and where's anonymous when you need him?

steenbeck said...

Egon Schiele? David's fav. I'm not at the social. I'm sewing halloween costumes!

steenbeck said...

I'm going to have to start posting pictures of scantily clad/suggestively posed men on here, to even things up

Blimpy said...

Schiele's a complete perv. Fact. Good painter though.

ShariVari said...

I'm looking forward to going back to see the Schieles in the Leopold Museum in three weeks.

Blimpy said...

My parents had this painting up for years and years - it was only once I went through puberty that I realised that she may as well be naked. Funny the stuff you notice....

nilpferd said...

Sorry you had to find out this way, blimp.. guess it's for the best.. no hard feelings..

nilpferd said...

Puberty? Naked? My god, Blimpy! Without your glasses, your..

sorry. Stir crazy.

Love the Schiele.

I actually won't be around tomorrow because of an Anouar Brahem concert- first one with Mara- and an exhibition of artefacts from Alexander the Great's time around the Oxus.

(I can hear the Blimpian Waa-hay from here)

steenbeck said...

We saw the funniest movie about Egon Schiele. A german Bio-pic. It was very soft core porn, all soft-focus and lingerie.

saneshane said...

Have you seen the inner sleeve to the wild beasts LP? so beautiful it will get framed.
Very Very Schiele in style..(but just faces hugging)

I'm not at the social either, was going to make it, but the house building has taken over.

nilpferd said...

Ugh, Steen. That sounds awful.
How horrible.

The tastelessness of some people.

Um- what was it -er- called?

Blimpy said...

was it this one:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082311/

sometimes it's ALWAYS good to spend "time around the oxus", no?

Blimpy said...

.....WA-HEY!!!

nilpferd said...

(scribbles title down feverishly, tries to think of something off-hand to say)

Um.. ya gotta love the translation of the title..
German, Exzess und Bestrafung
English, Excess and Punishment
French, Enfer et Passion

Spot the odd one out.. clue- in German, Bestrafung= Punishment

I always recommend a bit of time around the Oxus, at least once a week. More often if you get the chance.
Seriously, Oxus-wise I need to put in a shout for Robert Byron's brilliant 30's travelogue, The road to Oxiana. Very funny, and extremely relevant for understanding what is going on in Afghanistan today.

nilpferd said...

I didn't hear THAT Wa-hey, strangely enough..

Carole said...

I am a big fan of Egon Schiele's work myself.

I am as guilty as anyone of not 'Spilling much.

I read pretty much everything, I just don't reply often.

I'll be putting a playlist together soon, hopefully tomorrow.

steenbeck said...

I do believe that's the one. Even the title is funny. Excess and Punishment. Tee hee.

Sounds disgusting.
Tut.

Um- remember the name?

Are we talking roll-on, roll-off here?

And do you have an intercity supplement for your Interrail pass?

I remember seeing a great Schiele exhibition in Hamburg about a decade ago.. how time flies.

nilpferd said...

In fact, it was the Leopold Sammlung, in 1996, at the Hamburger Kunsthalle.. just across the road from the railway station, handy for quick getaways..

Sharivari- if you haven't seen the Breughels at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, I'd recommend them.

Abahachi said...

It is a bit odd. I know I haven't been around too much - and I know I promised a new Radio Abahachi several weeks ago - but that's entirely due to the start of term combined with a huge pile of other stuff. I have been making the effort at least to join in with EOTWQ - and one thing I've noticed recently is that it seems to last for less time, people stop reading and commenting after barely a couple of days. Whether we have too many individual posts so that people stop scrolling down to earlier ones, which is how it felt last week, or whether the inconsequential chit-chat starts on the Mothership earlier so people hang around there rather than here...

Thing is, I just don;t have time to do a proper post at the moment; I really want to find a shoulder to cry on for the news yesterday that there may never be another Fever Ray album, coupled with mild disappointment that the Grauniad's free download suggests that this is an artist whose live shows are too close to the original record for my liking. We could tie this into the discussion on RR about solos; I have no problem with composed solos on records, but I hate it when a band feels it has to reproduce the solo exactly in live performance - one of the reasons why Dire Straits are a great band, as they can improvise properly...

TatankaYotanka said...

My wife insured with Schiele's Wheels but I lost her no claims bonus and now Breughel's mad at me ...

ShariVari said...

I have seen the Breughels. They're fantastic! If you have any art-based recommendations for Berlin or Prague as well, they'd be gratefully received.

