It's...name....that....SAMPLE!!

Over on the Mothership I posted a link to a J. Dilla-produced song Where Do We Go. The song was a tribute to Weldon Irvine, who was Nina Simone's band leader, wrote the song Young Gifted and Black and was a mentor to Q-Tip and Mos Def. This edition of name that sample follows his song We Gettin Down...

To the ATCQ song Award Tour...

Also sampled in the song are Malcolm McClaren's Hobo ,
Milt Jackson's Olinga and Charles Earland's Lowdown

Thanks, Ejaydee, I love it! it's so good just to hear their voices . That bassline reminds me of something. What could it be? I saw Idlewild a few weeks back (speaking of musicals) It's one of those movies that has so much going for it, but for me it just never came together. Did you see it? Visually it's beautiful, and it's got this great animation element going on, which I love. I think the screenplay was lacking, especially in the portrayal of the women, who you had to feel pretty strongly about for the whole thing to work. And the music was great, obviously, but...I couldn't shake the feeling that I was watching a long music video. And I think their personalities are so vivid as Outkast that it's hard to forget about that and believe in them as these other characters. I think their acting was fine, but I hope they don't really give up music to pursue it.

ANd thanks for mentioning Jean Redpath over on RR proper. I was going to bring her up, but thought I'd already mentioned so many I'd restrain myself.

Well, I came back from a few days away to the full wrath of the stomach virus I'd been boasting about fighting off. Just starting to feel a little better, but...bleh. I'm sorry to have missed such good discussions here and on the mothership. Goneforeign's right, this is a good community.

Well, the film was pretty much what I excepted. Not necessarily bad, but when rappers have film projects, directed by their favourite music video director, the most likely outcome is always a long music video, and the screenplays are often cliché, even though the acting is always competent (I think it comes from being comfortable with the camera... from shooting videos). I've seen Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg's Car Wash, Hype Williams' Belly, and it was pretty much the same verdict overall. I thought their characters fit them exactly, Andre 3000 is a bit of a relative loner wierdo and Big Boi has relationship issues, to caricature. I know Andre is taking acting pretty seriously though. I think he studied acting at USC.

About the song, I think it sounds like very early Outkast, or somebody else, but old in a good way.
About Jean Redpath, and Donnez-Moi Pauline, did you remove them from your podbean list? If you did could you send them over please, so I can review them for educational purposes?

Hope you're feeling better.

Ejaydee, put them both back in the pod. So it should work.
