Oil perfume, not Ananya, but they discontinued it in about 1990 and no employee I've met has heard of it. A good friend always wore it and I miss the scent.

Abahachi, I agree with you about the discontinuing, when they got rid of their 00 very pale foundation I was outraged! Surely there are still people who want to look pale and interesting in the world?

Good luck with the work DD.

@ TB ... you know what you're going to get though don't you? Tony Blair as European President.

ToffeeBoy said...

@ TY - I was gonna say, I'd settle for a new iPod - but now you've gone and spoilt the surprise!

FP said...

Ha Ha. I was following the Blair thing with obvious interest but it seems that Sarko and Merkel aren't playing ball as they want someone from the prevailing centre right. Watch this space. I'd like a new i pod too. In fact I'd like an i Pod at all. They do such awfully nice colours nowadays. We got a lovely fluorescent violet one as a leaving present for a colleague and I admit to wanting it rather badly....

What I'd really like for Christmas is for the whole thing to disappear and be replaced by a long, warm, sunny day. No, wait, make that a week of long, warm, sunny days.
What I will get is the usual dull family rituals and crap TV.

treefrogdemon said...

At the risk of being soppy...oh well, what the hell: I want both my daughters, their partners and my grandsons to make it up here for Christmas. If I get that I don't care what else I get! (But I'll get some artwork by Ivan I'm sure.)

tincanman said...

he he, listen to yourself FP.
They do ipods in such nice colours these days. Oh yeah, not like back in the day when you had to ride 25 miles to school through 6' snow drifts on a lame horse with nothing but a plain black coal powered ipod for company.

I'm with TFD: Doubt I'll see my boys this year, which sucks. Lots of step-kids and step-dogs though!

AliMunday said...

What do I want? An extension with a toy room and an art room and level access to the garden and a new kitchen without drafts. What will I get? Chicken manure pellets for the garden, probably (it's what I always ask for)!

Abahachi said...

I'm going to be in the Bayerishe Wald, so what I really really want is enough snow for Langlauf. Failing that, anothe bright fluorescent cycling jersey will do nicely.

DarceysDad said...

@ Shoey - Oh don't worry, my friend, already seen it, ripped it, copied it into my selection of background video clips (that I leave playing on the laptop in clients' training rooms).

I'll say one thing though; either most of those boxes were empty, or it was an AWFUL lot more than the sixty-grand's-worth of stock that the ITN report said it was.

Mnemonic said...

Beth, I was going to say you'd have to fight me for Blixa but FP has already done a good sharing suggestion there. I could always have James Marsters as a consolation prize.

More realistically, some pretty earrings would be nice, seeing as I finally got round to having my ears pierced last year..

Body Shop's grapefruit shampoo was a favourite, then when they discontinued that, the ginger one. I've given up on them now and buy Tesco's. I got really annoyed when they discontinued the large bottle sizes too.

Abahachi said...

I liked the grapefruit one too. Did all this happen after they sold out to evil capitalists, or were they always like this?

Morning all, thanks for those comments. Catching up on you all.

Chris I hope you get some nice food and wine to make the thing bearable. And have some pity for me. I'm staying in France for Christmas this year. The telly is sooooooooooooo much worse than GB. I won't even be getting Morecambe and Wise. Or the Snowman. Boo Hoo. I met a very nice producer of animated films in Cannes this year and we got chatting about money, financing etc. Then I said "So what kind of stuff do you produce? What have you done?" He modestly said "Well I did a Raymond Briggs cartoon called "The Snowman - do you know it?" Do I know it? I think every bit of the family has the DVD in the cupboard and we watch it every Chrimbo without fail. He was genuinely chuffed at my Ohmagawd star struck reaction. Nice bloke.
---
TFD - wish I could hire a helly - one of those big double propellor military ones to get them up to you.
----
Tinny: Sorry, but I'm going to have to do this... "Plain Black coal powered? Luxury!!! My iPod was spot welded together from bits of rotten steel my grandfather stole from the mine, hiding them in his overalls as he made that long climb up to daylight in the cage. It was powered by plugging it in to an old pushbike that my 5 year old sister had to peddle. 2 hours work let you listen to one song. and it only stored one song.. :-))
----
Ali: That's eco-fertiliser, right? Very laudible. Impressed.
----
Herr Hach: Hals und Beinbruch. Though not necessarily in that order. Hope the snow's deep and powdery. That right for Langlauf? I know bugger all about skiing. Except that I like apres-ski.
----
Darce: Thought we'd get an expert's eye on that clip...
----
Mnemonic - I remember your needle trauma. But there's so much nice stuff around for pierced ears. Mine are too. Since adolescence. Hope you get lots of lovely pairs to change with. I'm just remembering that the Body Shop not only did big bottles - they also offered a refill service so you could re-use your bottles. Now really upset me and tell me they've abandoned that too. I really hope not.

Mnemonic, my friend Helen and I are already sharing James Masters, but I guess we could draw up a rota?

Lordy, we like our men dark with razor sharp cheek bones! (I mean dark in the Gothic sense - Masters is very blond). Ummm. Can I be on that rota please?

@ FP
Kids today - they just do know how soft they go it.

A pushbike? You were so posh.

As for Christmas videos, I have a few I could dropbox.

Cheers Tinny! Actually - know what I would really like? A recommendation for good free software to rip my audio CDs into MP3 format on the Mac. I have grabber on an old PC and that works wonderfully. But what can I download for the Mac? Advice on that would be very much appreciated!

tincanman said...

ejay or blimpy is probably best for that.
barring tha, I can tell you what is said on a couple of good blogs I read, but better to get advice from a mac person who's actually used the stuff. Let me know if neither of those two layabouts, nay lets call 'em ne'er do wells - responds.

DarceysDad said...

@ fp - don't you have iTunes?? Shoey told me (though I've forgotten again now) how to change your iTunes settings to automatically import CDs as mp3 rather than m4a.

FillistinePee said...

Cheers guys - a big D'Oh! there. my MP3 player is actually a (gulp) Samsung. I really don't own an iPod. Does that make me as bad person ?;-))) I can hook it up to iTunes, though, right? No?

nilpferd said...

I also use a Samsung MP3 player, and I-tunes to rip cds. You can't synchronize it with I-tunes, though. I modified my Samsung to act as a flash drive, so I can just copy files to it. If you use the Samsung software to load your MP3 player, you will just need to change the settings on I-tunes to save files as MP3s, and you can also use it to rip cds.
In I-tunes, go to:
Edit->Settings->General->Import settings for cds..

Select MP3 converter in the upper menu. It helps if you tick the box which calls up playlist information automatically, too.
I hope you can find it with these directions, I am translating from the German so may not have the names completely right.

FP said...

Oh cheers NPf. Your credit card still intact after yesterday's Einkaufsrausch?

nilpferd said...

We didn't actually do any shopping.. just watched a fire show, popped in briefly for a friend's 50th, made it back into town for the fireworks, then came home.. someone has to show a bit of restraint during these shopping orgies, after all we do live in Schwabenland.. and apart from that my credit card has Berührungsangst and a momentary allergy to magnetism, so I have to keep it away from those swipe-readers...

FP said...

Oh Respect. Those Einkaufsveranstaltungen are organised to put you under maximum pressure. You got through unscathed nice one! If you and the family make it to our Weihnachtsmarkt - let me know! That goes for any other 'Spillers too!