The talk of Schiele being a bit pervy reminds me of Oskar Kokoschka and his legendary Alma doll. His muse / lover married another man so he asked the finest dollmaker in Vienna to create a realistic replica of her, for an artistic model and other less savoury purposes. She was meant to have the exact same proportions, be anatomically correct and have lifelike, soft skin. He was somewhat disappointed when he was given what looked like a giant rag doll made out of polar bear fur. They had what i assume was a replica at a special exhibition at the Belvedere in 2007 and it was one of the most amusing things i've ever seen in my life.

saneshane said...

you want a porcelain doll and end up with a old rag doll covered in polar bear fur.

...as the clocks go back and the cold nights draw in.. think how cosy and warm you'll be!

All wrong, the Bob Log III song was called "Boob Scotch". And as Tom Waits once said:

"And then there’s this guy named Bob Log, you ever heard of him? He’s this little kid — nobody ever knows how old he is — wears a motorcycle helmet and he has a microphone inside of it and he puts the glass over the front so you can’t see his face, and plays slide guitar. It’s just the loudest strangest stuff you’ve ever heard. You don’t understand one word he’s saying. I like people who glue macaroni on to a piece of cardboard and paint it gold. That’s what I aspire to basically.”

Blimpy said...

I can't believe I just watched some of the video for Bob Log III's song "Clap Your Tits" - I mean, what, really, was I expecting, eh?

Based on a visit in summer..
Prague- definitely the Czech Cubism Museum. Firstly, the building itself is very interesting, it is what it says.
Three stories of exhibition- bottom and middle, not very good sculpture, derivative painting, some nice furniture. But on top are some fantastic little watercolours by Joseph Čapek, Karel's brother. Standing there looking at works of such delicacy and beauty, then reading that he was murdered 1945 in Bergen-Belson, is a moment when rage and sadness nearly overwhelmed us.
If you're at all interested in architecture or interior design, visit the Müller House by Adolph Loos, near the castle. It has been restored and has wonderful, interlocking interiors, don't be put off by the simple exterior. Website here..

The Martin Gropius Bau generally has very good art exhibitions. Right now they are running a Futurists exhibition.

Mies van der Rohe's Neue Nationalgalerie has a very good modern collection and is worth a visit for the building itself.

The Jewish Museum is a building which shouldn't be missed.

didn't Kurt Vonneguts 'Bluebird' have an abstract painting made from breakfast cereal painted over that sold for loads but then fell apart...

"That’s what I aspire to basically"

I did a series of photographs as a student printed on water colour paper then inked over and bleached.. frame them in sunlight.. the bleach ate away at the image until finally you ended with a piece of paper..

I talked it up as a 'CONCEPT' looked cool for a while!

nilpferd said...

OK; people! Mission accomplished; lets move it on out.
Abahachi- on yer bike.
Steen, grab the dirty videos.
Shane, pick up all the paper. No, I don't care if the pictures have disappeared- it's still your responsibility.
TY- you deal with the soup. No, I don't happen to have a nipple cup on me. Do I look like I'm lactating. Throw a towel over it or something.
SV- the doll is coming with us. I know, we'll have it cleaned later.
Carole, I said Steen will take care of the videos.

KOVE it, Peepol!!

steenbeck said...

D'oh, sorry, definitely attracting the WRONG kind of extra traffic with that comment.

nilpferd said...

Are you talking about me, Steen!!

Did I just type "KOVE it" above?

Blimpy said...

KOVE IT!!?!!

SIR, YES SIR!!

nilpferd said...

That's more like it.. now, where did DsD say you hide the malt?

Bugger.. it's all gone...

I'm off to bed, then..

Excellent. Thanks Nilpferd.

It's koved.

Whilst all this was going on I just watched Rudo Y Cursi, the best film (not) about football I've ever seen,

The subtitles I downloaded left a bit to be desired, but it got the general idea across.

am sorry but can't just shove (or kove) these up willy nilly..

(whoops could attract wrong uns again)

got side tracked by Konono Nº1 - electrified thumb piano solos gotta be worth a listen.

Björk album Medúlla had some great beatboxing and throat singing(!) solos - so been lost in that too.

rare Tommy boy 12" (calm down lasses) needed a spin.

loads of Tony Allen and yo la tengo tracks mostly racking up over 10 minutes each...

Four tet nocking out 23 minute versions of things.. isn't speeding up the process...

planet Ninja keeps tempting me with tracks - then I loose the solo definition - because, I'm a gut feeling kind of listener.. never analyze it that much.

(and Ruth ask me to put one of your cds on because I explained how much I'd enjoyed them while driving about last week... so basically it's your fault!!!)

night all..

where is the Leeds live link up.

sourpus said...

I rather like both Schiele and Klimt actually - Schiele did virtually bugger all to be ashamed of. More power to him I say.

