Hip Prog!

I know next to nothing about Hip-Hop. But I would never have imagined anyone sampling Mostly Autumn.

The song being sampled is "Silver Glass" from the album "Heart Full of Sky", with then keyboard player singing lead. I think they've speeded up his vocal a bit; he doesn't sing that high.

Any of our resident hip-hop experts (Ejaydee?) know anything about this artist?

It's had very mixed reactions on the Mostly Autumn forum...

I'd love to know how they came to use this sample!

No, I;ve got it!! It's a Mostly Autumn side-project, right?

I think I know who Hell Rell is, or at least I must have heard the name, youtube tells me he's part of Dip Set a Harlem-based crew whose leader is Cam'ron, but Wikipedia tells me he's only been active since 2003, and I've only cared for one Dip Set song since then.

The extremely wide variety of sampling sources in Hip Hop will never cease to amaze me. I wonder if Mostly Autumn will allow this to be released commercially.

Can't answer that question, Ejaydee - I've emailed Chris Johnson (who's no longer in Mostly Autumn, but wrote that song) asking if he knew anything about it.

It is a bit dull.

Not a hip-hop fan really.

Well, if it makes people search out the original.

Chris J hadn't heard anything about it until yesterday.

Out of interest Tim, when are MA or any of their related bands likely to be heading down to my neck of the woods?

I'd like to see the band that Olivia fronts, Breathing Space isn't it?

There should be more prog / hip-hop crossovers. The only other one i can think of off the top of my head was Ghostface's brilliant Block Rock which samples Novalis' Dronz.

@Carole:

Breathing Space aren't playing anywhere outside the north of England for the rest of the year. Panic Room have gigs in Aylesbury (Oct 25th) and Bedford (Nov 13th)

MA's December tour includes Bilston and Southampton, which is as close to Bristol as they get.

On the other hand, if you treat yourself to a long weekend in York the first weekend in December, you can see both Mostly Autumn and Breathing Space on consecutive nights. Go on, you know you want to.

We could be tempted Tim, what are the actual dates?

MA at The Grand Opera House Saturday 5th Dec, Breathing Space at The Duchess on Sunday 6th.

I can't make the gigs, folks, but if you do come up for the weekend and fancy Sunday lunch somewhere ...

I may have to look for reasonably priced hotels, it would be nice to have weekend away.

I'll give it some thought.

I'm definitely going to be in York during the day on the Sunday (and possibly Saturday as well).

The answer to that one appears to be "Yes" - last weekend I spoke to Chris Johnson (who's no longer a member of Mostly Autumn but wrote "Silver Glass") and he told me Hell Rell's "Your Side" is getting an official release, and Chris is expecting tow be getting royalties for the use of the sample.

@Carolebristol

You missed a great weekend in York; three great gigs from four great bands, and I got to meet almost everyone in each the band over the course of the weekend.
