The Kent Soul label says this about JW ALexander: "...in 1965, it was [...] common to hear soul records that contained the kind of sentiments expressed in former Pilgrim Traveler, and manager/confidante of the late Sam Cooke, J W Alexander's 'Keep A Light...'"
Here's what Harmless Redords says about The New York COmmunity CHoir: "[They] focused around director, writer and arranger Benny Diggs. Although a cracking gospel unit, their recordings were often pretty unconventional. Inthe early '70s, they teamed up with black female poet and 'Soul' TV presenter, Nikki GIovanni, cutting 2 albums with her - 'Truth Is On Its Way' and 'Like A Ripple On A Pond'" The song is available on the brilliant Soul Gospel vol. 2 compilation (vol. 1 isn't bad either).
Diana & Marvin also sang a version on their album.
Which Kent album is it on? I have about twenty of them up in the attic - I must get round to mp3-ing them all sometime as I'm sure there are some undiscovered gems around.

Thanks Shane, I haven't got round to yours yet. 4 is a bit of a remnant of last week's theme.

It's from Does Anybody Know I'm Here? The Vietnam war themed compilation follow-up to A Soldier's Sad Story.
Terrific "light my fire" cover. Enjoyed the rest of the R&B and funk stuff too.