What's going on here? And why does Blimpy keep teasing with these big pictures?
I'm ok by the way, just exhausted.

steenbeck said...

golly nilpferd, you know I was talking about MY comment, right?

Y'Know, if I'd known that you would all be missing us so much and that all the best RR conversation was at the RR Social(North) in Leeds, I would have paid something for you all to have been there. It's almost sad seeing you all make up any excuse to keep chattering when you knew that the real action was going on in Leeds.

And believe me we had some great conversation. We've managed to sew up a rebranding of the blog , the spill and we're going to take over the A-List and....and....er....
Oh bugger, I wasn't supposed to say anything about that.

Erm

Photos later........

I hope...

If somebody else remembers to download them from the camera before wiping them.

AliMunday said...

Hello everyone (brushes tumbleweed from the corners) - well, 11 of us made it to the social, Gordonimmel, me, Darcey's Dad, Mnemonic, Tarxien, Webcore, Tincanman, Exodus, TracyK, Daddypig and Gremlin, so that's where we've been. And a jolly nice group of people too, if I may say so. We weren't joined by any scantily clad ladies, although Tracy K was wearing some very fetching hosiery - and if Tinny gets it together you may be treated to a shot of DsD's hindquarters, at some point. But we would not have been there had it not been for Blimpy and the marvellous blog.

Exodus said...

Hi all - good to see you've been keeping yourselves busy. Had a great night tonight & lovely to meet & put faces to the names. Tin has all the evidence!

12 (or more!) hour workdays and no days off is my poor excuse...I have been reading everything, but been too tired to compose a response or a witty aside, or more usually, I have time to read but then have to dash off somewhere. this week looks a little less hectic though, so will try to do better!

looking forward to the photos!

Luke-sensei said...

oh..and Shane/Nilpferd - your constant natterings about Ninja Tunes prompted me to pick up what looks like an early compilation 2xLP from them (it's called "Ninja Cuts:Funkjazztical Tricknology") today. It's spinning now,so i'll be back with a verdict later....

Luke-sensei said...

@Shoey

Nice tunes - i hadn't heard that much of Fever Ray before, they reminded me quite a lot of Mum & Dad. (the Twisted Nerve band that is, rather than my parents). have they split up then?

Abahachi said...

Re Fever Ray: there's only one of them - Karin Dreijer Andersson from the Knife - and she announced in an interview in Friday's Grauniad that there weren't going to be any more albums. Waaahhh!

Luke-sensei said...

..I suppose it would be difficult to split up with yourself....

did she do more than one album? If so, which is the best one to get? I liked what I heard there a lot..

ToffeeBoy said...

Morning all - arrived safely in Edinburgh just after midnight. Planning on spending a VERY lazy day - although I do have a 1,000 word article to complete.

Like Abahachi and Japanther, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find enough time to post and comment on the 'Spill. I suspect this is partly to do with the huge numbers of posts that appear these days (which is by no means a bad thing and not a moan of any sort!) but also because of my work situation. I think I failed to read the small print somewhere - I'm sure this isn't what life is meant to be ...

I am still 100% in love with the 'Spill [Yuk - and we thought Schiele was the perv! Ed.] and I check in every day whether I have time to read/comment/post or not. Can't say the same for the mothership though ...

tincanman said...

sorry m8, justbeen busy with kids and start of an RR week and social.

TracyK said...

Just got back from Leeds, what a lovely evening! Thanks again to Ali for putting it together, great choice of venue, good music, wonderful company and Rich's RRs...

Prague: there's a nice little gallery upstairs on the corner of the Old Square, same side as Our Lady Of Tyn: they had a very interesting Dali watercolours and drawings exhibition last time we were there, as well as the obligatory Muchas. I'll dond the Pergammon Museum in Berlin, for the Ishtar gate and the Pergamon altar, plus there's a wonderful merchant's house and a couple of rooms of Greek/Roman statuary. The Gemaldergalerie is very good and not too busy, nice restaurant too. Very lovely Botticellis and, I think a Raphael tondo.

nilpferd said...

cheers shane- but sounds like a limp excuse to me... ;-)
Japanther- hope you enjoy- that's a comp I don't have.. My first Ninja Tunes mix was Coldkrushcuts, still love it. Xen Cuts is essential too.
Steen- it was more the joke that my comment was the undesirable traffic attracted by your comment, and...um.. well, it seemed amusing at the time.. I was just pissed off that Blimpy's whisky was all gone, really..

nilpferd said...

Sharivari, further to my Prague suggestions, I see there's a big Josef Capek retrospective at Prague Castle, well worth a look..

We also went to a fine exhibition of eastern european reactions to the fall of the Iron Curtain at the municipal library, 2nd Floor- the gallery is running a similar exhibition now-
